Getting close to purchasing one and looking into the various accessories, what to get, what to stay away from, etc. Also want to see if the best product and price will come from the dealer or an aftermarket website.

Will probably get a Pro-FXT-1000 either LE Black, LE Camo or LE Ranch. That's the 2 row that can seat 3 or 6 people depending on bed configuration. Main advantage I see with the Ranch is the self leveling rear suspension.

I'm most interested in a windshield. I've read in the past different opinions on plastic vs glass. Also on vented vs non-vented. I think the vented windshields help keep the dust from swirling as much. There are a ton of options and significant price differences between them all.

Another consideration would be a rear wind jammer to help with dust, and a lesser consideration would be full side enclosures (i.e. top half of the doors) although if it's raining I'd either not be out in it or I'd at least have the roof and windshield already. Again, tons of different brands and options out there if anyone has recommendations on what works for them vs what to stay away from.

Has anyone ever installed a hand winch or come along to the rack on the back of the cab to assist with pulling a heavy animal or load from the ground up into the bed?

Thanks,

I don't have a mule but do have a ranger and accessories are similar.

Regarding windshield - I would strongly encourage one with vents and glass, if available. I have a poly with vents and it's great; however it's a PITA to clean (not as easy as glass). If you don't get one with vents, pony up for a back windshield.

You also need to consider transporting without the windshield on the Mule. My Ranger gains about 2,000lbs when I have the windshield on… I'm not really joking - it drops 1.5-2mpg with the windshield on. My neighbor had same thing happen to his and was asking me the other day about it.

Look into SC1 spray wax and use it on your UTV. It really helps keep the dust, dirt, and mud from sticking on it. It's nice when you've driven through duck ponds and you only need a garden hose with a little pressure to get all of the mud off. It also shines it up nicely!

If you're looking for a place to order stuff, I have used superatv.com. I have their bolt on winch and so do a few buddies of mine. Zero complaints thus far. Not sure about mounting winch on the back but I know a place I went in CO had headache racks built and a winch at the top to load elk. Very cool design but not sure I would attach a winch to a standard metal roof without serious reinforcement.

Speaking of which, have you decided on a roof? Ranch armor makes good ones and so does big country. I have the big country on mine. It's aluminum and has been very durable. I'm not a fan of poly roofs but they have their purpose.

Good luck!

My ranger has a 2" lift and it's difficult to load a buck by yourself. I bought a hoist that slides into the receiver hitch. It's made by HME. "HME game hoist"
Also, I had a front glass windshield that doesn't tilt open. Wouldn't recommend.

Roof and Windshield would be my first adds. I would not overthink it to much other than making sure it fits.

Have a roof and windshield on both my mule and polaris. We used to remove the windshields in the summer for additional air flow, but found it easier to just leave them on. We do not need to haul them, so makes life much easier.

polaris has a winch that I never use and the I have a spare winch for the mule still in the box.

we mounted a little warn winch directly to the bed that we use for loading animals. we tilt the bed and it drags them right up. it would probably be better if it were mounted to the roof but we were limited on parking clearance and it seems to work just fine as is.

next time i get a break i will head out back and snap a pick of it.

Edit to add the pics and point out that our mule is 24 years old and you might be wanting a less redneck system.

I've had a mule for a couple years now. The vented windshield didn't seem to help a whole lot. I recently lost it when towing it back from San Antonio to Bryan (apparently it's not rated to resist winds when pulling it 90mph on the toll road). When I replace it, I'm going with either a flip up glass front window or one that folds in half. My main complaint on the mule is how hot it gets in the front seat in the summer. The heat really radiates up from the coolers up front and engine in the back. A window that folds in half seems to be the best thing to offset that. You can also buy an adapter for the front radiator cover that allows more air flow that apparently helps this as well. I'm going to see about purchasing one of those this spring before it gets too hot.

I guess I've just never understood the "buy a SxS, then do everything possible - at more expense - to try to turn it into a jeep" mentality.

I have a '19 PRO-FXT with the 820 engine, here are the things I've done to it and comments:

  • Lift - mine didn't come with a lift from the factory like yours, so non issue for you
  • Roof - I went with the plastic Kawi roof. Don't make the same mistake I did, the roof sucks. Yes, it's a roof and it does provide the function of being a roof, but the design is horrible. I wish I had paid the extra $250 for the metal secondary brand the dealer offered. Get a good metal roof, one with a good overhang on the front. Trust me, when it rains, you'll be so much happier.
  • Hood scoop - one of, if not the, best additions. Lets cold air in and keeps the air flowing through the bottom of the cab cool. Prior to that it was no bueno driving with sandals on in the summer. It's cheap and takes about 8 minutes to install. Get one.
  • Front brush guard - makes installing a light bar easier, took about 10 minutes to install.
  • Front LED light bar - definitely worth it
  • Front LED light pods - my model didn't come with the second high beam headlights, so eventually I added them. Tapped them into the high beam circuit and its nice having them available.
  • LED light bulbs- upgraded the factory halogens to LED's, easy and well worth it. I think your model will come with LED's already (not sure on that)
  • Interior dome light - I spent $12 on a green kayak light from Academy and a rocker switch
  • Front winch - absolute must
  • Rear winch in the bed/headche rack - a true Godsend when you are trying to load a deer or pig into the bed with no help
  • Windshield - started with a Kawi "half" windshield, which I regret buying. Now have a Koplin fold up half windshield and it's pretty good. At some poing I plan on going with a Super ATV flip forward model though that is a full windshield, but it's low priority. Poly is just fine, have had mine since I bought the rig and it's still clear as day. Use the ceramic wax and it keeps it clean and clear. Only issue I've had with the poly windshield was user error, wherein I was an absolute dumbass and didn't set it up properly for towing and when I hit 75-80 going down the highway it cracked one corner of it. 100% my fault.
  • Underseat storage - one of the best additions, easy to do and cheap. Don't buy the Kawasaki branded one unless you just want to spend money.
  • Swapped the cables on the front seat for a piano hinge - unecessary, but makes accessing the storage much easier
  • Fender flares - I fabbed some up and added them to help with mud from my actual mud tires. Should have patented them, because shortly after I did it and posted them on one of the Mule pages, at least one manufacturer magically came up with nearly the same idea.
  • Rear light pods - great for having light in the bed at night, easy and cheap
  • Front 2" reciever - one of the things that always irked me is that the Mules never had a good front anchor point for winching out or tying down on a trailer. So I made one, it's nice to ahve. I can also add a front cargo basket now, which is really nice to carry an ice chest around during the summer without taking up bed space. I plan on making it to where I can hook up my road feeder to the front as well, but for now it works just fine on the rear.
  • CV joint protectors - if you are going in areas with brush, sticks, etc. they are worth it. I got mine after replacing a couple of boots because they were punctured. But depending on terrain, not always necessary.

I would not recommend the full cab enclosure, rear windshield, etc. Guess I just don't see the point of it - it's a side by side, not a jeep. Heater, air conditioning, etc. aren't part of the package IMO and i wouldn't want all that crap anyway. The dust issue I hear about, I've never experienced so I just don't get it.

If you're going to be wiring the accessories yourself, I'd highly recommend using these (unless you're planning to hand solder all of the connections):

https://a.co/d/e0efKBv

Super easy to use and solders and seals the connections with a heat gun. I've wired a bunch of stuff on my Ranger (lights, light bars, sound bars, subs, and more) with these and won't do it another way.

One more thing - my dealer offered me a fuse block addition when they wired in the winch for me. It's a block that is accessible under the hood that is already connected to the battery. Something like this:

Fuse Block

I think they charged me about $40. Holy hell, get one. Makes adding electrical accessories a breeze because you don't have to mess with trying to fish wire to the battery.

Thanks. It looks like these new Mules come standard with a roof, so I guess I'll try out the factory one for awhile. In the short term, I don't see myself trailering it often or long distances.

Second on the hood scoop. Also, look into the Hester's mule fuse block. You have to call them to order it but it's a nicer clean install. I also got a front basket that sits just behind the windshield from Ranch Armor. The Mule lacks convenient storage space.

Sorry, had the manufacturer wrong. It's Eagle MTX. Fits right behind the windshield so easy access in the cab.

One of the best additions that I have not seen mentioned that I have is strap that connects to my roll bar for tool storage. It is nice to have a few screwdrivers and pliers handy.

Interesting, haven't seen anything like that.

I keep a fencing tool, electrician's pliers and needle nosed pliers in my glove box. Those are the tools I grab 95% of the time. My under seat storage holds all of the other crap that I don't use nearly as much but keep on the buggy.

I looked hard at those for a while, but kept thinking it would annoy me being in front like that. Like the concept though, and have wondered if it woudl be sturdy enough to be a solid rifle rest.

Would this work if the windshield opens and has the handle on the inside? Trying to figure out how high it sits on the inside.

It's sturdy enough for it but it's pretty low. I'd guess maybe 6 inches above where the roll cage bolts together. I mounted a shooting bar with a couple light mounts on the roll cage and an aluminum bar between them. Cover it with pipe insulation to protect the gun. Photo of my setup is below along with the light mounts I used.

Dad has one similar to that. Good place to keep a pair of gloves , some cheap binoculars, and some extra 22 ammo, plus some pliers and wirecutters.

As for a roof/top, I really like my metal top. Can't tell you how many times I've stood on it to mess with a feeder, a deer stand, etc. Not really an option with a flimsy plastic one…

Eaglemtx roof. Skip the expensive mule box under the seat and get you a cheap Plano from academy and installl for storage. Window was from the dealer. Opens to vent or opens fully.

Kept mine simple since I mostly work out of it.
Custom features include a piece of 4" PVC pipe cable-tied to rollover bar for hauling shovels.

Also got a gun rack & a "goat ropers need love too " bumper sticker.

Haven't felt we needed a windshield, at least not how we used it.

I don't have a windshield on mine either. I don't think it's necessary.

Just got a new Ranger and didn't think I needed a windshield. My daughter wanted to drive it around this morning and I was really wishing that I had one.

A windshield that you easily take off is the way to go, in my experience/opinion. Even if it's only 65 degrees out, running around with no windshield gets chilly unless you're just paw pawing it at 3mph.
