I feel like I'm getting nowhere online with this due to how many different opinions there are. Essentially, I'm going to build a SBR in .300 BO. I've settled on an 8" barrel length and can get 1:5, 1:6, and 1:7 twist rates.

It'll have an adjustable gas block and I'd like to be able to accurately shoot supers and subs without needing to be super picky with ammo. I'll end up suppressing it once I save up for a thunder chicken.

What twist rate would you select if you planned to use this mainly for home defense but will likely pick it up for hog, and maybe some deer, hunting?

I'm prepared to spend the money if it gets close to a jack of all trades result.

TIA

They will all work. I like a faster twist rate for subs, but supers, I do not see much difference.

I think the problem is that no single twist rate is that great for both supers and subs. You have to lean one way or the other or split it. Maybe 1:7 would be fair. Will be interested to see others thoughts.

Yes. The 1:5 is great for subs because it stabilizes the heavier grain ammo but doesn't shoot lighter grain supers well, supposedly.

I'm leaning towards 1:6 since the barrel maker lists it as an option. I'm not sure many do or else it might be more talked about?

I built a .300 BO in a bolt gun and used a custom Hart barrel. Main use is for quietly shooting hogs so it's always suppressed and shooting sub loads albeit with heavy grain bullets. So I went the fastest twist Hart offered then which was 1:6. I would have gone 1:5 if it would have been offered for my use.

How long of a barrel?
What distance are you generally shooting and what MOA?

I'm really curious about 1:6 for a shorter barrel and where the sweet spot is for projectile weight.

Just built my blackout for the same purpose! Faxon barrel with 1:8 twist, 9".
Still tinkering with getting the adjustable gas block to cycle subs with the suppressor on it. I have several types of subs coming to see if it's ammo first. Will probably keep it loaded and tuned for supers for home defense because of higher energy to target and assumed higher reliability from what I've seen so far.

I did a combo optic on it too - lpvo for variety of distance and red dot on top for eyes open CQB.

That's pretty! I'd be interested to hear what sub rounds you've tried, at what distances, and how you've felt about performance/accuracy.

The only sub round I've used so far was the hornady subsonic I think it was 192gr. With the gas block open it would still stovepipe rounds. The supersonic rounds 100% cycled right. I plan on shooting 100% suppressed, so I haven't fired subs without the can on it.

I've got freedom munitions hush 220 gr subs coming today, as well as some other supers.

I'm intending to run it suppressed as well so that type of feedback is super helpful. Appreciate it!

I'd be interested to hear if the heavier sub responds differently.

I'm going to go get my load data for you. Think I've got a target when testing for groups as well. Stand by my friend.

9 inch Barrel PWS. I typically shoot 110 Vmax or 115 Lehigh Controlled Chaos. I also rebarrelled a 16inch Remington Model 7 to 300blk.

Subs: Makers or Discreet balistics.

Hornady subX is **** for hunting. No expansion.

Doesn't matter on SBR BO. It's not a fast and light round like 5.56, much less finicky. Just buy PSA complete upper, it'll be MOH (hog), and then spend the money on suppression.

I called and talked to the mos tek guys today and they were super accommodating. It sounds like they've done a bunch testing with a wide variety of rounds and 1:6 and 1:5 had the fewest issues for 8" 300BO.

I'm going to be ordering a 1:6.
