Stores should just get rid of returns. You buy it, you're stuck with it.

Or just require a receipt. If you don't have the receipt you get 50% of the purchase price because the store is going to lose that when they have to re-entry it and then sell it again at a discount.

Wife said the Target by our home now requires all things in the electronic department be bought at that register. At their last inventory they were missing something like $30k in inventory.

That almost seems like an internal job.

People are stealing CONSTANTLY at these stores. If you actively look for it, it won't take you long to spot it. The debasement of our culture in the race to competitively consume regardless of personal production is becoming alarming.

When I worked at a construction supply business, you would be surprised at the strange things we saw. Concrete finishers would take 2 left handed gloves leaving the 2 right handed gloves. Folks at the counter were busy and didn't catch it. We did inventory every six months. In that time frame we had over 300 "pairs" of right handed gloves. Talk about a pita. My facility is the one who "caught" it. When all stores counted their glove inventory, there were several thousand "pairs" of right handed gloves.

All this to save about $2.00. Once that came to light, we only sold gloves by the dozen in sealed boxes. Pissed some contractors off but when we told them why, they understood.

Or you have to provide your id when you return something and you get one return every five years

What caused them to need just left handed gloves?

Academy sold you know. It's a corporate store like *****. Changed a lot. The cc store is a waste of time. I asked them one day why they only have guns and no fishing gear. They literally had nothing to sell for fishing. The reply was, "corporate cutback and hasn't sent us anything". Kinda hard to believe that here of all places you don't have gear.

I bought one of their in house rods. Lol. I paid around $70 bucks. It broke. Went to return it and it was worth $15.00. Lol. They keep switching models so they'll never have the one you purchased. No receipt, no return. I get that on everything except their in house-house stuff. When I bought it ( several actually) the bug selling point was I didn't need to keep up receipts. They lied. No big deal but I don't go in there anymore. I use to locw that place. Would go in just to look. The smaller, custom shops are making a big comeback. A lot of the gear now days has a MAP and the small guys can compete on price and their service kicks the **** out of the box stores.

Ok rant over. That rod deal just pisses me off. I hate being lied to.

Being a small mom and pop shop and competing against big box stores is tough in any retail segment. My wife has a boutique that specializes in stuff for expecting and new mothers. Some stuff she has is also carried at Target, some of the specialty stuff is usually only online. Customers come to her store, spend time trying on merchandise, getting advice from the staff, and as soon as she is about to make a sale, they ask "Do you price match with Amazon?" Or they run down the street to buy at Target to save $2. Retail is a hard place to make a living these days, and crappy customers don't help the bottom line.

I understand. I do some buying for customers.

The vendors that use MAP pricing allow smaller stores to compete with big box which is no competition . The smaller stores have better service.

Penn is a good example. Their reels are the same price anywhere. Most of them. If you can buy the same reel at a big box store vs a smaller store where the guy selling it is also going to warranty it and service it , I see no contest. In cc a smaller store has exploded. Roy's bait and tackle, simply because academy sold to a big corporation and sux. He's killing it hand over fist simply because he has what you need, ALL the time and he has great service. Not a kid who could care less. He needs your business

Hang in there. Try to find those products that don't ***** themselves out. There's more out there than people realize.

People just assume the big box stores are the lowest price. Not true in all cases. Even the internet is the same price on map products. Map lets stores compete on service.

A lot of manufacturers are using the map now to keep the brick and mortar guys from going out of business. If the internet is the only place to buy it, the manufacturer can sell it cheapest of all. Like you said. People want to see it. Smaller, specialty stuff is coming back slowly right now. People want service--on certain goods. I feel your pain.

"Vortex Crossfire scopes that are $140 plus a $50 Academy gift card."

I was just looking at this scope/offer.

Is this a decent scope / deal?

My friend's wife works in loss prevention for Walmart. She says people just walk out the door with TVs and other electronics because they know the employees wont stop them. Others run a scam on weak-minded cashiers where they activate gift cards and then pay in a back and forth combination of various amounts of cash and cards and end up confusing the cashier to the point where they walk out with all the cash they had originally AND the new gift cards.

Concrete finishers only wear one glove generally on the hand they trowel with. I got it backwards earlier (it's only been about 8 years since it happened). They took the right handed gloves and left the left handed gloves.

Stuff like this is why I like the policy at McCoy's. I have a good buddy who used to manage one of their stores and he said that when he first got promoted to manager Brian McCoy (at least I think it was Brian, it may have been his son) sat down with him and talked to him about company values. One of those was that they would not tolerate theft of any scale and company policy was to prosecute theft, even something as small as a few pencils. This applied to employees or customers.

The other I liked was that any lawsuit brought against them would be taken to court. They would not settle even if they thought they would lose, in order to set the precedent that they were not someone to file frivolous lawsuits against.

Anyone who has ever worked box store retail knows this is very common. I worked for a manufacturer who did a lot of business with home Depot. It's crazy the amount of returns on lawn and garden equipment and power tools.
I worked at a Lowes for 4 months, 20 years ago.

In the time I was there, I sold 22 chainsaws. 19 of them were returned within 3 days because they "didn't work". Of course they cranked right up for me...
Most of the time that chainsaws were returned it was listed as "leaking oil". People would see a small amount of oil in the case and freak out.

Some of the better ones I saw were bricks in resealed tool combo kit boxes.

Reviving an old thread

I was in this store today and was reminded of this thread.

I went in to buy a pair of Old Man Skechers. When I was checking out there was a dude at the return desk trying to return a bunch of stuff. I guess at some point Academy instituted a policy that for returns you have to provide the receipt or show ID. This guy was all tatted up and wearing his hat all cocked to the side. He didn't have a receipt, and refused to provide ID. "I didn't have to show ID to buy it. Why do I have to show it now?". They explained that is the policy, no exceptions. He got pretty pissed off and started cussing. One of the cashiers told home he shouldn't cuss in front of children. He eventually got pissed off enough and left about the time the manager showed up. They told him he could leave the merch, but he took it with him.

Glad Academy changed their policy.

Worked at a grocery store throughout HS. Every few months, a lady would come in with a bag full of groceries and want to return the bag (no receipt). She just wanted in store credit. Finally figured out after 2-3 times that she was buying on sale, returning at full price to buy the next on sale items, repeat and repeat across numerous stores to make supplemental income. The lengths that some people go to.

I didn't know that you could return groceries.

I realize this is an old thread, but I know someone who will return a watermelon if it's not sweet enough.

I've returned one food item in my life. Can't remember if it was a grocery pick up or something my wife grabbed, but it was some chicken that smelled awful. I brought it back to HEB, told them it was rotten and he refunded it no questions asked. Didn't even smell it to see if I was lying.

Normally all Stores give you the lowest price on an item over the last 30-60 days if you don't have a receipt.

That grocery store should done that.
