it didn't used to be that way. It just showed up (actually I think it was 18.6 or something). But it doesn't always show up split. Sometimes it's not split.

Just typical of iOS designers to change defaults or relocate settings for the sake of keeping their jobs.

You can change CarPlay settings from your phone and customize those views, there's also a button at the lower corner to flip between the split view and icon mode. There's always been the option, it may just default to that now.

Though TBH it was kinda cool to see my fantasy football matchup score show up when I was running errands on Sunday.

Anyone know if widgets can be displayed next to a main app like Waze or if the main app needs to get an update to support that?

Don't think apps in CarPlay have the ability to support widgets that I've seen, just the home screen. But there might be a Waze widget you can add to the home screen, you can configure those in your CarPlay settings on your phone.

Wife had to update her iPhone to iOS 18 b/c some apps stopped working. So of course now her watch does not get calls, texts anymore. OK, update the watch OS.....

Well, hours and hours later, still not done. First it would not update "Unable to Verify Update you are not connected to the internet"...BS.

Reset watch and phone. Unpair watch from phone, repair and initiate update. Finally goes through..or maybe not...now it's asking me to update AGAIN...same do loop, Unable to Verify update.

Online support Apple says to remove media from the watch in the watch app...Uhm, my watch isn't linked to the phone, HTF am I supposed to remove any media, not only that it can't do anything on the watch until it's paired. Also suggests to update the watch directly on the watch...again, you can't do anything on the watch unless it's paired to a phone.

Now on 5th attempt to unpair and pair the watch an update. 4 hours estimate time to complete.

FU Apple.

I scheduled a genius bar support request. We'll see how that goes. I imagine someone going thru the same steps I just did and we get to sit there and it does not work.

Or actually it will work, because the lawnmower won't start unless dad is standing there looking at it when you pull the handle.

I would like to take this opportunity to complain about my ipad Pro. For a few weeks now, it just randomly crashes back to the home screen. Does it quite a bit on this site.

Still can't figure out if it's possible to display Waze and a widget at the same time with CayPlay. I read that a "long press" on the widget area in the Dashboard view might allow me to pick another widget, but that doesn't seem to work. It may be a limitation of a 5 year old Highlander.

I tried yesterday with Sync in my car. Couldn't get them both at the same time.

Stopped by the Apple Store and found an appointment for later today.

Guy I talked with to get the appt. said his watch was doing the same thing and the only way he got it to work was to upgrade his OS to iOS26 and the watch to the watch 26 software update....awesome.

We'll see what they say when I got back later today. I'm now wishing I'd updated my wife's phone before iOS26 came out and it would likely have worked fine. It seems ludicrous that the watch 11.6 and iOS18.6, which should work fine, were great a month ago but now suddenly don't work.

Sounds like forced obsolescence to me. Or, and many will think this is unbelievable, they simply dropped the ball and didn't appropriately plan this release cross platform.

Unbelievable...took it to the "Genius Bar" and they didn't do anything but tell us what the guy said to me earlier. They have to send her watch off to some service center to force it to update to Watch 26 which means she has to update to iOS 26.

They were going to charge her and my wife told them "Uhm, NO, you forced me to make this update, this is on YOU". So they waived the $199 fee to make it work.

I want to be so pissed at Apple for this, but probably need to blame myself a little bit for not updating things sooner. I wanted to avoid iOS18 b/c I knew it screwed up the photos app and I didn't want my wife to have to deal with that (she is not IT savvy)* so I deleted it until it was forced on us. Now here we are.

* it's our mutually assured destruction policy. If she leaves, all her phones and computers fail. If I leave, I starve to death (she is a phenomenal cook)

EDIT: Forgot to add, when my wife asked "what happens if this doesn't work?" the guys said something about "you can trade in your watch for a new one"......she replied "screw that, I'm sick of your BS, I'll just go buy a Garmin and tell everyone I know you guys are dishonest"

I've had it in on 16 Pro for a week now. I turned the opacity on for icons/folder drawers and don't see any of the liquid glass garbage at all. I keep low battery mode on so maybe less background services are running, don't know if it really makes a difference.

I don't care for the way Photos now has the toggle for pic library vs albums, memories, videos, maps etc. Seems like a waste and makes you do more to get to what you're trying to view. iOS 18 was fine where when you scrolled past your photo stream, you could see all the other stuff.

On my iPad, the facial recognition hasn't kicked in yet for photos taken post-update.

It would be much preferable to have cloud/server-based AI like Google phones have for photos as opposed to the device-based battery eatery that Apple has tagged as a privacy feature. Google is way better at facial recognition, and if you use Apple cloud to store media, your pics are floating around in the cloud anyway.

If I'm going to care around a fancy spy device in my pocket all day, at least make it work pleasantly. But I guess a working device, privacy issues aside, doesn't sell more devices.

I like the CarPlay updates. One of the updates is on the main page (where you see the map, audio, calendar, etc all together) the score of my favorite teams is on that page when they play. My 4 year old son thought it was the coolest thing to see the Astros score updating when we were driving yesterday.

I would actually prefer the toggle and it would make me do less to get to what I'm trying to view. Sounds like a massive improvement to me.

However, I don't lose my absolute **** like most everybody else does when it comes to how the photos app work on my phone. It's near the bottom of the list of things I care about when it comes to mobile phones.

I'm unable to create backgrounds on text messages. When create a text and add a recipient nothing appears but their name. If I hold down the name their contact screen appears but no option for background.

My buddy created a background for our thread but no one else can see it. I assume everyone on the thread has to be on 26 in order for it to work.

What do you find to be trash? The liquid glass stuff is unnecessary for sure but I changed the transparency on apps and folders/drawers and don't see any of it.

I don't use Safari because it is a terrible browser altogether.

Honestly not sure why Apple put out an update aside from this being always what they do in the fall to coincide with the next device line release.

Seems like an update just to update but I don't hate it. Still some glitchy behavior to work out like when you are on a text message/iMessage and navigate to all messages there's a moment when only the most recent 6 messages are displayed before seeing every message.

Another new version is out.

Pros:
- Liquid glass but with the transparency turned down looks good
- Lock screen improvements
- They listened and fixed that atrocity that was the Photos app; now reset back to manageable top menus of just two: Library, and Collections
- Camera app now has better swiping feature to toggle between video/photo types; much quicker
- Search button being moved from top of phone to bottom of phone; took a few days to get used to but it's the more natural finger placement

It's been at the bottom before 26. You probably just overlooked it. I'm not sure when it was actually released, but I've been using it on 18 for some time.

I'm amazed when people upgrade and just don't notice all the bugs. There's post after post online about very obvious repeatable bugs.

If you go to settings->safari and go down to the tabs section, you can choose bottom instead of compact and it'll put it back to how it was the last OS.

Some of the liquid glass stuff can be reduced, in Setting/Accessibility but not completely eliminated. I was sending a text to a group and it kept shimmering a specific portion of the text message and I have no idea why. Very annoying. When I open the messenger/text ap, it only shows the first few text messages for about 1/2 second, then the rest of them fill into the row. Why would it do that? Oh, the iOS26 requires to much memory for my 12 to keep up.

And battery life is definitely reduced with the iOS 26 update. I'm already below 90% this morning and haven't used my phone any more than normal on a work day (hardly use it at work).

The setting/battery only goes back a week so of course it looks 'normal' but it's definitely not. I'm usually at 40% by bedtime and the last week it's been closer to 20%.

I'm to invested in the Apple ecosystem at this point to switch back to android, but damn Apple has some stupid people working for them. They probably create a pool with each update to see which new setting will cause the most grief online and that person's setting change wins for that month.

Again, y'all need to wait until the first couple of patches come out. This happens with EVERY SINGLE MAJOR IOS SW RELEASE.
