What should I know about an ammonia plant near my house?

Signs went up and looks like a company is getting the TCEQ approval to build a $2.2 Billion facility that produces liquid ammonia from hydrogen they pull from water and nitrogen gas.

How concerned should I be within a mile of this?

That doesn't tell me much but it looks like maybe they are making aqueous instead of anhydrous so that should be safer?

But they will be storing hydrogen somewhere if they are extracting it so there is that.

I'm not sure but the TCEQ application states the facility will emit the following contaminants: anhydrous ammonia, carbon monoxide, hazardous air pollutants, nitrogen oxides, organic compounds, particulate matter including particulate matter with diameters of 10 microns or less and 2.5 microns or less and sulfur dioxide.

That is concerning. Maybe.

Where is this exactly? Nueces County?

With reference to the prevailing wind are you upwind or downwind of the plant?

Yeah, my concern level would go up.

Aren't there already ammonia plants in that area? How close to your neighborhood?

There are a bunch of hydrogen and ammonia plants in the works in that area.

One is being proposed in Ingleside as well. Neighboring county. Wonder if one is an alternate site for the same company.

About 1 mile.

I heard the Ingleside plant was not approved

The Ingleside city council unanimously voted against. After the meeting the company's attorney allegedly stated they're going to get it done with or without the city being on board. Not sure how they plan to do that besides applying political pressure from higher up.

TCEQ is as strong as tissue paper. Especially when the the politicos start calling. Election donations go a long way.

TCEQ is constrained by the fact that their permitting process does not give them the ability to consider political opposition when determining whether to issue a permit. Not necessarily a bad thing in most cases, but sometimes there are facilities proposed that just don't fit their area, and in those cases, there needs to be a way to include that consideration. If you want to stop the permitting process, you are going to need a scientific basis involving some kind of health and safety concern that cannot be overcome with emissions control technology.

we lived close enough to Texas City for a few years that we were always smelling whatever the refineries were releasing.
The ones in Corous released enough so that we had a decent upbringing and got through college. The old man has a few burn scars from it and lost a few people though.

Sounds like some new local taxes are in order.

I work at a chemical plant in environmental. While not desirable, this plant going in nearby will likely have no impact on your health. Of the list of air pollutants, other than ammonia, everything else comes out of your truck exhaust. And, if they are making ammonia, they aren't going to be releasing it. Their ammonia emissions are likely calculated from ldar and probably don't really exist.
If there are already industrial facilities in the area, this new one will be a drop in the bucket and likely safer than the others due to new construction rules and technology. If this were virgin land, it might be worth the fight.
To muddy up the waters, if the operator is a bad seed, there could be issues down the line. Being cheap and not keeping up with maintenance and such will catch up with them. I don't know anything about this place or who owns them and who is going to run it. Maybe they will be great neighbors.

Personally I wouldn't be that worried. It's not nothing, but I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. Maybe I'm a little desensitized from working in refineries and chemical plants for the last 10 years.

Same here. I have managed cryo plants, lean oil plants, treaters, acid gas plants and now a power plant fueled by coal. Totally numb to it all.

Just invest in some good scuba tanks for the entire family, if a cloud of ammonia gas is released when they pop a high pressure RSV on a storage vessel just put on the scuba gear high tail it out of their
