As the title says, I'm looking for a camcorder with a large screen. Back in the good old days, the screens were typically 3.5 to 4 inches. These days it seems they're all 2.7 to 3 inches, unless you get up into the pro broadcast cameras. And for these tired old eyes, the axtra screen size makes a difference.

My current device is a JVC Everio GZ-GX1 that has a 3.5" screen. It recently developed a problem, so I'm looking for a replacement. I've searched around for a refurbished one but have had no luck. There are no-name units out there with 4" screens but they are junk. Is there a name-brand camcorder out there that fits the bill?

Not close enough to people's personal space to be a true Asian tourist.

Off the top of my head, I cannot think of any camcorders with a large monitor. Even when you get the larger ENG camcorders like news crews use, the screen is not much bigger than what is on your JVC.

This is a tough one because I cannot even recall seeing cages for small camcorders like that. Cages make it easier to mount accessories to a phone or camera. (Example of cages: https://www.smallrig.com/list/Camera-Monitor-Cage.html )

As cameras get physically larger and higher in quality; the greater the chance that the user will be using an external monitor. For about $100 and up you can get some decent off brand 5in monitors that come with flexible camera mounting options. Most come with some additional features relating to focus and exposure so you can dial in your camera.

You will probably want at least a monopod because the camera is very small and will become awkward to handle with a monitor.

Monitors such as the Atomos Ninja and Blackmagic Video Assist can also record. They accept a 2.5in SSD and record right to the disk. Many camcorders can output higher video quality out of their HDMI port than they can record to on an SD card.

If the camera will be fixed, many larger tripods have multiple 1/4 20 mounting holes so you can attach a monitor to the tri-pod. It will look like a semi-truck hauling a Hot Wheels car but it will work.

Good luck

I've looked into the external monitors. But I'm running up and down the sidelines filming during games, so I really need to be compact and self contained. I'm also basically filming with one hand (right arm has a tremor from a stroke 4 years ago) so I can't use anything that's too heavy or bulky.

I've found a Canon unit with a larger screen but it's in the $1600 range. A little more than I want to spend at this time. Fortunately I may have found a way to Southern engineer my JVC to get by for now. I'm also scouring the interwebs for a used/refurbished JVC like mine, but no joy so far.

ETA- I've found a like new Canon XA10 for $589.00 that might work out for me.
