Finishing the basement and looking for a fairly decent TV to hang on the wall. It's been years since I shopped for a TV as my main TV I bought ~15 years ago still works perfectly fine.
My questions are
Is there a significant difference in a 400-500 Costco Samsung/LG tv vs the 1000+ Sonys and other TVs?
I'm looking primarily at the aforementioned Costco Samsung and LG options in the 65" range. Is one brand better than another?

Will this be a primary entertainment tv? If so, go for OLED or QD-OLED. Best picture quality, especially for what i assume is a room that can get quite dark. If this is just a use it every so often while drinking a beer tv, a nice micro-LED tv would suffice and those are a bit cheaper than the OLED. I have had both an LG OLED and currently main a Samsung S95B QD-OLED. Both are fantastic panels. Sony A95K is also nice from what i hear but its more expensive due to it being a Sony.

Dont fall for "Q"LED, those are just gimicky LED panels they slap an extra letter on the front of to charge you more.

Let us know your budget and use case. Shouldn't be hard to find a good unit for you.

how big? go with the 77" OLED or 65" OLED from LG. 65" B series LG OLED can be had for ~$1k.

If you just want something that's "good, not great" - buy whatever LG or Samsung you can afford at the biggest size.

I've got a 75" TCL (junk brand) on my patio that was about $600. OLEDs in the living and media room.

Thanks for the insight, for someone who doesn't really watch a bunch of movies is the extra $$$s for OLED worth it? Seems like, for a 65" it's either in the 4-500 ranger or the 1200-1700 range for OLED, unless I'm missing something?

You aren't getting an OLED for $500. Probably reading it wrong or seeing "QLED"

It isn't just for movies, I love the OLED for sports and video games as well.

Up to you. I think the picture quality is much better.

Do this, go to a bestbuy and look at the OLEDs vs a normal tv and make the decision for yourself.

In general, I take these threads with a grain of salt. I'm like you, we've had our current TV for 12+ years. I do appreciate the feedback from those more knowledgeable than me.

But at the end of the day the TV I'm used to, and really fine with, is over 10 years old, not even 4k capable, etc. I'd assume even those in the lower price ranges are going to be significantly better than it....

If you have a 15yo TV, then you are fine with a new $400-500 tv.

In the past year, we bought a 55" fire TV for $300 and it is just fine for our sparse viewing pleasure.

You'll be fine with a 4K QLED, just get one from a decent brand and you'll be good to go. I put a 65" TCL QLED out on my patio and it's great, you can get their top of the line model for like 650 on Amazon.

I'm shopping as well but have read about Oled burn in...anyone with real world experience with oled? Watching tons of espn and similar sports channels with the static graphics have me second guessing an oled.

Not really an issue with pixel shift and refresh technology that the panels have now. Unless you are like an airport or and office space where you do not turn the tv off or change the channel at all, it shouldn't be a factor.

That's not always helpful. I've seen demo oled lgs on the floor that looks grainy and like absolute garbage. Same with Costco. It's incredible that they'd have a high end tv with what looks like an SD signal.

What about a large Roku brand tv? They're now making their own brand, sold through Best Buy. I have a couple and I love them, at least bang for buck.

Nope. Had a 65 inch lg c1 oled that I absolutely loved before that room was destroyed by water damage. Once my house is rebuilt I intend to get a new 77 inch c3. Loved that thing…

Never had a problem with burn in, or any other complaint or issue. Watch a ton of sports, as well as channels that have their stupid logo in the corner, with no burn in. I'd imagine that quality of oled (meaning good brand) makes a difference there.

Magnolia and a good Best Buy will have the right demo feeds on OLEDs. I'd say they usually look better in stores than in reality, unfortunately.

As someone with both (TCL QLED and Vizio OLED) I'd say the difference in pretty minimal. The OLED is awesome for movies when I've got the lights down and it does look amazing, but in every day use they're pretty comparable.

TVs have come so far in the last 10-15 years that we're getting really nitpicky, once you're at the 4K QLED level everything there and up looks pretty awesome.

This right here is why I'm not planning on spending the extra $$ for the OLEDs.

Have had an OLED for about 5 years, and it's been great. When running even decent content through it, it looks amazing. When running true 4k content, it's simply stunning.

Not sure what point this makes? **** signal will look bad on both tvs. Good signal will look good on both but better on OLED.

This.

Regular streaming of tv and sports looks good, but it's hard to say if it's much better than a cheaper tv. Popping the Maverick 4k disc (as an example) into the 4k player and it's jaw dropping. Especially with a good sound system. If you will never use it with true 4k content, then you'll never know, or appreciate, what that extra money bought you. In which case, it's not worth it. But once you see what it can do, you'll understand the difference between quality levels of these TVs.
