How do you buy axis deer?

I am in the process of buying a hill country property that is high fenced. The property has not been hunted since 21 and there is a relatively small native whitetail population and a few axis. Given the current population density, I assume the prior owners essentially shot the place out on their way out the door to foreclosure.

I have decided to leave the fence up for the time being and begin the process of nurturing this place back to life. I would like to start by introducing some axis deer and possibly blackbuck. However, I have never owned a high fenced place nor have I ever had reason to buy and/or transport exotic critters. If anyone on this forum might have any experience in that regard, I am certainly in need of help figuring this out. Any recommended breeders would be welcome also.

A slightly different question, but I have heard that axis tend to be… well, prolific breeders. If anyone has any helpful advice for managing these critters once they are on the ground, that would be great.

A .270 should work well for population management

I can help you with high quality hoof stock....of any flavor. Delivered....or you can pick up. But sounds like you need delivered.

Consider red stags and fallow as well. Stags have more meat just as good and fallow are just easy and more dramatic antlers. Be careful with blackbuck......they can get aggressive and kill each other.

I do not have a ranch but constantly dream of owning one and having a similar problem to this.

My first call would be to a trapper and let him know what you're looking for. You might be able to save some money if you can connect with a guy, I have at least one guys number, that is trapping and willing to sell to you direct. I see traps all the freaking time now in the hill country and I blame them for the primary decrease in numbers of free range axis, followed closely by the freeze.

My second would be to the YO/Exotic Livestock auction. They have it a couple of times a year and know people used to get a lot of animals there. I believe there is also one in Huntsville a few times of year too.

Not sure if this helps but wish you luck!

Well congrats on getting your place. I kinda started out just like you. I will first caution you that exotic animal dealers are very akin to horse traders. Many are unscrupulous and just want to sell you something. I learned the hard way. After many years of getting lied to and taken advantage of I ended dealing with one man on all my needs. Chris Atkinson in Bandera. He is an Aggie grad with a WFS degree and is honest and fair as is out there. He knows animals… won't sell you junk and stands behind what he sells. He has been in the business for almost 30 years. Owns and flies his own helicopters and does his own capture and hauling. Tell him you are a fellow Aggie and he will help you. He is a wealth of knowledge and will guide you the right way. His Email is sdexotics@starband.net
Cell: two one 0 three 1 seven nine 6 three 0
He only sells quality healthy animals.

Start small. Axis breed once a year. They are no more prolific than any other Cervidae. But they go into rut and heat on their birthdays. Axis do not all go into rut at the same time of year like most other cervidae. Some bucks may be in hard horns, velvet and shed of horns all at the same time. Does come into heat all at different times. This causes great herd diversity and is a good thing. I would start out by getting you one middle age buck, and one young 1 yr-2yr old buck and 4 -5 does. Let the bucks grow to maturity. Keep track of your herd and buck to doe ratio.
You don't need to keep axis at 1:1 buck/doe ratio like whitetail. It's better to have more does than bucks.

Red deer, Elk, Sika, all have been CWD positive. If you buy any of them you will have to keep your herds CWD certified and buy from CWD certified herds only.

There are many cool animals that you can get and not have to worry about CWD. Any of the African hoofstock like Addax, Scimitar oryx, Gemsbock, Waterbuck, Lechwe etc. are money makers. And you can just start with a breeding pair of them…….you don't need to buy a herd.

Blackbuck are one of my favorites. They have more individual character than any other exotic imho. They will breed twice a year….yes that are prolific….so i suggest start with a small herd and then keep check on the females.
Start with one mature male and a one young male that's maybe 1or 2 years old. No older.
It will be a number of years (3-4) before the young guy will challenge your older male. By then sell or hunt your mature trophy male and let the young male get mature. Keep stair stepping your males like that in years.
Mature blackbucks are territorial but will rarely fight to the death. If you manage your herd to keep only one or two mature males and then stair stepping in age your other males it will minimize their territorial dominance.
Start with 3-4 females. The older male will control them as his "harem". Don't let your females get out of hand in numbers. Kill off the does as needed to keep from over populating and leave the young males. They eat good.

Fallow deer are the hardest to get to true trophy size imho. They are extremely aggressive during rut and mature males will often fight to the death. About the only way I found to raise big fallows was to have no females ….period.
What you can do is just, from time to time, buy new young males to replenish your herd and let them grow up to maturity.. hunt them or sell them as trophies and then buy more young males to replace. Does will cause them to fight. They go into rut and heat once a year like most cervidae.
Fallow come in three basic colors….chocolate, spotted and white. The bucks determine the color in breeding.

I recommend not buying anything from animal auctions. Those animals are usually somebody else's junk that can be diseased or in poor health. I'm telling you this from 30 years of my experience. Auction animals are somebody else's surplus. You have no idea what you are really getting. You have no health guarantees. If you should bring in a deer or animal with a disease it can infect your entire herd. I just don't recommend buying from animal brokers or auctions. I learned the hard way and it cost me a lot of $$$$.
SGrem on this board raises and sells very high end quality Fallow deer I'm told. He is knowledgeable and has a good reputation.

This is just info I recommend…..and my opinions. I made lots of mistakes starting out. Hopefully what I learned in my mistakes can help you in some way. I'm not saying my recommendations are the best or only way by any means……but they have worked for me. There are lots of guys here on the OB that have tremendous knowledge that will help you.

Hope this gives you a start. Feel free to PM me if you got any questions or just to talk for another input. Happy to help all I can.

ETA. For additional content and my bad grammar and spelling.

Strong info right there. Thanks for taking us on this ride!

Just an FYI I raise red stags and fallow for hoofstock. As in my land and my animals. If you decide you want some.

My first call would not be any kind of deer breeder. My first call would be to a fence guy. No telling what kind of shape the fences are in and they are kinda important for this type of operation.

Here are three great reference books on exotics.
The two from the Kleberg Studies was published by Texas A&M. You can get them from the Exotic Wildlife Association in Kerrville.
Exotics on the Range is invaluable. Covers all exotics..Cervidae and African/India hoof stock. It was published by TAMU press.

The ranch has to have a release site and LID number to have CWD susceptible animals on the premises. When they're harvested they have to be reported through TAHC. Pending where the ranch is a certain number of CWD tests have to be done on harvested animals. Estimated inventory also has to be kept and updated yearly. It's basically the same thing for breeders, but you have to test any deathloss.

We don't run any hunts. We only raise the animals for the lodges.

Got it. Thanks my friend.
I wondered what protocol was in place now.
Years back I had a dealer owner ( You know him) that raised some really nice typical antlered genetics whitetails. I helped him out of a serious inventory crisis and as a thank you he offered me 12 bred does out of various bucks he had. He was going to take care of everything and even deliver them and no cost to me.
When I met with our biologist about it she recommended I not do it. In retrospect, and with all that has changed with CWD, I am glad I listened to her then. Especially upon selling the place.

I live outside Bandera and there has been quite a bit of chatter online from folks seeing less and less axis over the last few years on there properties. Several that had good size herds and now just see one here and there. Assume the freeze a few years back got some, but there was mention of the number of traps out and just how many are being sold. One guy said he knew someone that ran right of ways for the coop and knew of at least 15-20 traps between bandera and tarpley. Said just as many from bandera towards Lakehills. I guess they must fetch a pretty penny. We used to have a small herd in our neighborhood but haven't seen them in years. I assumed was just because the Medina was dry and water hard to come by.

Gunny-

Out of curiosity, which exotic animals of those you mentioned compete the least with whitetail for browse?

More people, properties being divided smaller and smaller, more hunting pressure, lower quality environment and a lot of cold winters relative to normal in the Hill Country the last decade.

I know a guy that grossed $100k in about a year and half on a small place near Bandera trapping exotics. He netted almost $50k after splitting with trapper... from what I understand, prices have started to decrease on some of the exotics hit hard by the freeze but for a while I think axis does were going for damn near $1k.

I don't blame people for trapping and putting money in their pockets but it really sucks when you're nearby and a trapper can wipe out 40-50 animals in a short amount of time.

The price of live Axis does and young bucks has gone up well over 300% in the last five years. You used to be able to purchase live Axis does for $250 - $300. Young 1-2 year old bucks for $500.
Not anymore.
If people would have taken care of their Axis and other exotics properly during the big freeze they would not have had the mortality. Lots of folks ignorant of what to do. Ranches that did it right lost few animals.

Grazers. Like blackbuck, and almost all of the African antelope species. Addax, Gemsbock, Scimitars, Waterbuck, Lechwe, Gazelles,,etc. they basically graze grass like cows….little browse or forbes. They actually can benefit the range for WT's by keeping grasses in check.
Axis can do well both ways. They can do well on browse and forbes…. but when depleted they can switch to grass's and do fine….unlike WT's.
Fallow are goats with antlers. They will eat tin cans if need be.

Super Exotics like Eland, Kudu and Sable are grazers as well as they are all antelopes. It's really hard to keep them though as they are really tender to cold. To have them you gotta build shelters for them and feed hot feeds during the winter for them to make it.

Everyone gets gugu over axis and yes it is great eating....

Just as good as nearly everything Gunny mentioned.... most of the others are bigger and cheaper.

Don't forget zebra. Excellent eating.

Average pricing live sales. Approximate:
Yearlings -$3000
Females-$4000
Average length males -$4200
Larger - $4500 -$5000

This is average. Also figuring in loading and hauling.
Seems to be a ball park on the market….. may find some cheaper…depends on the ranch and quality.
