I know this could be easily answered by making a trip to Audio Video since they did the original install when the house was built but wanted to educate myself before doing so.

Built house a couple years ago and had ethernet and coaxial run throughout the house into a centralized closet.

The ethernet is all installed into a junction box (?) with one cable outbound w/o a connector, just a loose cable. I assume this is the input cable bring the signal into the box.

The internet wiring and router were installed upstairs (not in closet). I was not home when this was done and the tech didn't want to put it in the closet so my wife didn't fight him.

What are my options to get a signal into the junction box? Can I reverse the signal thru my pre-existing wiring? Out of router, into upstairs wall outlet, identify cable from upstairs wall outlet in the closet, snip out of the junction box and splice into the input cable?

Appreciate any thoughts on this issue.

That should work.

What type of internet? Fiber? Cable? If its cable, you may be able to use the coax to get a path back to your closet and move the modem/router. If not, leaving the modem upstairs and running back to the closet over ethernet should work just fine.

Did the tech run a whole new wire from outside to the new spot? He should have used the preinstalled one. I would have the tech come back out and fix it correctly if so.

Fiber.

Fatzilla, yes is the answer. when you say "pre-installed", what are you referring to?

Is there an easy way to identify which ethernet cable in my closet is coming from my upstairs router if I plug it in?

Nothing is labeled so i have no idea where/what is coming into the closet.

If your house has pre-wiring for ethernet, the main closet will have ethernet and coax most likely running to your exterior of the house. That is what the tech is supposed to use for hookup to main line outside. It sounds like they just drilled new hole and ran new wire instead of using prewire like they were supposed to.

You can get a cheap-o cable tester from Amazon for like 10 bucks

Perhaps a dumb question, but the ethernet from throughout my house is hard wired into the junction box so that tester wouldn't work? Unless i get a short pigtail to plug into each of the slots in the junction box and into tester?

Some pictures of this "junction box" might help. Lol

I'm looking to upgrade my home networking too. The house is wired with Cat 5e and coax. Am I right that if I don't want to rewire the house I should not use the Ethernet since it's limited to 1 gbps but use the Coax with MoCA 2.5 adapters (theoretical 2.5 gbps) for best speed? Or is it practical to go completely wireless with a mesh setup?

A tester is easiest but a device like the modem or router sending back to the closet will work. Just keep checking each one in the box. You'll need a short patch cable to plug in. Once you know which port is the right one. You can plug a switch in the box and use it to feed other ports.

What you are calling a junction box is a patch panel. You need a 16 port switch and 16 short patch cables. Connect each port on the patch panel to a port on the network switch using a short patch cable. Using a long patch cable, connect the LAN port on your router to the nearest modular wall jack. Now all the other modular wall jacks in your house are ready for devices.

Cat 5e is not guaranteed above 1G but if was installed And terminated well it in general works fine with 2.5G
I have lots of drops of plain cat. 5.that work fine on 2.5
Wireless has come a long way but wires always win.
