Digging around online and can't find the answer. Hoping someone here has an idea. I have 2 issues that I assume are connected....

Lenovo Yoga

Issue 1 - battery will not charge unless laptop is shutdown

Issue 2 - laptop will not power up without battery

Found lots of info online about #1. One of the many things that I tried to fix it was reloading the battery drivers which involved shutting down the laptop, disconnecting the battery and booting up using only the power cord. That's when I fund #2. Only info I can find online about #2 suggests that the power cord is bad however that same power cord is charging the battery when it is shutdown. And as I reconnected the battery with the power cord plugged in, I could immediately see the power kick in.

Not sure where to go from here. Any ideas?

My laptop will power up with only the battery and with battery + cable, but it will not power up with only cable (battery disconnected). However, the cable will charge the battery when the laptop is shutdown. It just takes longer than expected to fully charge.

It sounds like the power adapter is not putting out enough power to power the laptop. It will charge the battery but slowly so again it's not putting out as much power as it should be. I'd order a new power adapter and see if that fixes the problem.

This sounds reasonable. Not sure why I didn't think about this before. I tried to test before spending money on a new adapter. I have a Samsung laptop and my son's chromebook charger with the same USB C charging port..... Samsung charger would not charge the laptop shutdown or powered (via battery). Chromebook charge got the exact same results as the Lenovo charger.

Well, just because it uses the same type of port for charging, USB-C, doesn't mean that the power output is the same. I have multiple macbook chargers, with several different wattages.

Maybe you can order a replacement from Amazon and if it works, done. If it doesn't solve the problem, return it.

Looked at the current Lenovo & Chromebook chargers I have and they are both 45W chargers..... Would I cause issues to the laptop using a 65w?

There should be a model number on the charger you have. Type that into Amazon and you should be able to find one. IF not try eBay next.

No. Wattage on the power supply is how much it is able to supply. It still has to have something on the other end drawing that much. Use the 65w and see if it works. If it does, that means the computer is drawing more than the 45w charger can supply (which may be less than 45w if it isn't working correctly).

ETA: if you need a new charger, get one of the newer GaN versions on Amazon and make sure it is giving you at least as much as you need. Those are great for travel because they are smaller and weigh less while providing all kinds of charging options for computer and other devices.

Bought the 65w and no difference. Charges when laptop is closed and stops as soon as you open it up.

Have you checked the power settings in windows? Just to be sure it's not somehow configured to do that?

pretty sure I did with one of the other steps I tried but will look again.

Edit..... I don't see anything in the power or battery settings that would even allow you to effectively disable the power/charging port when in use.

Could the battery be defective? Slow charges when closed but not enough juice to power it on or keep in on?

It's less than a year old. Issues started with the original battery except it wouldn't charge at all. Replaced the original and the new one will atleast charge when the laptop is closed.

It could still be defective. Do you have a batteries plus? maybe buy a new one that is returnable?

Have you used the Lenovo Vantage tool to check out battery health and settings?

If it's under a year old, stop spending money on new batteries and contact Lenovo. All of that should be under warranty.

New battery is a year-ish old. Laptop is atleast 7-8.

7-8 years old? Congratulations on the upcoming purchase of your new laptop. If it's that old it is very possible the motherboard is starting to go.

You'll be amazed how much faster it will be. Windows 10 sunsets next October anyway so it's time.

Wow, I've never had a daily driver last that long. It's probably time to make the change.

you guys aren't wrong. fwiw this is my old laptop. I do have a 1-2 yr old one that I use daily. was intending this for my wife to use for volunteer (pto, cub scouts, etc....) stuff. the laptop she was previously using was almost 10yrs old and still on Windows 7. It was working great until the dogs knocked it off the table and jacked the screen. was just hoping to use the "free" option rather than ponying up for a new one.
