So, my old desktop may have puked for good. Got the blue screen of death, tried to reboot but it will not. It either goes through the reboot loop if I select F2 "open Windows anyway". If I select F10 Launch Startup repair, it gets to a splash screen with some sort of background graphic and then does nothing, even with me letting it sit that way for over 24 hours.

I've done the thing where you hold down F9 while turning it on, getting me to a page that shows it has tested various components. All things that it shows pass the test. My next thing to try is a simple check to make sure the memory cards and other things are seated properly. Hope to tackle that today.

I've got another computer I'm using for now and if necessary I'll soldier on with it. But man, do I have a boatload of files I'd like to retrieve off the old one. I've been looking into buying one of those cases to put the hard drive into and see if I can access them. Has anyone here had luck doing that? If so, what case did you buy?

Windows partition being dead doesn't mean your files are lost for sure. Remove the hard drive, get an external enclosure for it, plug it into a working pc and try to browse the files on the drive.

Tried this, but no change. So I'll rip out the drive and order a case for it.

What version of windows are you running? As long as Bitlocker isn't enabled for some reason, you should be able to retrieve files. Bitlocker has bitten me in the butt a few times over the years..
