This is so dumb. I have a big 65" Sony, 8 years old. Bricked. Won't turn on, won't do anything.

I looked at the recycling website and the only place near me accepting TVs is Best Buy, and they charge $59.99 and ONLY if you have another TV you bought there delivered to you. If you want them to come pick up your TV for recycling without purchasing anything they charge $199.99. They do not allow in-store dropoffs for anything over 50". Insanity.

My trash company bars people from throwing away TVs.

Set it on curb with a "free" sign taped to it, a mexican will take it within a few hours almost guaranteed. Trash company won't need to take it.

Our landfill has a secondary spot where you dispose of toxic and dangerous stuff. You could research your local landfill and see if you have this option.

Also recommend the curb tactic. I've literally had a guy waiting at the end of my driveway before as I'm walking stuff to the curb, and I just handed him crap without even setting it down.

Drop it at Goodwill. They'll test it before they put it on the floor and then chuck it in their dumpster if it doesn't work. Apartment complex dumpsters work well also, if you're into taking the not fully legal route.

See if there are any recycling events for electronics, our county(GA) has one a few times a year.

Worth a shot

Where do you live? There's a place on the NE side of Denton that takes any electronics for recycling for free. I dropped off several laptops and monitors there.

For TV recycling -- you are going to have to pay for it. I found a cheap recycler for some of my old TVs. It costs about $20.

What a deal for that guy. If you drop your TV off at my house along with $20, I'll "recycle" it too.

Best Buy lets you recycle TVs, but as the OP posted -- they charge. It's not a standard thing to recycle. Other options could include -- find an e-waste recycling company. They may take it.

I don't understand why anyone would pay to recycle their TV. Why would they charge for that?

Just leave it next to the dumpster.

I'm so spoiled... Own a small business so I have access to a commercial dumpster. I put everything in there.

Don't think I've ever thrown away a TV... I've always sold my old ones. What's toxic about a TV that you can't just throw away?

Convenience. There are also free drop-off programs for Household Hazardous Waste and E-Waste, but you have to drive a bit to get to those locations -- and I don't want to invest an hour in driving to recycle a TV.

TVs have materials in them that should not be put in landfills. That's why they should not be thrown in dumpsters.

This, TVs are disposable items now. When it stops working, throw it in the trash and go get a new one.

TVs are disposable items now -- since they are so cheap, but throwing them in the dumpster or leaving them at the curb is not the proper way to dispose of them.

Don't throw electronics and definitely do not throw lithium-ion batteries in the trash. Here's why -- they can cause dangerous fires in trucks, waste hauling sites and landfills:

I get why you shouldn't just throw your electronics in the regular trash, but charging people to properly dispose of them is just going to urge people to do exactly that...

Therein lies the problem.

And the two best solutions to this problem (a tragedy of the commons if you will) are to either include the cost of recycling in the TV cost (grr. Extra tax on my TV?!?!) or charge all people more for their trash to subsidize it. (Why should I have to pay for my neighbor to throw away a TV every Christmas?). Basically both options are politically unpopular so rather than getting a good solution we get no solution.

If you are near Austin, take to Bonds TV for repair. The actually have a technician that can fix tvs. I love my Samsung Plasma tv and it stopped working about a year ago. Took it to Bonds and he found a loose solder connection on one of the boards. He said tvs have a minuscule vibration that can weaken and break solder joints. It was an easy fix.

Just search for your city and electronics recycling. In Dallas, you can drop them off at any of the 3 transfer stations. It's free.

I don't know....I have a working 13 year old Sharp 75" ( I think) but still just want to get rid of it because of how heavy it is. Has to be well over 100 pounds. Heavy enough my wife can't help me move it.

And that has been a great TV w/ no issues, but not sure I'd ever say I "loved" one of my TVs....they're all very replaceable.

Fb marketplace or CL, sell it dirt cheap as working but say you must be able to load it. Easy to get rid of it especially when it works.
