Howdy, Yes I am an old, not totally computer illiterate but the Streaming Thing has me confused, have Roku and stream ESPN for Aggie Sports but that is about it. Currently a DISH subscriber, only because that had the SEC Channel in my area long time ago. Cost is now outrageous, $150 per month and we watch Fox News, TMC, my wife watches the Hallmark Channel and EWTN. I record Bearing Sea Gold every Friday it is on..

My questions:
1. Can you record off of YouTube TV to the cloud (see not totally dumb)?
2. Does it have a selection screen of what is on at what times for the various channels?
3. Please tell me the pros and cons of YouTube TV.

Thanks

Its been a long time since I had Sat, and I had DirectTV then, but I'm pretty sure it works similar to Dish, cable, etc. In that regard, the biggest con to YTTv that I've found is the inability to quickly go back and forth between channels. If, for example, you're watching the A&M game and it goes to commercial and you want to check out another game, you pull up that channel on most systems, go to it, and then hit one button to return to the Aggie game -- and so forth. You can't do that on YTTv. So if you're a channel surfer like I've been my entire adult life, YTTv (and streaming in general) is a huge adjustment.

Streaming TV is no brainer if the technology in your house is somewhat up to date. You just need to keep in mind that you'll need decently fast internet in your house and you'll need to make sure you aren't on an old plan that limits how much data you can use.

You are also going to need good wi-fi or a mesh network in the house, depending on how many TVs you have and where they are located. But the great thing about YouTube TV is any Smart TV, phone, tablet, etc. is ready to watch live TV, you just need to have an internet/wireless network connection.

But as it was said above, do the free trial and you will answer a lot of your own questions. I've been using YouTube TV for around 3 years now and it's awesome and, more importantly, includese all of the ESPN/SEC Network stuff for Aggie Football!

My questions:
1. Can you record off of YouTube TV to the cloud (see not totally dumb)? Yes. You just click the "+" to add to your library. and when you want to watch something, go to "Library" at the top and you can go find your show. The thing I like about this vs. when we had DTV is it will record that show on any channel it plays on, not just the channel you ask it to record.
2. Does it have a selection screen of what is on at what times for the various channels? Yes, there is a guide and you can set up the guide to show the channels in any order you want and even remove channels you will never watch. To do that, you have to log into YouTubeTV on your computer (not a phone/tablet) and you can customize your guide from there. You can do this for each profile, so if your wife wants her own profile, she can put her channels at the top instead of asking you where they are and you playing dumb because you hid the Hallmark channel to avoid non-stop Christmas movies.
3. Please tell me the pros and cons of YouTube TV. The only con I have is it doesn't have the channel the Astros play on, and if you're a Rangers fan, it doesn't have theirs as well. Other than that, no cons. Pros are it is much cheaper than satellite. You don't have to rent or buy a receiver to watch on another TV. You can download the YTTV app to your smart TV or buy a streaming device like Fire Stick, Apple TV, Roku, etc. If you travel somewhere, you can log into your account and watch your stuff from that TV. Also, when you record Aggie football games, it doesn't stop at the assigned time. Google used logic and it records the game until it's over. And you can just set Aggie Football as a favorite team and it will automatically record the game if it's on CBS/ABC/SECN/one of the ESPNs. Also, SECN+ is included. You just need to log into the ESPN app by using your YTTV credentials. NO EXTRA SUBSCRIPTION IS REQUIRED FOR SECN+. 10 years in and some are still confused by that, so they complain here rather than go make sure they're not yelling at clouds. SECN+ is where most Aggie Baseball games are as well.

Thanks

1. The concept of recording is very outdated. YTV stores all of its content. By adding a show/game to your library it is really just adding it to your profile so it's easy to keep track off. Without adding a game to your library you can still search for it and watch the entire game after the fact. Also, YTV has a feature for sports where instead of watching the entire game, you can choose just to watch the most meaningful plays (in order with everything else cut out).

And you can have up to 4 different users on your plan. So you yourself and 3 other family or friends.

Yes you can. Just press the down button (at least on Roku and Google TV platforms) and it brings up your most recently viewed channels.

Same on Apple TV and Fire Stick. And it's actually better because it will show the last 4 and you can see a preview to ensure you're not going to another game in a commercial.

If you can navigate a Roku or any other streaming device/menu then there are zero cons to YouTube tv.

One of the features I like is that you can have it add whole genres of content to your library automatically. I add NCAA FBS Football to my interests, and I can go back after the fact and watch any of the games that came on. If I'm bored, or a game interests me after the fact, I don't have to worry about being able to find it.

The downside for me is that Youtube TV isn't as cheap as it used to be. The bonus is that pretty much everyone is paying exactly the same price (I hate having to call and haggle) and I can pause my subscription or cancel at any time without having to talk to a human being.

Big fan of YTTV. It's incredibly easy to use and available anywhere you get WiFi or mobile service on your phone. Downsides: lacks certain networks, mainly MLB network and RSNs like Ballys and such, which are probably going away anyways. Overall highly recommend.

Echoing the same as above, I have been very pleased with it, AND it's easy to pause for 6 months at a time. I only use Youtube TV during the fall for tailgates and football. At the end of the season, I pause it so It does not bill for 6 months. Well worth it compared to Dish.

I probably need to think about doing this. Right now I keep the subscription active year round, but it rarely gets watched once football season is over.

Cons of YouTube tv:

1. You can't just enter a channel number. Doesn't both me but that was a change for my parents.

2. The sports multiview needs to let you pick the 4 games or at least have one that is the four most watched games at the moment. You get some terrible combos. It must have something to do with sister companies like fox doesn't want to be with ESPN in their group of 4.

YouTube TV doesn't have the regional sports networks. When I lived in Dallas, I couldn't watch the Mavs. I moved to Houston and I can't watch the Astros or Rockets.

Even if it's a nationally televised game on MLB Network or NBA Network, because it's also on the local regional sports network, MLB Network or NBA Network will black it out.

Bring up the guide and select the channel. If you go to their website, you should be able to put in your zip code and see all the locals for your area, which should be all.

Agreed on multiview. I finally found that if you start viewing your main game and hit the down button, there is sometimes a multiview menu that appears and will offer you all the multiview options that contain your main game.

I'm hoping that they'll add that in the future. The multiview feature was a nice addition this season even though you couldn't choose the games yourself.

That's my only complaint, although it was on point Saturday night…but the limited games may have been the reason.

Disagree.....

The price increases of streaming services really don't make it a no brainer anymore. Also, it depends on what channels you need, YouTube TV doesn't have AT&T Sportsnet which is the majority of what we watch. Even with that aside, they couldn't compete with my cable/internet price through Xfinity ($110/month w/ 1,000 mbps internet vs. around $160 if doing internet by itself plus YouTube TV or Fubo).

What happens to that price if you don't call them and threaten to leave every 9-12 months?

How many people do you have to talk to if you want to cancel and go with another provider?

I absolutely hate the haggling that you have to do in order to get a consistently good price with normal television providers. I hated my bill creeping up and up with no notification and I hated having to get on the phone with multiple people to cancel so that I could chase a deal with a different provider.

My internet bill has been exactly the same for 4+ years at this point and I pay for YoutubeTV during football season. I can understand local sports being a dealbreaker for you (team ownership should have done a better job picking a broadcast partner), but the BS that it takes to keep a cable bill under control is not worth the trouble for me...

Have had xfinity for about 15 months now and haven't called once.

I agree with all your points. Especially if you're someone who cancels outside of football season or something similar. Not at all saying streaming doesn't make sense for anyone. Just specifically responding to the comment that it's a "no brainer"

Can you stream that on your iPad, phone, firestick, etc, as you do with all the streaming services?
I love taking my tv service with me my multi month extended road-trips. And with my vpn I can watch the local sports with directv stream. With the price skyrocketing, I'm considering switching to YouTube tv now though. Does vpn work with YouTube tv on the firestick?

Yes and no.

Xfinity has a streaming app. When you're home you get every channel, recording, etc. This is nice because you no longer have to pay for a box for every TV, just use a smart TV or streaming device.

When you're not home it's limited by your location. But pretty much anything I stream is available through secondary apps anyway (ESPN, AT&T Sportnet, etc.) so I rarely use the Xfinity app.

Again, not saying cable is always and entirely better than streaming. Streaming has clear advantages, portability is one, but not as great as maybe it once was.
