Thread title says it all, driving from B/CS to DFW to pick up Dad Sunday, then to SE Arkansas Monday for a week of duck hunting and R&R with my dad, uncle, and BIL. Looking like the ducks will be thin but memories will be made.

I enjoy narrative history, military history, ancient history, some fiction here and there. Also politics and philosophy when I can, but don't find those easy to digest in audio format. Need to have print in front of me I can re-read.

Pretty much have check-boxed most of the OB classic recommendations: Empire of Summer Moon, Blood & Thunder, the Emerald Mile, have listened to all of Dan Carlin's podcasts (huge fan). Elmer Kelton (the time it never rained and the day the cowboys quit) have already been read.

Was planning on listening to one of Dan Jones' medieval history books (templars, crusades, plantagenates, his new one is called Powers & Thrones and is a bit of an epic) but if there is something that you guys think is outstanding, please give me some other options. Dan Jones' medieval history might put my dad to sleep for the entire 11 hour drive.

The Daily Stoic. Look for his longer pods where he interviews coaches, CEOs, military leaders, authors, etc.

It may not fit with your listed genres but the best audiobook I've ever listened to is "American Kingpin" about the silk road. Whole story is crazy.

That being said, Lonesome Dove, American Buffalo (Rinella), and Across the fence (Vietnam book) have been ones I've really enjoyed recently

Last year I listened to "Manhunt" by James Swanson and really enjoyed it. It is the story of the weeks following Lincoln's assassination and the hunt for Booth. Very interesting.

Churchill's Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare was awesome when I did it on Audible.

Story after story of how his commandos followed his instructions to "set Europe ablaze". Real life James Bond stuff, and I think Ian Fleming even gets some serious run time.

Really fun listen

Entertaining fiction aka "brain candy"

I just listened to the first book in the Longmire series by Craig Johnson, The Cold Dish. This is the series that the Longmire series is based upon.

The Bosch series and the Lincoln Lawyer series by Michael Connelly are pretty good, too.

I listened to American Buffalo by Steven Rinella a while back and really enjoyed it. Seems kind of in line with your interests. He narrates the audiobook himself which is always a plus in my opinion.

I just listened to the Boys in the Boat about the 1936 gold medal Olympic rowing team. If you've ever played a team sport it will hit home.

Also since you mentioned politics The Coddling of the American Mind I cannot recommend highly enough.

If you haven't read The Fountainhead, I'd do that first. Sets the stage for a lot of the ideas Rand presents in Atlas Shrugged.

I liked The Fountainhead a lot more than AS. It's more conceptual in presenting her philosophy, while AS is pretty preachy and less well-written in my uneducated opinion.

Also if you are in the Civil War mood I really enjoyed Escape from Andersonville on audio by the retired actor Gene Hackman.

The Wake of the Perdido by Hackman was also a great audio listen.

See my thread on the politics board. The Four Winds is communist propaganda. It's a good story. But the author uses many stereotypes as a crutch. Bad people are almost 100% rich Caucasians.

Now, I understand that the poor migrants that went to CA were very poorly treated. But this book is, in the end, communist drivel.

Thread update, my hatred of COVID just went to another level. Why does the chyna virus have to mess with a man's duck hunt? Come on!!!!!

Uncle called yesterday morning, he went to hunt ducks w a buddy of his in NE Arkansas middle of last week. Came home with 4 ducks and the 'vid. He's doing fine, but trip is cancelled this week. May be hosed for the year, small chance we go up around the 22nd for the last week of the season.
