We went in December 2019. Stayed at the Blue Tang Inn in San Pedro and spent a lot of time at Palapa Bar and Grill right out front when we weren't fishing. Not a nice motel by any means, but it was right on the water and just fine for three guys that didn't spend much time in it.

Fished with Omar's Freelance Fishing and another guy I can't remember. Caught plenty of bonefish, and my buddies each got a permit.

I went w a group put together through Tailwaters in august of last year.

What kind of a trip and lodging are you looking for? Resort w wife/kids on the trip, or serious fishing without having to worry about lodging?

I had an excellent trip, outstanding food, comfortable but not luxurious lodging, but definitely not a wife and kids trip. Caught my first permit and bonefish. Trip of a lifetime. We fished 5 days.

Edit to add - the same group is going again in August. I can put you in touch w the coordinator. My buddy and I aren't going this year.

I can recommend some guides.

Depending on what days you're looking at and if you are okay going to your own restaurants and packing your own cooler, my place may be available.

It's a 1/1 shack with a/c on the lagoon. Priced right and will leave plenty of budget for restaurants, bars, golf cart, etc. Email me if you're interested in learning more. Always looking for good Ags who like fly fishing and want to support Belize.

As far as time of year, it's one of the best times to get a slam with a tarpon of decent size. That said, you're always gambling with weather in the summer. Tropical summer storms + potential of tropical activity in general. Still one of my favorite times to be down there though. Belize has less tourists then and it's lobster season.

I am here now and will be fishing with Alex Gomez out of Bluebonefish tomorrow. Fished with him last summer and had a blast. Will let you know how we do.

Haha that's awesome!

We've had a packed February. Probably too packed to be honest. I like keeping it rented to keep linens/towels turned over, and the a/c running. But trying to space rentals out a little more in the future.

For anyone wanting to look at photos it's poonshackbelize on IG.

Planning a trip for my dad and me. Will probably want something nicer on the lodging side. What guides or guide services are the best? Probably only have time to fish 2-3 days.

July is a good month and actually not as hot as April and May in Belize

If you are going to stay at a lodge in the north, San Pedro, then El Pescador has the best guides. You also could stay at a non fishing resort and book some good guides on your own and save some money while fishing the same places. Texican08 or I can put you in touch with them. San Pedro is pretty busy and developed now but has great restaurants, things to do and good fishing fairly close.

If you want to be on a secluded island that only has other guests and staff on it and wade fish some
nice flats right outside your room when you aren't on a guide trip and have the best chance at a Permit , then Blue Horizon is who you should look at.

Edit: 87flyfisher replied at the same time. I will always defer to his recommendations.

If you're wanting nicer accommodations and a lodge style atmosphere, I would recommend El Pescador, Blue Bonefish, or staying at Victoria House and booking a guide through them if staying in San Pedro. Talk to them, give them y'all's skills and what you hope to achievethey can pair you with a good guide.

If you're interested in all permit, Copal Tree Lodge has incredible accommodations out of Punta Gorda. To the point where it's incredible, breathtakingbut really doesn't feel like a fly fishing lodge at all. Which may not be for everyone.

As Texican08 said Blue Bonefish is another good choice on San Pedro with good guides. I didn't list them because they used to close in July, but now I see they close in August and September.

Note that El Pescador is starting some really big changes including a long overdue remodel so things may not be as settled or peaceful there for awhile.

i can tell you from experience who not to use and that's Tres Pescados. Their guides weren't helpful, seemed annoyed the whole time and didn't seem to care if we got on the fish.

Will, the owner, is a big face man for costa and a bunch of other products and that's about all i'll say about him. He likes him some him.

I've fished with Pescador twice and had a great time.

I've also heard that Victoria House has some great guides but i've never used them.

Good recs so far, but I'd throw another sleeper in there that I think you should strongly consider. Garbutts lodge out of PG (Punta Gorda). Family owned and operated, they have the only boat launch in PG. the guests that stay at the luxury eco-tourist lodge Copal up in the mountains actually drive down and launch out of Garbutts marina. They often fish Garbutts guides and boats.

I'd suggest staying w the Garbutts though. The Garbutts family are a group of brothers, legendary guides who have been doing it right for decades since a group of Orvis guys came down and introduced fly fishing and guiding as a business to this small fishing village. Scully is their most senior and well known guide, but only the Garbutts brothers and extended family guide for them. It's a close knit family operation and it's really cool. You stay in nice accommodations right on the water. They cook homestyle for you every day. Rooms are good but nothing luxurious. Clean, soft beds, ac in each room, small fridge, decent shower. That's pretty much all you need.

You would fly to belize city and take a local flight to PG. they pick you up right at the airstrip, take you to the lodge, and take care of everything. Got my first bonefish and permit on the fly with them. Would highly recommend.

87Flyfisher is underselling his post here. He used to run El Pescador, I'd listen to anything and everything he has to say about this visit!

Agree with the poster above about Tres Pescados…. Just don't, been there and done that.

Had a good trip out of Grand Caribe on Wednesday. The wind kicked up but caught a bunch of bonefish. Alex (who 87 put me on) picked me up at the dock and we had a great day. Chris with Blue Bonefish (where Alex works out of) is great to work with as well. I will be back in July and do it again. Only regret is that it's not sooner!

Best advice for Placencia is keep watch at all times for elderly Americans and Canadians driving a golf cart like a Bat outta Hell and don't say anything bad about Francis Ford Coppola movies where anyone can hear you.

I've fished out of Placencia several times. Tarpon Caye Lodge is a good outfit and well run by Melvin from E. Texas. Staff will pick you up at the Placencia airport, shuttle to the dock, and take a 40 minute boat ride to the island. Lots of bonefish, Tarpon, and permit. A great experience! Going back for my 5th trip in late April.

Doing a last minute trip with my 13 year old son, would appreciate any additional lodge recs or info in addition to the above. Preferably a spot where we can also dock fish after hours. Thanks!

I would go with El Pescador. Great location and suited for a father/son combo. Belize River Lodge I've heard is nice and convenient to the airportfocused on river tarpon.

A lot of options if you want to stay outside of a lodge, fish during the day and dock walk at night. But if it's yalls first trip to BZ a lodge set up may be best.

Reading above it sounds like Blue Bonefish is a good option if I'm staying on San Pedro at a resort. Quick question for those that have done it, can I book a day trip that leaves from San Pedro? I'll be there in late March with my family and looking to peel away by myself for a day.

Also, I plan on bringing a 9wt. Think that will be all I need or should I bring a 7 or or 8 as well?

Blue Bonefish is a good choice if you are staying in town. Alex Gomez is a friend of mine and a third generation San Pedrano fly fishing guide who works there.

The 7 weight would be the best choice for Bonefish if the reel is up to it. 9 is preferred for Permit, Snook and baby Tarpon. Most guides/outfitters are going to have rods available if you need a 10wt or larger.
