I keep getting these notifications that Windows 10 will no longer be supported by October of 2025.

So I assume they are forcing everyone to go to Windows 11.

I checked, and my AMD Ryzen 7 1800X Eight Core Processor 3600M doesnt meet requirements on one of my computers.

But my question is, is it necessary to go to Windows 11 if Windows 10 is no longer supported? Any direction would be appreciated.

I remember spending 6k on my last computer build with the latest of everything. Then they came out with the Intel i9 processor like two weeks after I had that computer built. Painful they make you keep spending.

I don't know if it's necessary or not. I will say that we had 4 or 5 laptops in our office that "didn't meet requirements" for Windows 11. Our IT guy found a way to install Windows 11 anyway, and we haven't had any issues with any of them. They all run much quicker since we updated. I wish I could remember what he did. I would give you a link.

That is encouraging. I haven't opened my laptops to check them yet. but that is good they were able to install Windows 11.

It might not be "necessary" in that things will keep working, but you won't get any security updates, so you will be vulnerable to certain attacks over time.

I guess that is what I was mostly worried about. I try not to search the web too much, other than Texags and a few news sites.

I suppose I will take my computer in and go ahead and bite the bullet on an upgrade. Don't understand the lure of someone out there creating computer viruses.

I had a company website up until last year but it was getting hacked so much and it cost so much to maintain from constant attacks that I finally decided to take it down.

I have a laptop in the same situation. I found some YouTube videos that show how to work around the Microsoft requirements. I haven't attempted any of these yet so cannot recommend one over another or speak to their effectiveness. They typically seem to involve editing the registry and they usually mention that it comes with some risks. Most likely if you make a typo or similar error.

You can backup the registry before making any changes and restore it if necessary. How to back up and restore the registry in Windows

It looks like there are plenty of similar videos on the subject. These are just the first few I found.

In December, Microsoft started allowing non-compliance machines to upgrade to Windows 11. There is a threat that you might not get security updates, but that seems extremely unlikely. M$ doesn't want to make the news that their flagship OS is getting viruses since they are refusing to push out updates to certain users.

Also in the same boat of having an unsupported laptop. Somehow in the long list of eligible processors, the one my PC has isnt included. Good on all other categories.

Any idea if they will eventually add eligible processors to the list?

Any idea why this specific processor would not be eligible / the W11 update would be bad?

This laptop is older, but still preforms very well for all my needs and I really do not want to buy a whole new laptop for the sake of getting the latest software updates.

Has anyone done the Windows 11 work-around and had things go sideways?

They are not going to add processors. On top of that the work arounds to install on unsupported devices are quickly going away. The tpm requirement can be dealt with externally. You can pay for a additional year of support. I personally say put linux on it and be done

Unfortunately some of the essential software i use is not linux compatible and I really don't want to move to another software platform

My laptop is over 11 years old at this point. It might actually be time to upgrade this Black Friday, even though it still runs pretty darn good for my purposes. Cost me $400 + 120 in additional RAM and a SSD upgrade over the years. Can't complain.

Or maybe time to finally build myself a flight sim gaming rig...

Yep I have a few windows only things for what I pay the microsoft tax. But those license fees are over a thousand annually so replacing the machine occasionally is not the big pain. But more and more stuff I use has linux versions or equivalent functionally in open source applications. My non win 11 supported machines are becoming replacements for things previously run on a Pi or other SBC. Old laptops with linux work fine for the coffee table web surfing and home assistant console. Old desktop run XCPng or Proxmox hypervisor to do utility things. But must people will will throw in the bin or ewaste them.

I am on Win 10 also. I don't like Win 11, I found it unstable when I installed it a year or so ago. It would crash for no reason like Windows 98 used to back in the day.

You will be fine. "No longer supported" means you can't call them for tech support. I never call anyone for tech support so I will use it for a long time. Might move to 11 at some point.

That us correct. Microsoft does not want to the bad rep from people getting hacked. OP will be fine.

PSA - If you're having a TPM issue for upgrading on a self built machine, check settings in your BIOS. It's possible you have it, but it's disabled. My build is from 2019 for reference and that fixed it for me on a gigabyte Auros pro WiFi MoBo.

My daughter's 2 year old gaming laptop bit the dust so, I built my daughter a cheap gaming rig out of an old, Dell Optiplex 7050 MT with a Gen 7 i7 7700 cpu...mainly as a fun project for an old IT guy. The 7050 already had Windows 10 Pro on it but, I rolled it to Windows 11 Pro and it kept the license, apps, and settings just fine. It's running 24H2, with all the security updates, and zero issues. The TPM 2.0 issue has been relaxed...for the most part.

Here's the build:
Dell Optiplex 7050 - Amazon - $237
Gen 7 i7 7700 Intel CPU - came with the Dell
Windows 11 Pro - Microsoft - free download
32GB Timetec DDR4 2400 RAM - came with the Dell
Nvidia GeForce 2060 6GB OC - Newegg Refurbished - $150
1 TB Crucial P310 NVME M.2 Drive - Amazon - $61
1TB Crucial BX510 SSD - came with the Dell
2TB Western Digital 7200rpm Hard Drive - came with the Dell
460W PSU by LXun - Amazon - $114

Grand total for a nice, cheap, sturdy gaming rig was $600 and it handles raytracing pretty decent. Some can do this build much cheaper. I was just grabbing stuff off the internet. She's getting about 65 FPS on high graphics settings. She's a hardcore raider and said the graphics were pretty damned amazing for such an old card. She said those setting would have crashed her laptop during raid. The laptop had an Nvidia 2050. Hard to believe that the 2060 is an old card. And holy crow...graphics cards are freaking insanely priced these days. I had no idea just how expensive they had become. Last, make sure to clean up the CPU and put down some fresh thermal paste.

I used this guy's guide to upgrade from WIndows 10 to Windows 11 on this PC and it worked great.

A ryzen 1800x uses the am4 platform and as long as your motherboard has been getting regular bios updates you should be able to drop in up to a 3000 series ryzen and possibly up to a 5000 series. Both of which would be windows 11 compatible

Work is forcing the update to 11 by October. Any reason I shouldn't go ahead and update? Have the more disastrous versions been dealt with? I have a secondary desktop I remote into occasionally running 11, but I don't use it enough to get familiar with the changes.

Our IT guys at work are always super slow to upgrade us until everything is stable; we have all upgraded to Win 11 a few months ago and no issues.

I've been running Win 11 at home for several years and no complaints.

I'm still not touching Windows 11 on anything I don't have to since 24h2 screwed up my laptop that came with 11.

This was my issue too. Simple fix but still Windows and Microsoft in general has been souring my views on them long enough I think I am going to go ahead and try to make the switch to Linux full time finally regardless.

Looking to update my home PC before the deadline and was unpleasantly surprised that it is not supported. I think the only 2 things I'm missing are below, but I'm including some other info below.

  • Unsupported processor (Intel i5-6600K)
  • No TPM 2.0

This desktop is an inherited custom build. It is a bit older but has done everything I need it to do better than my newer work laptops. A rarely game on PC anymore, so it's mostly used as a work device running multiple browser instances, multiple Excel files (not overly demanding files usually), Outlook, Teams, Word, etc. I do occasional video editing in Adobe (no issues with it).

I know there are some workarounds to get Windows 11 installed on unsupported devices, but I'd be more comfortable just upgrading for some peace of mind. I've never done a build or upgrade though, so I'm looking for where to start.

I was hoping I could just get a new processor that already has TPM built in, but the motherboard is an ASRock Z170 Extreme4 which looks like it may only support older gen processors. If I'd also need a new motherboard does that then potentially lead to other items needing to be upgraded/replaced?

Your PC is 10 years old (2016). TPM is motherboard based, not processor. You motherboard can't support a modern processor, your computer "is what it is" at this point.

Being that you don't use it for anything heavy workload, just ride it to its death. It's definitely not worth putting upgrade dollars into. 10 years is too far past the upgrade window time…. There's nothing modern or redeemable in that machine, except for maybe the power supply and the case, and even the power supply is a big maybe.

Not being sarcastic or high-brow, just honest.

When you decide to upgrade, you can get a machine at a Costco, etc, all day for 500 bucks that will be 10 times more powerful than that machine.

The absolute best CPU you could get for that motherboard is an i7-7700k, which is probably not even worth the upgrade over the 6600k. I would just start saving up for something new.

If you are feeling froggy and want to install Windows 11 on your machine anyway, there are a lot of tutorials out there on how do so with Rufus.
