Emails to two separate accounts being marked as read on iPhone

How long do you want to ignore this user?

I added one of my kid's email addresses to my iPhone (native mail app) to be able to see certain emails for the college application process. My kid added one of my email addresses on the applications that were filled out. I just realized that when I get an email from one of the schools that is sent to both of our email addresses and read it from my account inbox, it marks it as read in my kid's account, even though it was not opened in that account. If I go to their account and manually mark it as unread, then it shows it as unread in my account again. Is there any way to fix this issue? One email is a Hotmail account and the other is a GMail account.

I briefly searched this and did not find a fix, but hoping someone here may know how to avoid this.

Depends on the email client you are using to read it. It would be in the settings under fetching mail / reading mail options if it exists. You would need to set it to not mark the emails as read on the server when reading on device. Its an IMAP setting, which i am 99% sure your set up as for reading mail.

I use the k9Mail client on android and its an option in there i know. But since this is native apple and they are trash for giving users actual control, i doubt you will find these options sadly.

Could be an issue of using the merged inbox feature -- are you using the "All Inboxes" view to open the mail or are you viewing the Inboxes separately? My guess is the former, and when you read the message it reads both since it treats same subjects are a thread. If you click the back arrow in the upper left you can back out and view the accounts individually.

Or delete the 2nd address from the native app and use the Gmail app for it. (assuming Hotmail is yours)

I was going to the specific inbox for each account, not the "All Inboxes." It's not a big deal because I won't have to worry about in a few months, but thought I would change a setting if that would work.
