Advice needed please. I've always rifle hunted but I'm taking my brother in law up on an invite to start archery elk hunting with him.

I've never even looked into archery set ups. I'm looking for any tips the OB has on where to start when finding a bow/setup that's going to work for me.

I'm in kingwood and am also looking for recs on a good archery shop to go visit.

Thanks in advance!

Don't need one archery shop near you. Find every shop within 100 miles and go shoot the top bows they offer.

I did the same as you years ago asking for recommendations. There was two common winners everyone recommended.... i went to buy and shot them and absolutely hated them. Felt ridiculous in my hand and loud as a 22....

So i did as i suggested above and went to every shop to shoot their top offerings keeping my lead choice in mind till I had shot them all.

"I want to get into archery hunting big game recommend a bow to me" is the same as "I want to get into boating recommend a boat to me".

Pretty much any modern bow shooting a fixed blade and a >475g arrow will get her done. Go find one you think is cool and build a good arrow.

Totally agree with this. Get a 3 or 5 pin sight with a slider and a rangefinder and practice, practice, practice. Especially those ranges between your pins so you know how to gap them.

Register for one of the TAC events to get some experience on 3d targets in the woods.

Don't feel like you have to have an elk exclusive bow setup. I have used my whitetail bow for elk with great results. Have killed all of my bulls (5) with a 100gr expandable broadhead....same one I shoot whitetails with.

Texas Archery in spring isnt far. I bought my bow from them a few years ago.

Texas Archery 100%.
Get some lessons, try some bows , get your set up tuned , and PRACTICE !

As far as bow set up: get whatever feels best and most repeatable for you.

As far as arrows:
Most people will favor heavier arrows 500gr and up with more FOC and a well tuned fixed blade broadhead like iron will, slick trick, g5 etc etc.

Are you riding horses in?

Carrying a bow on a horse is a challenge in itself. I am going to a shorter ATA just for that reason.

If you are, there are several methods. Tie to back pack, sling, bow spider, etc. Ideally you get to test at home. If no horses available find a trail ride outfit call them and ask them if you can test some gear, then take the whole family and make an outing of it.

Once you get a set up, practice multiple scenarios. Long hold times, to fast draw & release, Heart Rates over 120, multiple shots at multiple distances, the smallest of windows to shoot through to target.

Welcome to the party.
