I don't intend to do any gaming or quantum computing, but I would like a system that runs very fast, has good reliability, blah blah blah

I was about to say its hard to beat the MacBook Air

I got a Lenovo Thinkpad Carbon X1. Very highly rated for a work laptop so I went with it.

However, I hate the f'ing keyboard because for some damn reason they put the Fn key where the Ctrl key always has been so I'm constantly having to adjust to that. It's an absolute PITA.

Ironically, it was rated highly partially because of the keyboard layout. Those people are morons for saying that and I'm a moron for not doing a deeper dive on the layout. Just not something I would have thought to look out for.

Every Lenovo laptop I've owned, I've been able to swap the fn & ctrl keys in the BIOS. Guessing you should be able to too.
