Every few days I get a Delivery Status Notification (failure) on a gmail address I have. The email addresses they are coming from appear to be derivatives of my email address from different @domains.

What is going on here? Someone spoofing my email? I don't have any other sign that anyone is in control except me.

I get the same thing periodically with my gmail. Usually 2 or 3 in a day, then nothing for a couple weeks. My assumption is that they are phishing attempts, wanting me to try to correct an email they are trying to make me think I sent. I've just been ignoring but if this is something more nefarious I'm open to suggestions.

I'm curious about this as well. The ones I get appear at the top to be identical to legitimate messages from mailer-daemon@googlemail.com, but in a real undeliverable, the message you sent is truncated at the bottom behind a three dot kebab button "..." with "Show trimmed content" to view what you sent, and it always is part of a conversation including the email that I actually sent.

These always just have a spam email at the bottom (ie its not truncated) with images and generally show an "email" that is not from me but is from some crazy email address and also doesnt match the email that it says it wasnt able to deliver to.

I assume this is some kind of a way to deliver 90's and 2000s style **** spam in a way where it cant be filtered or something.

Its basically someone spoofing your email as the sender for junk mail. So the servers are responding to what they see as the sender with the rejections. Nothing you can really do.

That was happening a while back with my wife's Hotmail. After digging around and being pointed in the right direction, I found that a Rule had been setup forwarding all incoming emails to an email address which was apparently bogus. That generated a flood of failed delivery message from the Outlook postmaster. Once I deleted the rule, the issue went away. We changed her Outlook password and some others that showed up as "leaked".

I found this AI guidance in Google:

Quote:

To remove a forwarding address in Gmail, go to Settings > See all settings > Forwarding and POP/IMAP. In the "Forwarding" section, click Disable forwarding and then click Save Changes at the bottom of the page. If forwarding is still active, check Settings > Filters and Blocked Addresses for any rules that may be forwarding messages and delete them.

This sounds like a good time for a reminder that you should be using a password manager and multi-factor authentication on EVERYTHING, to include and especially webmail and financial accounts.
