I haven't even started and I probably have over 250 accounts to update.

Start early. It took some of my accounts a few days to update. I also needed access to both accounts at times for verification.

What a cluster.

Doing the same thing. A few accounts a day.

Brilliant GAP76!

I didn't see that option before.

I couldn't get a gmail name that i liked, so I'm bought my own domain name and created a website so i can have an email address that I like.

I've moved a couple dozen accounts so far, still dozens yet to move.

To pour salt on the wound, I deleted my old gmail account when I moved to AggieNetwork and there is no way to recover it. Ugh, this is the most upset I've ever been towards an A&M affiliated organization. This transition is going to be brutal.

Yep, it's painful. I've started the process of updating accounts and changing contact info. I've already got a separate list of accounts that won't let me change the email address or require a call to customer support to update the info.

Then we get to work through this again for my wife's accounts.

And whoops...I just let my Century Club membership lapse.

Maybe don't update the Century Club email address.

I picked today as the day to start migrating. Starting with the important accounts first and working my way down the list.

Stupid question, but I have my aggienetwork.com email through my gmail account through however the Association told me to do it years ago; will I lose these in my gmail once this becomes inactive or just no more getting new emails?

I have been searching my gmail to see what accounts are still using aggienetwork.com and have been updating everything, but I am sure some old account I need to log into will send a password reset to aggienetwork.com email in a year! I wish they would keep this option for active/paying century club members.

My understanding is your email address is no longer valid and essentially deleted/disabled.

Start the migration soon!

A&M: To payout Jimbo the $77mil it cost to fire him, let's sunset the association of former students email program to cut costs.
GUY: Okay but we promised them lifetime access to that email account.
A&M: Zero F**** Given, Axe it. Tell them it was a "tough decision".

I've spent several hours updating accounts, and I am only about 25% through the list of accounts I have identified. I'm sure there are many other accounts that I will completely forget about until I realize I need them after the March sunset deadline. Should have at least been a year so we could catch anything that happens over the course of a year.

I really wish they never said "For Life" because I never would have signed up. Granted Google could go out of business, and we would lose gmail accounts, but I'll take my chances. The association really screwed us over, and I won't forget it.

It is a painful, tedious process… recommend going in reverse alphabetical order to change accounts. If you run out of time, "Association" account may not get updated!

One thing I'd recommend is people keep a list of accounts they may need to update in the future too. I keep a list in case I need to update based on having a new physical address, phone number, email, or credit card number.

Granted, I don't keep a list of every damn thing that requires an email login, but it at least includes the important ones.

In 2022, a secure e-mail service called ctemplar.com shut down with only a month or so warning.

Ctemplar's goal was to never divulge their customer information to the government. There is some thought that the reason they shut down was to avoid being put in a position where they would have to provide that information.

Knocked out about 100 accounts so far as getting email updated. Only ~150 to go. The worst to deal with so far is all my accounts linked to home automation stuff. My goodness it can be a PIA to get everything working right when you do something as simple as change email on your account. Some stuff essentially requires a complete reset.

Association sent out a reminder email today. Expanded more on the issue but nothing substantive.

I still don't understand why they couldn't have just implemented an email forwarding service and not host the accounts.

It's been a while since I've read the FAQ but it's been updated since I read it last:

https://www.aggienetwork.com/news/160253/security-changes-coming-to-aggienetworkcom-email/#sunsetfaq

Quote:

Why can't you just allow the addresses to be forwarding addresses?
We did look into continuing to offer email forwarding, however doing so with @AggieNetwork.com addresses would not have resolved the ongoing security threats that this program poses.

If we were able to continue to offer email forwarding, it would have to be on another domain. Existing @AggieNetwork.com addresses would still have to be decommissioned and would not be allowed to forward to the new domain.

This means that users would still be in the exact same position they are today, having to move everything over to a new, non-@AggieNetwork.com address.

What are the specific security threats?
Online security best practices prevent organizations from publicly sharing security threats, and so we won't.

However, as mentioned in the announcement email, in our examination of this program we engaged with security professionals in our building, and within and outside of the Aggie Network. We were told by all that the existence of this program is a continued threat to The Association of Former Students and all who engage with us.

These threats are tangible and not just to reputation or liability.

Security incidents with this program have increased in frequency year over year. Today's cybersecurity landscape is much different than it was when this program started more than 20 years ago.

And any time and resources that we allocate to addressing incidents prevent time and resources from being focused on our core mission of helping Texas A&M and Texas Aggies.

Don't the students use the same platform? I wonder why only the alumni are affected by this "security issue."

Maybe someone here has the answer, but when this all went down, I downloaded all my photos from google, created a new account, but shared the old association google account with my new one. So when I looks at those old photos, they're not counted towards my current drive space, curious when those will finally get deleted and I'll have to actually upload the saved one. Anyone know why the photos are still technically hosted on the association account?

But this thread is a good example of why you should never give people something for free....

No, the money I paid for my degree was for my degree. Not to have an email address after graduation.

Also what security issue would this have that GMail doesn't?

Howdy,

There are shared security issues, for sure. Google deals with all kinds on their end. However, when the originating address of the issue is from, say, an @AggieNetwork.com address, we are contacted first or are punted to by Google to deal with relevant parties/authorities.

There are additional risks and concerns that are unique to us as an organization. Some of these stem from the way the email program was set up so many years ago, some are due to the way cybersecurity and threats have evolved since this program was established.

Although we cannot discuss specific threats as mentioned in our FAQ (https://tx.ag/emailsunsetfaq), we can say that there have been some incidents in which law enforcement has been involved. And the overall number of incidents is increasing year over year, and the types of incidents are evolving year over year.

Again, as a nonprofit, any time and resources we have to reallocate to deal with increasing incidents related to this program is time and resources taken away from fulfilling our core mission of helping Texas A&M and Texas Aggies.

We know this sucks. It really, really sucks. And we hate the fact that we've found ourselves in this position and have had to put our users in this position. We wish it wasn't so.

There have been other recent questions on this thread that are addressed in the FAQ. I would encourage y'all to read through it.

I'll be checking this thread periodically and responding as I can and as needed.

Thanks for the further explanation and update. I understand the predicament the Association is in with the gmail issue and the @aggienetwork email for former students. As a former student, I will just be glad when I complete updating my new email address with all of my accounts so I am done with the @aggienetwork email. Time to put @aggienetwork in the rear view mirror.

Are the email addresses used for the local A&M clubs considered to be part of the Association organization and will be kept, or are they considered personal and everything with them will be lost?
