My son is turning 17 and he's asking to have his Xbox account be independent from my Microsoft account. I know this cannot be done by just transferring it to him completely, email and everything. I'm wishing now that years ago i had just created an independent account for him, but I didn't foresee this becoming a big thing.

Has anyone else been in this situation and how have you handled the schism?

Did you set it up as a child's account under yours? I think that's the only way to split it off when he's old enough.

No. It's basically set up as my account. Didn't know we could set it up as a child account back in the day.

Xbox support is probably best for this. I would send them an email asking about splitting off an account for your kid and moving X game licenses over to the new account. That is assuming there are some games you want to keep and some he wants to get.
