Crud, I missed where anything other than it going down in capacity was supposed to happen. I used it as a backup of personal files here at home... that are no longer backed up any more. Any recommendations on a good hard drive 4-6TB in size to pick up?

You might want to get some solid state usb drives of maybe 1 or 2 TB each. Backup the files to them, unmount them and unplug them, and then get a safety deposit box and store them in there.

The idea is that if there are any of a number of problems that would cause the destruction or loss of your computer, then having copies wouldn't help if they were also destroyed. This would include things like fire, theft, flood, ... .

My suggestion for a safety deposit box is one five miles or more from your home. The idea is that the closer the storage area, the more likely that one catastrophe such as a flood could potentially destroy them both.

I'll do you one better, I'm giving a backup to my parents. They're 5 states away so if something bad enough comes along to take out both it'll be the least of my concerns.

So I'm very nervous about it going down tonight. Someone convince me I did the right thing.

For years I used my @aggienetwork email to store my google photos. I have thousands on that account, particularly of my kids' first days, etc.

I set up partner sharing with my personal Gmail. I shared all content. I then saved them to my gmail account. Then disabled sharing. I see them al in my Gmail account and my current Photos storage says 75GB.

What concerns me is these photos still say "Shared by a Google user. Saved to your photos." and "This item doesn't take up space in your account storage. Learn more".

I also used the takeout service and downloaded all 300GB of my Drive and Photos content to an external drive.

I've disconnected from sharing that account for months and see all of them. I'm basing my assumption of this

https://support.google.com/photos/thread/253226884?hl=en&msgid=253274614

Quote:

Once you have saved the photos and confirmed you can see them in the library of the new account at https://photos.google.com/ and have disconnected the Partner sharing to confirm they are not deleted the photos now belong to the new account and will not be affected by any other activity.

Am I good? Overthinking this?

Well, yeah, that post was from yesterday

Everything seems to be there!

Only thing I wish I did was copy the shared album I had created from the Aggie network account. Had a bunch stuff I'd been adding which was synced to my Dad's photo frame.

The one thing I forgot about was contacts. I figured this day was coming when they took away the unlimited storage so I moved everything over starting in 2022. But I completely forgot about my contacts. Hopefully I didn't miss anyone.

anyone have any idea what the "security concerns" that they mention as a reason for discontinuing this service could be? the only answer I saw on the webpage about it basically amounted to "there are security issues and we can't tell you about them".

A few folks have asked that question. That seems to be the only response. I don't buy it. what security risk would they have that wouldn't be present in every other gmail account? Now that the accounts are terminated it seems like they could share since the risk is no longer present.

If they were to say it was a reputational risk, I would understand it as no telling what people were storing on their accounts. Just given the number of people im sure they dealt with law enforcement a few times.

I won't be forgiving them for this but they won't care.

Won't be donating anything but they've made their bed. Hope it's comfy because there's lots of Ags not happy about this whole **** up

Forgiving the association?

The more likely scenario was that google came back to them and said, "hey you know alll that crap you got for free? Yeah not anymore."

We posted this back on page 5 of this thread. It's as specific as we will get about the security issues.

Quote:

Howdy,

There are shared security issues, for sure. Google deals with all kinds on their end. However, when the originating address of the issue is from, say, an @AggieNetwork.com address, we are contacted first or are punted to by Google to deal with relevant parties/authorities.

There are additional risks and concerns that are unique to us as an organization. Some of these stem from the way the email program was set up so many years ago, some are due to the way cybersecurity and threats have evolved since this program was established.

Although we cannot discuss specific threats as mentioned in our FAQ (https://tx.ag/emailsunsetfaq), we can say that there have been some incidents in which law enforcement has been involved. And the overall number of incidents is increasing year over year, and the types of incidents are evolving year over year.

Again, as a nonprofit, any time and resources we have to reallocate to deal with increasing incidents related to this program is time and resources taken away from fulfilling our core mission of helping Texas A&M and Texas Aggies.

We know this sucks. It really, really sucks. And we hate the fact that we've found ourselves in this position and have had to put our users in this position. We wish it wasn't so.

There have been other recent questions on this thread that are addressed in the FAQ. I would encourage y'all to read through it.

I'll be checking this thread periodically and responding as I can and as needed.

Well, on 4/1 the email address was deactivated and it had my son's youtube channel attached to it. Does anyone know how I can recover it?

I bet some alum accounts were hacked and used for phishing activities. The coyness around security threats feels like bluster to cover legal responsibility resulting from fraudulent use of the service...essentially they have a duty to police their users. Somebody's account gets hacked, gets used to send phishing / hacking emails and then the whole incident blows back on Aggie Network.

My gut reaction guess.

Don't call me...

Yall ****ed yourself. If yall had hijacked accounts or Ags tied to subpoenas... your deal, not mine but you robbed us all of what you promised.

You don't give promises and take away. I don't want to berate your student caller that is collecting on your behalf for your own wants. Just stop.

Yall are worse than scammers. You don't pay and constantly hit us all up despite us not wanting any of it.

I've discovered that lots of accounts are so linked to the email if it's used as login that you have to basically just set up a new account. I have a handful right now that I hope I never have to reset the password or do anything by email, because it's locked out in that case with no options other than just starting over.

****, even the dutch bros app is locked into that email, and I can't change it. Sadly, I don't get regular reminders about the specials anymore. And I might not even realize I have a free drink for my birthday…

There are ways to reduce the chances of losing access to e-mail in the future.

The best is to get your own domain and host it at the provider of your choice. My preference for a hosting service is ProtonMail but there are other options such as (in alphabetical order) Google, Greatmail, Mailfence, and Zoho.

If one hosting service shuts down, you just move it to another hosting service or even host your own. For example, we originally handled our own e-mail for our company. We then moved it to Zoho, then to Greatmail, and now it is at ProtonMail.

Or just get an account at a service such as ProtonMail or Mailfence. There will always be the potential for them to shut down. One up and coming mail service, for example, was CTemplar out of Iceland. They were very serious about e-mail privacy before they shut down. I think that they shut down, it was because they couldn't provide the privacy that they wished. When they did shut down, they only gave about a month's notice.

For free e-mail, there is vivaldi.net. I don't know if they even have paid accounts or you can host our own domains on their service.

And postcards. I bet most people these days have never seen one, much less since one.

By the way, I was talking to a younger relative (40s) a month or two ago and was shocked to find out that he had only mailed about four letters in his life!

They made us mail a letter to ourselves in second grade or so just to see how the post office worked.
