Headed up to the hill country next weekend and have the opportunity to buy a Blackbuck hunt while there with my father in law on his Oryx hunt. I know nothing about exotics, and the ranch manager threw out a $3000 price tag.

For 3K, I'm assuming that would be for a "trophy"?

What constitutes a "trophy" Blackbuck OB?

18" or longer is generally a trophy

Length is one thing but the tighter the curls the better. Gunny's 5 curler from another thread is a fantastic specimen. This guy cost me $2000 about 3 years ago, but it was a no frills / no power camping type hunt.

They taste pretty dang good, but they are small.
Typical weekend hunt trophy prices I've seen are $3k-$5k, some are fixed price some are by the inch or a hybrid price.

The correct way to measure the length of a BB is within the curls per SCI scoring…. not a straight line length measurement. This is often misleading to hunters when wanting to get a trophy BB. Outfitters and hunting ranches also mislead hunters by telling them what they classify what a "trophy" is.
It's very hard to get a BB to the age where he will have 27"-30" horns. If you look in the record books those are the upper 20% in the record books. It's a lot easier to raise many smaller ones and harvest those and make more money and tell the hunters you got a "trophy".
At the end of the day a trophy is in the eyes of the beholder anyway.

What you say on length and curls is spot on. Did you have him scored or measured? Looks really nice man. You should be proud of him. In my books a nice "trophy".

Both of those blackbucks pictured on this thread are great!

But dang, Gunny, that is an absolute unit! Maybe one of the prettiest I've seen. Wow!

No I didn't have him scored. Got him on the ranch of a great ag, class of '72. Straight line he measured 21", but I never measured the curled length. I fell in love with him at first sight because he was pitch black and had the right curls. It was January when I got him. That being said, yours, as I mentioned already, is incredible. And I love the full lay down mount. Even with his balls hanging out like he's forever saying "hey ladies"

I can see why you took him. Beautiful black. January and early February are the best times for the black color. If they are mature males they get blacker in the coldest months to absorb more sunlight for warmth.
My wife actually shot the one above on our place. He was the last animal she hunted on the ranch in Texas before we sold it. He had some age on him and it was in July so he had lightened up a bit.
I'll bet if you had yours scored you would be surprised how well he would score. If he's 21" straight and the curls… bet he's 25"plus.
I also like how you did his ears….. kinda like he was seeing another male and posturing
But I really like his deep black. Very cool!
