I'm not a pilot but fly a a lot as a passenger for work. A 30k ft decent in 10 mins while fast, doesn't seem extreme. Now I'm sure if you heard a sound and the captain comes on to tell you that an emergency landing needed to take place, it would feel like an eternity and be scary as heck. Glad everyone was safe in the end.

If I had to WAG, probably 800 or so feet per minute faster than normal up high and 1500 or so feet per minute faster down low.

Most airline type flying is a 3 degree descent or 300 feet per mile.

So 2100-2400 feet a minute at Mach .7-.8 and 1000-1200 feet per minute down low at 250 KIAS

Just made the short hop from GDJ to SEP for some Hard Eight with the wife and kiddos in the "new" Cherokee. They came and picked us up as advertised and we had a great little evening. Highly recommended for a smokey twist on the $100 hamburger.

Regrettably as close to Kyle as I'll get the rest of the season. CFO-CXO earlier today.

Wait. You flew 30 miles straight down 377 for barbecue?

That's hilarious.

I once flew from Lubbock to Alpine and returned a Redbox dvd. Where have you flown as a pilot?

Practicing emergencies is very common during training exercises. So when the real thing happens you just fall into the pattern of doing what you've practiced many times.

Yeah I am not a pilot so maybe it's easier than I think, but where he chose to do it is what I was referring to. He basically seemed to have one option on where he had to get to, with who knows what winds coming off those mountains, and he was committed once he went to the ravine. I'm assuming had he tried to restart it would have taken 5 or ten seconds to get control back, which he didn't really have there. But hey, he seemed fine with it and all's well that ends well.

Congrats. Not many people can say they have piloted a plane solo.
I solo'd in 2004, certificate in '05. I still have my solo shirt framed and hung in my office.
Advice?? Go up at least 2x a week with your instructor, 3x if you have the time between lessons to study.
Airplanes fly in weather so it's never too early to start studying up on that topic.l
Join AOPA and EAA, they have lots of good resources and community message boards.

Good luck. Keep us posted on your progress.

Congratulations! Heartily agree with this post- you'll find a community in those groups. And can't 'foot-stomp' the advice on WX knowledge and experience enough.

I'm in the ATC systems business (ACARS, radars, ADS-B. WAAS. ATC automation and WX systems) and there is no other career I can think of that I'd rather do.

Best of luck and always remember the 'mantra' I make my grandchildren embrace: SAFETY FIRST!

I have a flight bag I don't use anymore. Looks similar to the sportys original but both ends are zipper pockets not just one.

Free to anyone on this site that pays shipping for it, reach out to me at Charlie Brown crew @ gmail. Bonus points for a high schooler or young aviator but I'm not picky.
