Chrome Remote Desktop works with your Google account, so i can access my personal computers where i am already logged in.

For work i generally am accessing other people's computers to troubleshoot stuff. Remote PC makes that a lot easier.

I don't think Remote PC offers a free option for personal use. I'm pretty sure TeamViewer does though.

RemotePC ($30/yr for 1 PC is pretty cheap for good service.)

Connectwise ScreenConnect is awesome. For about $35/mo you can have it installed on dozens (I'm not sure the actual limit) of computers/servers and just remote in whenever you want. Of course you can set it up where the end user would have to allow it but we use it to administer client servers so we can just "drop in" whenever. You can drag and drop files, save user credentials - it's great.

They also have a "Support" option where you can set up a temporary session and have the user type in a code and download the client, then end the session when you're done.

We tried a few different things and this was by far the most cost effective and easiest. To add a new server you just generate a link and have the user run it on the machine and it pops up in my list of available endpoints to administer.

This is the best remote program, IMO. It's used heavily by those of us in IT and has a lot of security controls because of it.

The limit is how many people can access at once but it's gone up a hair in price, I think.

That said, unless it's changed in the last few months, you can get a free account that only allows you to have a few devices connected.

Are you planning on unattended remote access to login to computers personal/family?

I have used Zoho Assist Free Version but you can upgrade to paid for like $10-12 per month

No, this is a work thing. We want to be able to access a workhorse cpu at the office while in the field.

Trying to do it cheaply

I think I erred in my laptop purchase going for the smallest functional form factor for portability. For local work it's great, but remotely connecting to my desktop setup at home is routinely a cumbersome experience. Functional, but at about 50% the productivity as I'm used to.

Is the "smart move" for those who remote in simply to buy a laptop with a large screen now?

I use splashtop. I have a 100 computers on my account but I think the basic one computer plan is $5/ month.
