You mention 7.5, 3 times, in your opening paragraph. Tells me that your group is spot welded to something someone told you based on "science". Yes, 7.5 is a great age to harvest a deer, its not the be all end all.

Never said age is the only thing ............but thanks for the comments. Age is one of the most important criteria for growing trophies. Not just to allow the buck to grow to their full potential, it is also very important to keep the right genetics in the gene pool longer. Growing trophy deer takes the right process and the right people. We have the process, just need a couple more people. Let me know if you are interested. Thanks

To the OP, you're going to get negative comments and you deserve them from anyone who has read the lease agreement. I won't judge your group's attempt to exploit random hunters, but soliciting fellow Aggies into this oligarchy is bad bull.

Yep.

If you haven't emailed him for the lease rules, do it. Jaw dropping.

I forwarded to a handful of friends…you know, just in case they wanted to join. Definitely not to share in my astonishment. Definitely not.

Well more hunters, which leads to better odds of finding someone foolish or desperate. However, most likely some dudes will shut him down and his arrogance. I hate to be that way but that lease agreement is ridiculous and the condescending attitude towards anyone calling it out by saying they are just not willing to work or sacrifice for big deer is crazy.

It works for them so great, but that lease should be filled rather quickly and it hasn't been to no one's surprise.

I would like to see the lease rules too. I hunt on a ranch in South Texas and the owner subjects us to some pretty onerous rules. If OP's lease is like mine, I don't blame him for being upfront about the rules.

We have a lot of great hunters on the ranch and host some great events. We do "Hero Hunts" every year for the last 12 years where we open the ranch to wounded veterans. We opened it up to include first responders this year and partner with the TPWD for their youth hunting program to introduce youth into the hunting world. I have attached a few pics of the Hero Hunt this year. I get it, this ranch is not for everyone. I hope you all find what you are looking for . Got your guidelines so others can see before inquiring.

Last Names have been redacted

Quote:

Welcome to the Slator Ranches, West

This is a Trophy deer lease. All guidelines are set forward to justify the ability to grow Trophy deer. All trophy deer must be pre-approved by Brad, Jerry, and Mitch before harvesting. Our guidelines are a product of over 28 years of hunting with the Walker's and, although many are "common sense", all are very important. Attention to these are paramount. The Slator is also a working cattle ranch. Expect some interruptions from cattle, cattle work, fence building or a gauger driving by .

We anticipate a minimum 2 buck 2 doe per hunter, but our fly-over survey with our biologist will confirm this yearly. You will only get more tags if we have them and your non-trophy qualifies. If you make a mistake you might not get more tags. Your cost for the helicopter survey will be approximately $200.

We mandate early spring to early fall supplemental feeding. Cotton seed and/or protein pellets must be in place by March 1st through Aug.1st continually through that time period, or you forfeit the right to shoot your trophy. If you are not compliant then you forfeit the right to shoot a trophy deer. Once you are notified that you are not compliant you have a week to become compliant. Your trophy must be shot from your blind.

Blind locations must be a minimum half a mile from another hunter. Feeding this area is limited to "tailgating" 400 yards from your blind, so to not interfere with your neighbor. You can put up another blind or tripod within your hunting area BUT it must be no farther than 100 yards from your spot as marked on the map. This will not extend your feeding area because of the additional blind. All blind locations must be accessed by existing roads. Do not create a new road. Blinds must be off all boundary fences by 150 yards. No blind should be next to a cross fence such that if it collapses it will hit the fence or be in the road. Also please stay away from "gap" gates as the Ranch helicopter pilot needs to land in those areas. Stay 30 yards from any Gap and do not put any blind or feeder in a cattle moving lane.

Use caution on rainy days. The Ranch takes offense to ruts left in their properties, so please do not drive off main gravel roads after a rain. It does not take long for roads to dry. Your attention to this is greatly appreciated.

We also ask hunters to respect the hunting times if driving past another hunter's area. Do not drive past another hunter's area between 30 mins before sunrise to 9:00 AM or after 3:30pm to dark. Please do not drive by a blind too late or too early unless the hunter gives permission. Again, safety and respect for you and the other hunter is critical. We all must sign in and out per trip. When you leave the ranch, leave from the camp. Do not go to your hunting area and then leave.

West hunters get one location. Quail, Dove, Duck hunting is limited to your area only. We abide by all Texas Parks and Wildlife laws. If any one of us break any of these laws, I have been warned by the Ranch we ALL can be dismissed. If you do not know your laws for javalina, deer, quail, dove, ducks, Sandhill Cranes, etc., please take the time to learn if you plan to harvest any of these species. We are asked to police ourselves, which means if you are concerned, someone may be breaking guidelines or State Law, please notify Brad or Mitch. Also, no nighttime driving unless coming from your blind or hauling guts. Speed limit on the ranch is 20mph. If you hit livestock, you will pay for the livestock. There is absolutely no night hunting. There is absolutely no subleasing.

A lateral AND head on view picture of the entire deer with the yard stick (in both pics) is required for all harvested bucks BEFORE skinning the deer. Include the whole body in at least one pic. Include the head, neck and shoulders, lying flat on both pics. Post using the GroupMe app before skinning the deer, within the first 2 hours of cleaning the animal. Post the jaw picture with name of hunter, lease member name, score, and age of deer according to video, not what you thought before the shot.

Harvestable bucks.

3.5 year Old 7 point or less

4.5 year Old 8 Point Only if scores less than 115"

5.5 year Old 8, 9, point or less Only if scores less than 125"

6.5 year Old 8,9,10 point Only if Scores less than 135"

7.5 8.5 year Old 7,8,9,10 point Only if Scores less than 135"

7.5 year old Trophy scoring 140" or more

Put another way You can't shoot an 8 or 9 point that scores 125" or more unless it is 6.5 or older.

Any buck scoring 140" or more is your trophy. A 1" point counts as a point. For example, a "Main Frame 8" with 2 kickers is a 10 point, not an 8 point.

There is almost no scenario where we should cull a buck with more than 10 points. You will need permission to harvest a buck with more than 10 points.

There are 5 characteristics that go into a trophy buck.

Tine length, Main beam length, Mass, # of tines, and width.

It is best practice not to harvest a buck the first time you see it. History plays a big role in the approval process. If a deer shows up for the first time it likely means it lives somewhere else and that hunter has chosen not to harvest. Sharing pics with the group is very helpful and encouraged.

Trophy Bucks- All Trophy deer must be approved before harvesting by Brad Jerry and Mitch. Text or Email good pics of the deer to Brad, Jerry, Mitch, If you do not follow the approval process then we have nothing other to go by but teeth. If the teeth show less than 7.5 you will likely be asked to leave the antlers and not return to the ranch. Post approved deer on GroupMe. This allows for anyone with history to chime in. This will help identify bucks others have chosen to let grow because of age.

Please give the deer and the process the respect deserved. Take the time to accurately score and age the deer. No Matter how big or small. We need to remove undesirable genetics from the bottom up, not the top down. You will be limited to only one non trophy 130". No non trophy deer scoring 120" or more may be shot before Nov. 15.

Guest buck fees. No fee for shooting a cull under 120". $250 fee for deer 120"-130". $50 per inch for every inch over 130" plus the $250. Broken tines will be figured into the total score of the buck. No fee for kids under 18, or your spouse for harvesting a management or cull under 130". The fees collected will go to support our hero hunt. Guest bucks need to be scored by Brad, Mitch, Jerry or assigned scorer before the antlers leave the ranch. Mistakes usually involve shooting a buck the first time the hunter sees it and or not studying the buck or getting help to judge the deer's age. You do not get to shoot a buck because he is the biggest buck you have ever seen. You harvest the deer based on our harvestable buck criteria only. Save the entire jaw on all bucks including your Trophy. Put your name and age on the jaw. Any deer that does not meet the above criteria will be confiscated by the biologist or other ranch personnel.

No Loaded weapons in or around camp. This includes pistols. Please leave weapons in your truck, RV or room. Do not drink alcohol and handle firearms.

Trophy Season will not start until after the doe and cull buck criteria have been reached and only after Saturday Nov. 6, if and only if the doe and cull buck criteria are reached. Each hunter is required to do your part for Doe and cull buck harvest. The 2022 MLDP season will start Saturday October 2 .

The ranch is required to shoot 75% of does before anyone shoots a trophy. The ranch is required to shoot 10 cull bucks, 1/1000 acres before anyone shoots a trophy. Cull bucks and doe may be taken starting Oct. 2. Goal is to shoot all Culls before the rut Dec. 10.

Our Season will end Sunday Jan.15, 2023 for ALL deer hunting. We will not have access to the ranch from Jan. 16, through Feb. 6, 2023. . (This could change when TPWD post 22/23 Season)

You and your guest must sign and keep on file a Ranch Hold Harmless Agreement. We start new every year. All questions concerning anything about the lease will be handled by your Ranch Manager or Assistant Ranch manager, Brad and Mitch respectively. If we cannot answer your question immediately, we will get the correct answer for you. Do not go to Mr. XXX or ranch personnel with questions about anything Ranch related. Access to the Ranch must be requested on GroupMe 48 hours before arriving. You need to include first and last name, and address of your guest on GroupMe. We will notify the Ranch. During the off-season it is crucial you request a visit as it is a request, not a notification.

Leave artifacts, plants, etc on the Ranch. Moving of hunting areas must be approved by Brad and Mitch prior to moving your blind. Anytime a deer is wounded, please contact Brad or Mitch. We have a great recovery specialist we can contact. Cost is about $400.

Please review the MLDP tags and learn to fill them out properly. The MLDP harvest log sheet is assigned to each hunter and will be your responsibility to fill out accordingly. It will be kept near the cooler to act as the cooler log as well. Any animal you place in the cooler should be on your MLDP log sheet. Each hunter will have your own folder.

Guest You are allowed one guest other than immediate family. Immediate family does not count as guest. Immediate family is defined as Husband, Wife, Son or daughter less than 25 years old.

Guests are not to drive or hunt by themselves and must always be accompanied by the paid hunter when in the pasture.

We invite every hunter to our Hero Hunt the weekend before Thanksgiving to help with the hunt.. We always have a great meal Saturday evening and ask that you RSVP and bring a drink or dessert. Tags are donated by the Ranch MLD program, so if you have too many cull bucks or borderline trophy in your area(s), let one of our Hero Hunters have a great time and take them on a hunt you guide! We work with Freer Deer Camp in support of deserving veterans. We started doing Hero Hunts in 2010 on the East Slator Ranch.

4 wheelers are not allowed but side by sides ( UTV/ Ranger types) are fine.

We hope all hunters have a great time with us on these remarkable properties; however, if for some reason you decide to leave our lease, the Ranch gives you until April 1st to remove your valuables. Anything not removed by April 1st will be assumed abandoned and will become property of the leasee, Dr. Brad Moving into a vacated area will be by seniority and must be approved before moving. West requires water delivery. The last visit was about $300 to fill the 3k tank. Cost per hunter is approximately $100, payable to Brad , as I will be responsible ultimately for paying or repaying the person who pays for the water.

No fishing the four tanks in the roller chopped area on the N. end of the West Slator. Specifically, Cook and Fredrico.

West Community Blinds - See Map link. These blinds are to be used only by the hunters helping set them up, keeping them fed or donating $. Bill is heading this up.

That just sounds friggin miserable to hunt. I'd be scared to shoot anything on that place. More power to you for getting folks on board...but naw. I hunt for fun, relaxation, putting some meat in the freezer. Horns are a great bonus and I chase them as much as the next guy, but frankly - they are last on the priority list for me.

A few of those rules I agree with and coudl 100% get on board with (blinds away from others, hunting times so as not to disrupt another hunt - we do the same thing) but when your entire goal is to "shoot trophies" - that just ruins the fun of hunting for me personally.

When you make hunting a gottdamned ordeal - whats the point?

Holy crap - just saw the part that if 3 random dudes don't approve a deer and you shoot it, you are supposed to leave the antlers and pack your stuff up and never come back.

If your feeder runs out of protein it seems you have 1 week to get it full or you are non compliant of continuous feeding.

In the email certain words are written red and in highlighted in yellow. That gets lost in reading through the rules as well.

I'm sure they kill big bucks but it is way too overbearing of a rule process with consequences including taking your deer and kicking you off. Essentially you are confined to your blind and getting permission before you pull the trigger. Like walking on egg shells the whole time. I believe in rules and some I can get behind on here but it has gotten way too much. Heck, who wants to volunteer to guide a hunt from your blind when you may tell the person the wrong deer based on 3 guys opinions and get the boot. It's a pretty uptight setting

This is why we do what we do. This boy with Aspergers/Austism was one of our youth hunters.
On 2/12/, Wyatt age 11 attended his first Texas Youth Hunter Program hunt at the East Slator Ranch near Laredo Texas. Wyatt had been hunting before but never deer. I, Wyatt's dad had received a Facebook post about the Texas Youth Hunter's Program hunts and signed Wyatt up. In my mind, I wanted this to be a father/son bonding time, what transpired was truly amazing to say the least. Wyatt is different, (he has social Autism,) certain aspects of social interaction become very challenging in some environments. He has a hard time picking up on social cues and lacks some inborn social skills, such as being able to read others' body language, subtle differences in speech tone or take turns talking. Sometimes Wyatt may not understand a joke or may take a sarcastic comment literally. He also extremely dislikes and cannot handle well changes in his routines. Wyatt and I drove 400 plus miles to the meeting place (the blinking light in the middle of nowhere) meeting up with the other youth hunters and parents. The standout in this experience was the Hunt Master. He was the first of many great volunteers that make the TYHP such a great success. I had talked to Mr. V about Wyatt prior to arriving to the hunt, he assured me that Wyatt would be just fine and that he and the volunteers would make sure of that.
After all was accounted for, we made the 12 mile drive from the "blinking light" to the ranch. As Wyatt and I approach the camp house I took a photo. We were amazed and because we had no idea what to expect. It was exceptionally nice. The hunters were instructed to pick out a room, still being in shock, and humbled we didn't rush to get a room. I told Wyatt to go pick one out upstairs while I looked for one down stairs. Wyatt became overwhelmed with all the unfamiliar people and the fact that all the rooms were taken. I had found a bed downstairs rooming with two other hunters and their dads. Wyatt had
what we call a "meltdown," and it was bad. I text mom needing help, (she's significantly better at this than I am.) Usually I can make do in these situations but this was different and even worse I was unable to reach mom. I start unloading our bags and hunting gear from our truck and notice that Wyatt was nowhere to be found. After looking for him a while (and slightly panicking because I lost my first born,) I found Wyatt curled up on the back porch hiding behind a table crying. Wyatt was having difficulty time acclimating to all the new people and the situation. In his perspective, Wyatt thought that we would have a room to ourselves. Sharing a room with someone usually isn't a big deal but for Wyatt it was too much to handle. I tried calling mom at work, again no luck. The best idea that came to mind was to try and get the other boys that were staying in the same room to help. I talked to the other dad's and explained as best as I could. The dad's told me not to worry, they would take care of it. I did not know what they had in mind, but at this point since I couldn't get in contact with my wife, I was out of options. The boys found Wyatt out in the pasture and tried making conversation. It didn't work. He would not lower his guard. Wyatt was withdrawn, detached and was very standoffish. He then came back to the camp house and very reluctantly ate dinner and proceeded to bed. With time Wyatt was doing a marginally better.
I had a heartfelt conversation with a Texas Youth Hunter Program employee. As I talked about Wyatt's difficulties she divulged that her brother who just started college was just like him. This gave me great comfort. I have always wondered how Wyatt would acclimate in high school much less college. The accomplishments her brother have made reassured me that things will work out.
The next morning, not knowing what to expect, Wyatt and I loaded up with one of our roommates and got off to a good start to the deer
blinds with our guides. We looked and listened for a few hours at doe, javelina and lots of quail.
Then we met back with our roommate who had shot a javelina. At this time the situation started to take a turn for the better. The young shooter asked Wyatt to take a photo with him and the javelina. Wyatt refused several request but at the continual persistence of the other boy he eventually complied. Wyatt knelt down on one side of the javelina and looked up for the photo with the biggest smile from ear to ear, and a lifetime friendship started.
We returned to the Camp house for lunch and ethical hunting instruction by a teen volunteer. I was able to talk to a hunter from the ranch that was just there to help out with the youth hunts, his name is JT. I got to talk about Wyatt and his differences and also the many academic accomplishments Wyatt has to JT. He was a very supportive and kind.
That afternoon Wyatt and I returned to see a few doe (too far to shoot) quail and some more javelina. Since we did not know if the morning hunt was available on the last day and Wyatt did not want to disappoint momma. He shot the javelina. Wyatt really wanted to bring something home. He thought his mom would not be happy if we drove that far and did not bring anything home. (In defense of my wife she could care less if we brought nothing home but dirty clothes. However Wyatt is terribly self-critical.) As the last little bit on sunlight was left Wyatt took aim and shot at a javelina that had been hanging around the corn feeder all afternoon. The javelina ran off into the thorny brush. After 30 minutes of searching *****ly cactus and bushes we located the injured javelina and humanely put it down. Wyatt, with help from another youth hunter lugged the javelina and loaded it up. With the
help of the guide, Wyatt for his first time cleaned, dressed and properly stored the javelina in a large meat cooler.
Returning to the camp house Wyatt was pleased and grateful that he got something to take home. He was even joking around and interacting with the other hunters. Then three Texas Game Wardens stopped by to eat dinner with us. The game wardens talked with the youth hunters about various issues and then answered their questions. Later that same evening I found out that Wyatt would get to hunt one more time before returning home.
The last morning hunt we were not accompanied by a guide. This was a little nerve racking for me because I really did not wanting to shoot something that was off limits by accident. I had serious reservations about being unaided. Wyatt and I put out some corn near the feeder, and climbed into our stand. Just as we got situated a nice buck walked out. I did not think there was any way it would be a cull buck because it was very nice but Wyatt persistent in me finding out. I took a photo with my phone through binoculars and sent it to ranch manager Mitch. Then another bigger buck walked out, I told Wyatt don't let your eyes off the first one. After what seemed like an eternity the reply text came "is this Wyatt?" I replied "yes." His reply "shoot it." I was dumbfounded. Several aspects started running through my mind. What if the deer was not the one they thought it was? What if Wyatt killed some expensive restricted deer? How much would this cost me? ???? Even with reservations I told Wyatt to get ready. He set up his rifle, loaded a round and said "daddy say when." I told him to shoot after the bigger buck moved out of the way. I had the binoculars on the buck and I told Wyatt "whenever you're ready." Boom….. the buck went down with a clean shot. I told Wyatt great job and well done. I text Mitch "done." He replied "is the deer down?" I said "yes good shot." As we waited I asked Wyatt "why did you shot it in front of the
shoulder?" He replied "that is precisely where the hunter's education instructor told us to shoot. That is the "perfect kill shot." Wyatt and I walked out to the buck, both of us could not believe it, it was a really fine buck! I took photos and sent them to Mitch. Wyatt and I loaded the buck and returned to the camp house. Several other hunters did well, one buck, a few doe and some javelinas. We met up with JT and he congratulated Wyatt and commented on how great his buck was. With the assistance of the volunteers and guides, the animals were properly cleaned, skinned and quartered for processing.
All the hunters and volunteers returned to the camp house for a little paper work, packing, cleaning up and lots of proud photos.
I started packing up while Wyatt helped clean up from the processing of the game. Wyatt teamed up with JT. I was loading our supplies into the truck when I noticed Wyatt and JT drive by on an ATV mule. They didn't see me. As they drove by it was apparent that Wyatt was thoroughly enjoying himself, grinning from ear to ear, and it seemed as if JT was appreciating Wyatt's dry sense of humor if the smile on his face was any indication. Wyatt shooting a buck was an awesome experience but even more so was seeing Wyatt interact with JT. It warmed my heart and made me even more thankful for this opportunity that we were blessed with. With a sigh I finished packing since we had a 400 mile drive ahead of us.
We said our thanks to all and stated we hoped to be back. Wyatt and I finished icing down the meat and headed out. We were about 100 miles down the road and Wyatt started talking about a conversation that he had with JT. Wyatt stated that JT told him that he had an awesome dad and that he was very fortunate to have a father that would take their son on hunting trips. I said that was really
nice. Wyatt's hurriedly replied "call JT if you don't believe me, just call him, that's what he said." The conversation continued about numerous other topics that Wyatt had never opened up to me about before (only to his mother.) Afterwards I called JT and thank him again.
About a week later I was at a school function and asked Wyatt's teacher how things were going with Wyatt and if she had seen any change in him. She said "yes, Wyatt was more passionate with his school work and even volunteered to tutor a class mate that he had previously had problems with." She also stated that the manner in which he tutored was just amazing to watch and hear the care in his voice toward the other student. I had also noticed that Wyatt was a little more confident in himself and his abilities.
I talk about Wyatt's social Aspergers/Austism to those whom he comes in contact with in an attempt to help understanding him. In writing this thanks and appreciation letter to the TYHP I thought I might shine a little light on the issue and how this hunt helped a young boy and warm my heart.

"There is almost no scenario where we should cull a buck with more than 10 points. You will need permission to harvest a buck with more than 10 points.".........

So after jumping through all of your hoops, filling feeders, memorizing your "trophy" math/plan, ranch work,
having driven long hours, and lets not even worry about the money.....I mean, forget that part.

I have to listen to dudes that, quite frankly, I have forgotten more than they know......tell me that I can't shoot a 10+pt....when you're trying to grow 10+pt bucks? So maximum on a "trophy" without your permission is a 10pt.......hard pass.

btw.....its not legal to leave antlers and meat if I put my tag on the deer, just because you don't think its big enough. You do not own those deer, unless you are a breeder and the deer is tagged. YOU do not have the authority to confiscate deer.

Again.....go to Texas Bow Hunter/Green Screen......tons of noobs and wannabes there that will blindly follow whatever the most recent thing they're told.

I like the one that says it is not best practice to shoot a deer the first time you see it. If that SOB fits the criteria who cares if someone else decided not to shoot it. Give me a break. If it is that tough of a process to figure out a 7.5 year deer then you might as well have a guide with you or a shooter picture wall in each blind.

Quote:

West requires water delivery. The last visit was about $300 to fill the 3k tank. Cost per hunter is approximately $100, payable to Brad , as I will be responsible ultimately for paying or repaying the person who pays for the water.
1. You are getting hosed on water being brought in.
2. Nice little markup there. $100 per hunter no matter what on a $300 load? Talk about an admin fee.....

It didn't mention what happens if someone wounds their mature buck. Do they come face to face with a firing squad?

Also, is the ranch manager making those rules or the game biologist? Hopefully not the biologist because if so, that guy is a quack. The in-laws own a MLD Level 3 ranch in south Texas that is no where near that strict and they still maintain a herd with a number of 200+ class bucks. I wonder if you are making pointless rules that do little to improve quality of the deer herd.

What's the upcharge if you call Brad at 6:30 AM and wake him up to show him the cell pic of the monster you want to shoot?
