How long do you want to ignore this user?
I've been taking photos on it all day after I formatted it in the camera. I'd like to recover those photos if possible. I put the card in my pc to view them and they disappeared as I was viewing them. I had a message pop and say the files are corrupted and I need to format the card. Is there anyway to recover these files before re-formatting?

thanks!

Can the camera view them still? If so, put card back in and then plug camera in to pc and transfer.

Second, are you on a mac or windows? Check the cards format to make sure its in one your os can read.

The camera could see the photos just fine until I got home and installed the card in my Windows type pc. I was viewing the photos and watched them fail and get reported as corrupted and in need of formatting as I scrolled through pics.

After that, I put the card back in the camera and it says the card is corrupted and needs to be formatted. Brand new card with about 30 pics on it.

Try Disk Drill and Stellar. Both have free versions. I think they limit by size but you'll be able to see if either work on some files and then you can buy the software if one or the other does work.

Incidentally, what SD card is it and what exactly where you doing? What was your process for uploading files to your computer?

It's a SanDisk 128gb card. I bought it this morning and installed it in a new (to me) camera. I went through the process the camera required to format the card and it said I was good to go. Throughout the day I took some photos around the house trying out the new camera. I transferred that card several times to my pc and it worked just fine. I returned from my last shooting trip where I took some great shots of my daughter posing for soccer photos. I put the card into the pc and was viewing the photos and as I reached the last few shots, a notification popped up saying the card was corrupted and needed to be formatted. I could read the file number for each pic, but when I clicked on one to open in, I got the same corrupt/re-format prompt.

When I put the card back into the camera it said there was a card error that required re-formatting. I tried installing the Stellar version, but didn't know if it was for real or not. I got through downloading it and it wanted me to make a purchase. I was in the middle of cooking supper and getting kids settled for the night and haven't messed with it. There's only a half dozen pics I'd like back, but I can re-create them later if need be. They were good ones, though.

I do appreciate your wise councel!

Card from a store or from Amazon? Lots of fake cards on Amazon nowadays, even with branded cards like SanDisk. Makes it look like its saving pictures but its just overwriting its memory constantly. The icon data is small and may by why they showed until it was inserted and then it went to crap.

I bought it at the local hardware store, similar to Tractor Supply Co. They have a little Radio Shack store in the back w/ basic tech stuff in it. This is turning in to a lot of work to try and recover a half dozen photos. I guess I need to learn to do this now rather than later.

If you cant recover anything, first step would be to exchange it imo if you can. No point in risking this again if the card is faulty.

If I can't recover anything (I'm currently scanning w/ Stellar) I'll re-format it and make for sample photos and see if I have anymore trouble. I put an older disk in the camera and the camera read "card error" also and I had to format that card as well. I'll use that one today get shots around the yard and see if there is another problem.

thanks for the help!

I used the Stellar version and it was able to find about eight of the thirty or photos on the card. The ones I wanted to save weren't among the saved one. They want $50 to recover them. That's be fine if I had a card full of important pics. Pictures of obese bunny rabbits hopping around the yard aren't worth that! I can re-create the lost pics.

thanks again!

I mean there are probably less than legal means to get that software for a single use

Just make sure if you're buying a card on Amazon the seller is Amazon, not some third party. For SD cards and many other tech items.

Were you lucky to recover your data? It seems I have the same issue.

Try Recuva. It's free I believe.

I was never able to recover the photos. I re-formatted the sd card and kept using it. It did the same thing again where I lost the photos that were on the card. I'm using a card reader that plugs in to my laptop. It was when I was viewing photos via the card reader plugged in to my laptop that the problem occurred. I've started immediately copying the photos to my laptop and external before viewing the photos and haven't had any problems yet.

I should probably replace that card soon rather that risk having it quit on me.

Troubleshooting 101: get another card and test. You should rule out the camera and the card reader too. Theoretically either could be corrupting the card. But it's most likely a bad card. I'd pitch it to be safe. I have a one and done rule with any media - one glitch and it goes in the trash.

Anyone else find the poster who linked to macgasm.net a little sus? All of their posts read a little off like a chat bot's would. Like this one

It's a thread about blood pressure with wordy bot stuff, and then a random link about hearing aids that's completely out of place. Most of their posts are this same sort of format.

There are lots of spam messages that get posted and usually quickly deleted. Just flag them so the mods can take care of it.

I started a thread on the tech support forum pointing these out. Staff was pretty good about nuking the first few but it appears they've lost interest.

When you are buying a card for photography buy directly from the maker to avoid counterfeit cards.

Then test them like you did this one. After that you should be good to load it up.
