Dear Diary. I go through this every couple of years when I buy firewood. I decided to stop using my usual guy because his cords kept shrinking. I've talked to no less than 6 people three that scheduled delivery but never showed. Finally got a guy to deliver who promised a full cord, not a "face" cord. I got the most egregious short cord ever delivered. Seems to me if you are selling something by volume you would know what volume you are delivering. I sent this guy back to get more. This calculates to .56 cord.

Firewood delivery guys usually compete with extended auto warranty and TruGreen for shadiest business practices.

Yeah, my guess is that most firewood guys think that a cord = "a lot" or whatever fits in their trailer/truck.

Golden Tree in Lewisville just fills up the back of your truck until it won't take nay more for about $60.

If you have a chainsaw, always downed trees (especially oak) that you can harvest.

No kidding.

This is an absolutely true account of an exchange I had with a kid working at a hardware store when I was standing at the bulk hose rack:

KID: Sir, need some help?

ME: Thanks. I need to buy some 3/4" OD braided vinyl water hose.

KID: How long do you want?

ME: 48"

KID: I'm sorry sir, we only sell it by the foot.

ME: OK. I'll take 4'.

It's hilarious if it weren't so sad.

Damn firewood place popped by my house stated splitting and stacking last spring. 30 pieces for $20...

I can see that for some of the species they claim to have, but hell no for plain oak firewood!

For a little humor about the situation, when I called him out on how short the cord was, he blamed his wife. He said she was the one who loaded the trailer. I didn't have the heart to tell him that he was never going to get a cord in the dinky trailer he hauled it in and if he did, it would probably break the axles.

I needed some chain for a gate and asked the kid at the hardware store to cut me 3 feet. Walking around the store to pick up other stuff I looked at the piece he cut and could tell it was too short. I found the guy and showed him it was too short and he said "the tape measure he used was probably wrong".

I have an old cross fence that needs to be taken out, you can have all the firewood you want if you cut it all down and haul it away.

Centerville/Buffalo area.

Nope, just an old cross fence. There's an old pier and beam house built before indoor plumbing was in vogue that needs to go, but I think my dad is wanting to put the bulldozer to that himself.

I usually get a "half cord" every fall. What actually gets delivered is a pickup load full.

I think the issue is that it is literally a shade tree profession so the people that get into it because it doesn't require any licensing, has no regulation, and limited up front costs fail to recognize that words mean things and "cord" is one of those words with a finite meaning.

I get oak for smoking from a guy who made 2'x2', 4'x4', and 4'x8' metal frame. All is good…except he cuts the wood 16" lengths, so you are always receiving 3/4 of what you pay for.

Everybody knew back in the day, you never bought a dime bag because it was the same as a nickel. Same thing. Only buy a half cord.

I've bought firewood from one place where a cord was actually a cord. They stacked their wood in 16' runs that were over 4' tall.

What's wrong with 16" cuts? 3 rows in a 4x8 footprint is the full cord.
I believe he's saying 16" isn't long enough to stack on the 24" wide metal rack that he had made for it.

Firewood is typically sold in 16" lengths, That is the standard

Ahhh...but was it stove-length or fireplace-length? That's how they get you up in my neck of the woods. Then again, if you want stove-length and get fireplace length, no fun cutting everything in half.

Doesn't sound like the guy cutting standard 16" lengths is the problem.

This. If my dads firewood guy showed up with 16" lengths he would be fit to be tied, cuz he wants 24"-28" for his fireplace.

OP's pic looks like more than half a cord to me. What's the length and height and width of the pile?

I have a friend who sells firewood for a living in DFW, and he charges I think $450 per cord.

I sold some firewood this year, I advertised the exact amount I was selling by showing pictures of it stacked, and pictures of it in the bed of my truck. I was one truck-bed worth. Probably technically about 0.4 cords or so. I sold it for $200. Turns out the lady who bought it used to work in a firewood/tree service family business, and she thought she was getting a good deal, and she would know.

I've sold some firewood. Split while I'm at dads in SE Texas and bring back to the Panhandle. It floored me when I delivered an actual cord to a guy and asked him where he wanted the wood that wouldn't fit in his firewood rack. "The last guy was able to put a cord of wood in that rack". Sir, the last guy hosed you. I'm not sure what to tell you. I sold him a half cord that barely fit in his rack. His neighbor came over and asked if the other cord on the trailer was for sale and he bought it.

They still call me every year for firewood (I haven't hauled for several years). They are disappointed because that year they got actually seasoned oak firewood, not junk elm or whatever the Lawncare service cut up that year.

Most of it was around 20"-24". That's why they stacked a little higher than 4'.
