This is my 90 year old Mother-in-law's TV that started acting up a few days ago. It's 6 1/2 years old IIRC and has been trouble free until now. The issue is that somehow it is switching from HDMI input to the Samsung TV Plus app. I used the Source button on the remote to change to HDMI 1, which is the input for her cable box. It was OK for a few minutes but then somehow switched back to the app. I searched for this issue and based on that I opened Settings, selected Smart Features then disabled the following:

  • Autorun Smart Hub
  • Autorun Last App
  • Autorun Samsung TV Plus
Changed Source to HDMI 1 and everything was fine, until the next day. When she turned the TV on, she couldn't change channels. I checked and it was back on the app. A Google search suggested that the cable box could somehow be sending a "wake up" signal to the TV which would then start the app. In Settings, I selected External Device Manager and disabled Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) as suggested. I changed Source to HDMI 1 again. I turned the TV off then back on and it would go back to the app.

Then I found that you can theoretically "remove" the Samsung TV Plus app. On the Home screen, I clicked on Apps and highlighted the TV Plus app. Then use the arrow down key to bring up options to Move or Remove the app. I selected Remove and then Confirm. Now the app no longer appears with the other apps on the Home screen. Again selected HDMI 1, turned the TV off then back on and had the same result, the TV Plus app was again selected. I moved the HDMI cable to input 2 and retested with the same result. If the HDMI input is selected, it will stay on that until the TV is turned off and reverts back to the TV Plus app on restart. So apparently removing it from the Home screen does only that. It's not actually deleting the app from the TV.

I showed her how to select the HDMI input and wrote down the button sequence to use and of course that "didn't work" this morning for her. I went over and had her repeat it with me watching and it was just fine. Typical. Whether she can successfully navigate to the cable box tomorrow morning is to be determined.

I'm not finding anything else, so far, to try and resolve this issue. Anyone seen this and know of a solution?

If she doesn't use any smart features, disconnect it from the internet.

She doesn't use any apps, only the cable box. I will try disabling the internet. Good suggestion.

Do a full factory reset on the tv and never agree to the TOS during setup. All the smart features are never enabled. Had similar issues with my visio where it will auto swap to the stupid ****ing hub everytime it loses input signal from hdmi i was using. So like putting the ps5 to sleep or turning the cable box off, if i left the tv on for 15 seconds like this, it auto swaps to hub. Once the TOS is agreed to, you can never truly turn that garbage off.

Also, go into settings and set start up source channel to either your HDMI 1 if that's all she uses or to Last Used if you swap devices at all. It's likely set to the stupid hub here in these settings too.

I "think" it's resolved (fingers crossed). I will know for sure tomorrow when she turns it on to watch the news.

I disabled the internet as suggested and still the TV Plus app would auto start. I then did the factory reset without enabling internet and that seems to have done the trick. I turned the TV Off and back On a few times, it stayed on the cable box input every time. I had previously done the factory reset but without first disabling internet and that didn't work.

Thanks for the help!

Welp, the TV Plus app Autorun issue is still there. If the HDMI input is manually selected, the TV stays on that as long as it is left On. Turn it Off and back On right away and all is good. However, if it's turned Off for a longer duration, then it reverts back to the TV Plus app when turned back On.

Look for a default source option in the settings. I had that on one of mine before and had to change it to last input used instead of a specific one.

This is from Google for your tv.

  • Press the Home button on your Samsung remote.
  • Navigate to Settings > All Settings.
  • Go to General & Privacy > Start Screen Options.
  • Turn OFF the feature labeled Start with Smart Hub Home.
  • Turn ON the feature labeled Auto Run Last App (or Autorun Last Input).

I turned on Autorun Last App. I'll get another update in the morning.

Im out of ideas here tbh. It might be time to bite the bullet and get her a new TV. The time you have to keep spending on fixing this isnt worth the small cost of a new TV. A comparable 4k TV in the same size is like $250 for a reputable brand. I know the Roku TV's can be set to always load up the last input each time (I set one up for my moms gust room last year) and they are dirt cheap in the 42" range assuming that was what she had? Can help you find something easy to use for her if we know a budget and max size. Usually with old eyes, the bigger the better lol

Yeah, not sure if she will want to buy a new set or not. Money is not an issue but I'm guessing as long as she can select the cable box HDMI input she will just continue with that. The existing TV is 65" and I imagine she would want the same if it's replaced.

Frustrating situation, really appreciate your efforts to help.
