Game of the Year. I can't even describe how good Starfield would have to be to dethrone this game. Yeah yeah Zelda but I've never cared about Zelda.

Playing a Drow warlock here

Hope people keep up with the reviews after a few days and weeks.

Still on the fence about getting this. Still can't get over it being non-real time.

How is the progression in this game? Isn't there something like only 12 levels? How does that work?

It's only 12 levels since it's a Dungeons and Dragons game and that's how that works for their rule set.

It has been a lot about loot I have noticed, too. Lots of items that can work together (I've found a lot of stuff that augments lighting attacks), so you can basically make builds/sets out of stuff you find.

There's also a secondary power system unlocked due to your "affliction."

Have you played DnD before? If not, maybe see if you like a few hours of gameplay from a streamer. But if you have played DnD, go and pull the trigger on this one yesterday. You'll love it.

Loved BG1&2 growing up. (As well as icewindale)

More concerned about not having as much time to play it now as when I was a kid. And the lack of real time combat. That bothered me a lot when I found out BG3 was being made.

It definitely is a time sink. Wife went to visit her parents last weekend so I was able to dump a whole Sunday into it, but progress has been glacial otherwise.

However, it's not stuffed in the way that Assassin's Creed games might be (world too big, repetitive fetch quests, etc) - lots of variety and well thought out side quests.

I'm blanking...wasn't BG1 and 2 turn based combat or at least hit the pause button while you plan your next move(s) during battle?

Are you looking for a full blown real-time combat system with no ability to pause action?

I think BG1 and 2 were both turn based.

If it makes you feel any better, only the combat is turn based. The rest of the non-combat is live (with a turn based as an option if it benefits the situation).

BG1 and BG2 were "turn-based" as in they incorporated the rule set from DnD but you didn't have to pause at all if you didn't want to.

Yes, this is what I recall. I would hit pause button to get my **** together in heat of battle.

So is this one like that or is it hexagonal turn based by default?

Completely turn-based, but no discrete hexes. Combat is also very much three dimensional, with a lot of verticality in a lot of fights. I've won fights by shoving a boss into a bottomless chasm.

Serious question: Do you lose out on loot by doing that? Do you loot dead bodies in this game?

And is any loot randomized or is it all fixed similar to the first two games?

It feels like almost everything is lootable in this game... a lot of stuff that you wouldn't expect could have some pretty good loot in it.

That said, if you decide to shove a boss off a cliff that loot that they had goes with them. If it's off a cliff/ledge that you can get down to you can loot it. An endless chasm? Nope, that's gone.

Yep. I could've positioned the boss differently and shoved him off a chasm with a bottom, but wasn't thinking about it at the time.

I did it myself earlier with the Warlock Eldritch Blast spell that knocks back enemies... I looked up the boss and realized I thankfully didn't lose any loot that really mattered for my characters. But, there are a few I've looted in Act 1 that would have made a huge difference to my power level if I had lost it.

Enjoying it so far. I think I should have chosen the easy mode first, rather than balanced. I've never played DnD before, so thinking of creative solutions to problems hasn't quite entered into my strategy.

Spent an hour taking on a group of looters in a crypt. Finally beat them, only to realize there was a giant exploding barrel that had been sitting in the middle of them that I didn't notice.

Eldritch blast is busted. Absolutely OP spell with the right upgrades. If you're playing a warlock you can use it to get you and your allies out of tight situations. Pair it with Hex to melt enemies.

Interested to see everyone's party configs.

I'm running Karlach as my tank. Then a triple spell caster backcourt. I'm a melee warlock PC, Shadowheart (respecced into a Tempest Cleric instead of a Trickery cleric) and Gale. Shadowheart and I can take a bit of a beating to protect Gale.

I've got my paladin and Karlach as the front line with a back court of Shadowheart and Gale. Considering swapping out Shadowheart for Wyll.

I started a third play through running this same party. Except my Paladin is a custom Dark Urge vengeance paladin trying to do the right thing while butchering those who mostly deserve it. His name? Dexter

So should I not have killed Astarion? I wake up to a vampire near my neck, I tend to put a stake through them.

Bought this over the weekend…thoughts and prayers to my sleep. I'll start playing around 8pm thinking "I'll play for an hour or two before bed." Next thing I know, I look up and it's almost midnight lol.

Great game. Really draws you in. I've always been a fan of CRPGs and this may be my new favorite.
