My oldest is wanting to take a deer this year with his bow. He's been competing for a few years and I'm confident he can make a good shot inside of 20 yards. He's only pulling back 40 lbs with a ke on his arrow of 23 which feels light even for scrawny texas does. What would yall use for a minimum ke on texas white tail

I'd agree that 23# seems light. I'd think high 20's to low 30's would be the bottom end.

Could mitigate somewhat with a heavier arrow and fixed blade cut on contact broadhead. Even then, I'd want shots closer to 10 yards.

What is his setup (bow model, draw length, arrow model)?

Also, are you sure that KE is correct? That's only moving 260 grains 200 fps, which seems slow even for 40#

What grain head? Try the wasp sharpshooter steel 150 grn. Small heavy cut on contact designed for Trad.

He's shooting a mission radik that's maxed out. The only thing I can do is increase his draw length, but I'm not sure how much I can add. Maaaaaybe another half inch

Better momentum though which is more important than KE. Id set him up with 150s and the feeder at 12-13 yards and a single pin.

Are you sure your numbers are right? My daughter is only pulling 32lbs and is shooting 426 grains at 150fps.

She's not hunting yet because her consistency isn't quite there.

Is she tall for her age? Draw length lends itself to speed as much as weight

I'd go heavier broadhead. he's not shooting far. give him some mass to push through.

also, get a fixed blade broadhead that you can sharpen and a leather strop. get those blades as sharp as possible.
