Anyone have a lead on a West Texas Aoudad hunt? Prefer to DIY on a large ranch if at all possible. Lots of good recommendations for West Texas Hunt Organization (https://www.westtexashunt.com/), not sure what else is out there. Won't make it up to my annual Colorado elk/mule deer hunting trip so hoping this will scratch the itch.

It's wild how popular and expensive these Aoudad hunts have become.
Yeah they all seem north of $5.5-6k now for free range west Texas. Hate these damn things… shoot them all.
back in the 90's, they actually had a season and no one hunted them.
I used to work with a guy that guides and has access to a few ranches out there. They shoot some pretty nice ones out there.

I'd rather do it total DIY. Got a camper or even tent depending on time of year. Prefer unguided if that's an option.

Check in SW Texas. Devil's and Pecos River country. Great sheep and not as pricey as the true west Texas mountain hunts. Still rough, canyon country and hills but not in the mountains.
Wiling to pay 2500. Anymore is ridiculous for what is basically a pest. If anyone knows of something in that range I am in.
I don't disagree but it's not about what you or I think - it's about what the market commands. I don't think there are many hunts in that range anymore.
Check out texicanoutdoors on instagram. Have some monster sheep on the ranch he hunts on. Gorgeous country along the pecos river. Don't think he does any DIY but worth a call.
I get it, but this is the way I see it. I'm hunting nilgai on king ranch for 3250. Famous ranch and actually good tasting meat. So I value a bull nilgai at 3250 tops, can't pay more than 2500 for a goat that doesn't taste great. That's my thinking at least but I know people pay 6k every day.
Aoudad is not edible and I wish that really wasn't the case. I've shot more aoudad in the last 7-8 years than most people will probably even see alive in their life. They're still really cool animals and big 30" rams with full chaps make awesome looking mounts! But if you're trying to grow big deer and protein feeding, Aoudad are your worst enemy.
I heard they were bad but didn't know they were not edible. Not good, even more reason to not pay 6-7k for one. I enjoy eating everything I kill and if it's that bad nevermind.
I was being a little facetious. It's edible but you have to do a lot to make it that way.

$3250 tops for a bull nilgai hunt on the KR? I'd do that over a paid aoudad hunt anywhere. Any day of the week and twice on Sundays.
There's no comparison between a nilgai and aoudad hunt. Aoudad hunting out west is extremely challenging in very difficult terrain. That's why they call it poor man's bighorn. It's not about the meat, it's about the experience.

Your best bet may be to join all the Aoudad/barbary hunting Facebook groups. There's a few. Reach out to the reputable outfitters and discuss your price range for diy.
Another possibility is wait for a cancellation hunt, but it will be last minute and prob still not in your price range.

Southwest of Artesia. Basically on the line between gmu 29/30. Guadalupe rim off in the distance.
If you draw a hunt let me know and I'll give you exact coordinates. Very low density area though. You can see hundreds in a day on some of those ranches in west Texas. Out here you could go weeks without laying eyes on one.

Isn't there OTC aoudad tags in NM? Are certain units draw only?

What I've read is you get the experience of a bighorn hunt at less than a tenth of the cost. Some people have zero interest in the alternatives being mentioned because they want a different experience.

I believe you're correct. There are some otc areas. This area is draw only though.
