A friend of mine is having some brown spots show up in her yard. They start small and expand. The yard is watered regularly. Does anyone know what they may be and how to treat them? Location is Smithville. Grass was put in about a year ago.

I'm about to put iron out on mine. I have crappy soil and read that the yellow spots I'm getting could be iron deficiency (not bugs) even though I fertilized this spring. Bermuda grass for me.

Could be grubs. Does it pull up easy ?
A natural gas leak can cause brown spotting. Does your friend have a gas line close to the area?
Do little moths fly up when walks through his yard? Spots could be sod web-worms. Pretty sure that's what i have
Not saying it's not chinch bugs, but they usually like the hottest, driest parts of the yard.....next to driveways, sidewalks and curbs where the heat radiates off the surfaces. Can't really tell from the pics, but gray leaf spot is an issue this time of year. It can be in sun or shade and you'll see small gray diamond-shaped lesions on the leaf blades and even the runners.
You need to fix your yard and quit worrying about others. You not gonna win yard of the month with that look. And pick up the damn white claw cans too!

Brown patch. Apply fungicide and cut back on water. Consider dethatching.

Based on the weeds starting to come up in the pictures it looks like he is watering too much and patch is starting to set in.

Brown patch for me too. Battling a batch of it in full sun while 90% of the rest of my lawn is in the best shape ever. Neighbor's grass right next to it is very nice. I put down peat moss in the spring and didn't hit this spot with fungicide quick enough when it started. Now I'm playing catch up and letting the bermuda fill in for now.
What you need to do is a controlled burn and really impress your neighbors with your superior lawn rejuvenation skills.
Is your neighbor an attractive divorce? The answer to this question will have some baring on how you should proceed.

I'll be damned, there is a white claw can in the picture!
That is 100% not brown patch
not brown patch. check for insects. visibly check for worms (sod webworms) in the thatch. pull the sod up and see if it separates easily. could be a sign of grubs. lastly, look closely in thatch layer for tiny black bugs wit h white wings, which would be chinch bugs.
Grubs. Get some insecticide on it ASAP.
