Annual thread bump - what do you guys have for me this year. Headed to Arkansas Sunday, 9 hours up and back, need a new infusion of audiobooks.

Last one completed from this list was Last Stand of the Tin Can Soldiers. It was excellent.

Hornfischer's other books on the navy are all good.

Annie Jacobson has some good books on the US military history:
Surprise, Kill, Vanish is about CIA paramilitary operations and is eye opening

She wrote a nuclear war scenario book called "Nuclear war" that while based around a hypothetical nuclear war, is really about the machinations of the chain of command, who makes the decisions, what time limits and information they would have at the point of making those decisions. Its really interesting

The Ian Toll series on the Pacific War is great:
Pacific Crucible: War at Sea in the Pacific, 19411942,
The Conquering Tide: War in the Pacific Islands, 19421944
Twilight of the Gods: War in the Western Pacific, 19441945

Rise And Kill First is about Mossad and their targeted assassination program

Max Hastings has some really good military history books

Command and Control is about US Nuclear accidents and how insane we were on how we handled some of the most devastating weapons that ever existed.

I just saw I recommended "Last stand of the tin can Sailors" earlier in this thread. I hope I can claim some credit for you reading it, and glad you liked it. It was a remarkable chain of events with incredible gallantry on the behalf of a small group of sailors.

For Fiction:

I have enjoyed the Joe Pickett Books by CJ Box. They're about a Wyoming Game Warden.

There is the Mike Bowditch series by Paul Doiron about a Maine Game Warden that are pretty good as well.

There is also a series about a New Mexico cop named Kevin Kerney written by Michael McGarrity.

Lastly, there's a fairly new series about a former Special Ops guy who owns a ranch in the panhandle of Texas. Written by Taylor Moore. Garrett Kohl Series.

Tom Clancy books are great. My favorite is Red Storm Rising but they are all good.
So the greatest civilization is one where all citizens are equally armed and can only be persuaded, never forced. It removes force from the equation... and that's why carrying a gun is a civilized act.

Goodbye to a River - Widely considered a Texas literary classic. I enjoyed the audible version.

Lone Star - Feels like a comprehensive audit of Texas history. Fehrenbach goes into great detail, because of this it is difficult to get through at times. The audiobook runs 39+ hours

As you mentioned you like Empire of the summer moon, check out Allan Eckert. He has a lot on the founding of New England areas in the late 1700 and the conflicts with indians in said area.

Then if you want something different, check out The Survivalist Series.

The if you want to zone out and listen to a book about monsters getting shot.

Those are great. I loved most of O'Reilly's "Killing" books. I think I've read all but 2. Kennedy, Reagan, and Jesus are great too.

Just finished Blood and Thunder: An Epic of the American West by Hampton Sides. Basically Empire of the Summer of Moon but for New Mexico, Arizona, California, etc. It follows the life of Kit Carson and instead of focusing on the Comanche focuses on the Navajo.

I could not get into blood and thunder. I also read it after Empire of the summer moon so maybe it was just a bit of a letdown compared to that. And I really like Kit Carson and history of that region. Maybe I should try it again.

Listened to The Big Rich a month or so ago....really interesting and learned a lot about the people whom a number of streets/buildings/parks are named after across the state of Texas.

The following are the best books I've ever read....if they're available on audiobook I don't think you could go wrong:

Lonesome Dove - McMurtry

Pillars of the Earth - Follett

The Long Walk - Rawicz - true story of several prisoners who escaped a soviet gulag and their trek back to civilization (made into a movie called The Way Back)

We Die Alone - Howarth - true story of Jan Baalrud, a Norwegian commando, and his escape from Nazi occupied Norway after a failed sabotage attempt (made into a movie called The 12th Man)

Band of Brothers - Ambrose - the book the mini-series is based off of

Empire of the Summer Moon - Gwynne - mentioned above

Beneath a Scarlet Sky - Sullivan - based on true story of italian boy who leads an underground railroad of Jews across the Alps to escape Nazi occupied Italy

The Winter Fortress - Neal Bascomb - true story of Norwegian resistances attempt to blow up a Nazi heavy water facility to slow down their attempt at making an atomic bomb

In the Unlikeliest of Places - Berkovits - biography of Nachman Libeskindn written by his daughter. He survived pre-war Polish prison, escaped the Nazis, survived a soviet gulag, escaped to Isreal, then to the US. Insane story.

Nice! Killing Lincoln got me into the Civil War. Have read Rebel Yell and Hymns of the Republic after reading Killing Lincoln.

I am right there with you on all accounts.
Blood & Thunder just felt really, really long & I kept losing focus.

Annual thread bump. Leave for Arkansas Monday. Going with The Hunter Killers based on my interests and Cowdoc's endorsement.

Duck report is poor this year, but much fun will be had with my dad uncle and BIL. Not sure how many more hunts dad has in the tank, so each year this trip is special.

The beast in the clouds was a great read.

Then the river or doubt by the same author was also good (not as good).

Currently reading the river of the gods by the same author and enjoying it more than the river of doubt

Also reading a walk in the park about through hiking the Grand Canyon which has been good

Not audio yet, but written by one of our own, Neil Turner's "Daddy Essays". It is an excellent read and well worth the time. As some of you know, Neil has left many of his essays here about he and Alex his son. Many of us have been after him to publish, and he has. Like I said, EXCELLENT READ.
