This is probably going to open up a can of worms, but I figure there might be some helpful responses.

Looking to buy some land out in the Leakey / Concan area. If we wanted to get a big enough place to do a little hunting (deer, dove, quail, etc.), how big does that place need to be? Is 50 acres too small?

I realize we could "hunt" on any parcel of land, but just wondering the board's thoughts on what size is the right starting point.

This is the OB. Anything less than about 20 sections is a ranchette and not nearly enough to really hunt on unless you high fence it and go canned hunting.

Real answer: buy all you can afford and make it yours. Dont worry about what internet message board King Ranch wannabes really dont matter.

50 acres is more than enough if all you plan to do is shoot a deer or 2 a year and make memories with family. Put a blind on one side and shoot to the middle.

Putting a blind anywhere within 1 mile of a fenceline makes you a terrible neighbor and a horrible person in general. /OB

Good advice here so far, especially buy as much as you can afford. You may want to scratch quail from your list though. Primarily deer, hogs, maybe turkey and exotics.

Temper your expectations on a smaller property, especially if your neighbors own similar-sized properties and hunt as well.

Someone musta got their Cheerios peed on this morning..

Central TX (B-CS area), have/live on 60 acres, rectangular in shape, about 25 acres homesite/ pasture, 35 acres woods. Hard to imagine much more than 1, maybe 2 blinds, deer readily travel across the property, neighbors don't hunt.
Dove definitely don't hang around, likely due to having improved (Jiggs Bermuda) pasture.
Big enough when I go to "the back", I feel kinda remote.
But having my own 300yd shooting range makes it all good!
Edited to add: damn hogs do come through often enough, I have to stay diligent for damage control.

A lot also depends on topography
If it's 50 acres where you can be shooting down without worry of bullet crossing property boundary then it works

Or archery hunt.

Whatever you start to explore I'm sure certain neighbors of yours would be willing to help scout and some work for a hunt here and there!

Deer- 50 acres works well if there's not much pressure around you. 50 acres does not work well if the other properties around you are all 50 acres and they all have two hunters on them. Dove it really doesn't matter as long as you have water.

Either way, buy as much as you can afford. You'll always regret not buying more. Good luck and just incase you didn't know or have doubts, this is a good thing!

Old thread bump here…OP did you end up moving forward with this? Thinking about something similar around Leakey myself. If you did, how is it working out? Does anyone know if there are a decent amount of axis in the area? Thank you

Nothing our end yet. Lots of looking, but can't agree on what/where we want. However, the advice to buy as much as you can afford rings loud and true. Folks are really proud of their property right now!

Quite a bit of low fence axis being trapped and sold to high fence landowners in the Hill Country.
