How is Meta different from Second Life?

Isn't Second Life a place where you create an avatar to explore the world? This was done like 20 years ago before Meta right? How do they differ?

Is Second Life still a thing, even? I feel like I haven't heard about it in 15 years or so. That Office episode where Dwight signs up is probably the last reference I've seen until now.

Meta has burned far more cash than Second Life. I guess that's the main thing.

I would assume it has become far more lifelike as technology advances.

When it started, some people were going crazy about it and spent every minute on it that they could. I haven't heard anything like that in a long time, though.
