Apple's new headset is being released now. I was an early adopter of the HTC Vive headset that had to be tethered to a computer with significant Kung-Fu to operate. Very cool games with the Steam platform. Shooting zombies in Arizona Sunshine was fun/terrifying, kids loved Beat Saber, 3D movies are cool, the NASA app where you can walk around Mars, etc... etc... I upgraded to their second generation headset.

They had apps for you to have a microsoft VR Desktop. Mine had you computer screen floating with outer space in the background. Cool novelty, but who they hell wants to work with a dorky device strapped to your head for hours on end to work?

The Apple Vision Pro is $3500 and even more, like $4k, when you get accessories you're going to want. The nerd/early adopter in me of course wants to try it out, but $4k? Yikes. Meta has a 3rd generation headset out for <$1k fully loaded. Vive has a portable headset for $500 and their new top end wireless is only $1,100.

I'm old enough to remember the hype with Google Glass which culminated with this dork in the shower.

I'm a big enough dork to drop $2k on this but I don't think I can part with $4k. I think the Apple headset goes the way of Google Glass.

Edit: I'm revising my post because Apple fan boys will buy it, no matter the cost.

I am in the weird space of being a harsh Apple critic.....while using some Apple products.

I am legitimately impressed with the tech of the Vision. Now, that being said, it will obviously need substantial support moving forward. Both from Apple and third party devs. It's cool, it's powerful, now it is up to devs and consumers to actually find a use for it. And I am hesitant to count Apple out of anything. I said exactly what you did when it came to smart watches. And now I have one on my wrist right now....

I see what you wrote but man, if you can't see the difference between Google Glass and this thing....And the cost is a lot, but let's be real. Cost is very subjective. Some of the people looking at this $4k is nothing. And it is absolutely not going to stay at that price for too long. Apple has already confirmed that.

My bottom line is this: It's pretty neat. Now it is up to consumer base and devs working together to make that neat actually worth it. And my knee jerk reaction right now, is that Apple will find a way. This is cutting edge technology and a first pass at it to boot. They are trying a LOT of new things with it out the gate and some will stick and some will fail. I honestly see this as a blank slate in a way. I will definitely be keeping an eye on it regardless. I don't see myself buying one at this exact moment but a Version 3 for sub $2500, with more support in hardware and software in effect? Who knows. Ultimately, it is wait and see for me right now.

A good video of using one so far.

There are at least 200,000 orders for the Vision Pro. Develop an app that gets the attention of at least 2% to 4% of those users and the headset is pretty much paid for.

Or just complain about it

So, "learn to code?" I make plenty of money to buy one. I just want to ***** about the cost and this is Texags, so....

I just fail to see how it is worth $2k MORE than a 3rd generation of other VR goggles. But... I may pick up the latest Vive Headset. "But, but, you can pinch to zoom the picture of your cat with your bare hands!!! Looking at the tech today made me want to get a new Vive.

Typical Apple. Act like they have a "new" revolutionary product that is just a more stylish version of other products. I have an iphone still because my Samsung caught on fire on my belly at the beach when I was out of the country on vacay.

Buy me one, and I'll post the exclusive Texags nerdery side by side comparison. I also looked at it today and had it in my cart to get one -- have to resist the nerd urge.

The video of people having timers over cooking pots is ridiculous. You're going to wear this in the kitchen? Responding to emails - Maybe. Why not just use your phone? I hate to facetime people now, so I can't see that either. I watched a movie on my Vive - cool but hours on your head gets tiring. They had an immersive NBA game that I checked out once. Cool, but it was a once.

The obvious tech use is gaming and other VR headsets are way ahead on that. Now if they ever get it down to the glasses Iron Man had, then ok, count me in. Maybe I could see use of the Apple headset on an airplane.

It's a beta product like most of Apple's first generation products. It's better to wait for the 2nd or 3rd generation products. The iPad 1 pretty much became a slab of aluminum after 3 years. The iPhone 3G became so accessible at $200 with contract vs $700 for the 1st gen. The Apple Watch Edition... well you get it.

If they can get more sports to be like the NBA app, could be game changer for watching sports. Though, watching alone.

There's an extensive thread about this on the Entertainment board. My general opinion is that it's a really cool piece of tech that will have the Apple polish and will eventually get to a good spot for those who want to use it. I definitely won't be an early adopter and probably won't ever buy one. I'm rarely in a spot where I can just put something on my face and tune out my family and the rest of the world. And when I do have those moments, I really don't think I'd like doing it in VR. I have tried out a few of the other VR headsets and found them to just be a novelty.

There's no way in hell this would ever replace my work place monitors. It's just not practical for anyone who works in an office that has even a bit of in-person interactions. I'd have to take this thing off constantly.

It's a $4000 dev kit for the applications to be made. Metas VR headsets are going to converge with their AI glasses and Apple is going to go down the same path. Sunglasses with shades that alternate between clear OLED and darkened dependent upon the environment/situation.

Gonna need solid state batteries in production to make it work and they're going to be phone replacements. Precursors to a 2030 product.

This.

It's not doing anything significantly more innovative than headsets that have already been on the market (from a hardware or software standpoint). The Entertainment thread is actually a window into this as functionality and apps that have existed for 4-5 years are getting "oh wow, that will be so awesome!" comments.

But it's Apple... so you get the bad -- people assuming it's tech they've ushered in when really they've just put it in pretty packaging, and the good -- the marketing, branding and development $$$ that comes with being on the Apple platform.

Might be cool for some commercial use case like physically disabled or autistic folks, but I just can't see living in a virtual world with these things on being a good idea. Or some industrial and medical applications.

Food for thought: why do I need to be immersed in a fake world doing things I can't do or having things I can't have in the real world?

Nothing beats the sensation of the combined five human senses.

I'm super interested in this thing to see how it works with spreadsheets. I'm in spreadsheet hell most days for work and if the "vision" part of this really works with multiple screens in spatial setup and I'm able to switch back and forth just using my eyes and a keyboard...this thing could be a game changer for me. Although that's a pretty expensive option instead of just clicking back and forth all day with a mouse the way I do now LOL...

man I did the demo today at the apple store....the spatial video is incredible. I will at some point get one of these just to be able to relive video of my kids, parents, grandkids, and other family. The immersiveness of the spatial video is incredible. I

FYI, Meta is adding Spatial Video support in the next update for the Quest 2 & 3. It's currently rolling out. 7 times cheaper.

I think this is simply supply/demand. And that demand is because of Apple fan boys that need the latest and greatest and the fact that it probably is the best on the market right now.

People who need it now will pay a premium. As time goes on they'll have more time in manufacturing and will be able to scale it larger, which will make it cheaper, making them more available to the masses.

Cybertruck is another perfect example of this....

I think it's simply that this is a dev kit, priced like a dev kit, but Apple realized they have enough of a fanboy crowd that they can release a dev kit and the end consumer will still buy.

I don't know iPhones have been around for 15 years and they are more expensive than ever. They'll just figure out a way to incorporate it into a payment plan like our phones plans are once it's commonplace.

Is it? Obviously they're more capable now but weren't iPhones $99, $199 at some point?

They were never that cheap. Launch price was $500 in 2007, and you can buy an iPhone SE today for $429, which is like $300 in 2007.

I feel like it's not really comparing apples to apples and it's hard to do…..things have changed a lot. If you had a service plan with any major carrier, they were $99. And I'd venture the guess the vast majority of people were buying through carriers back then, so paying the $99.
