A few years back PETA, HSUS, Friends of Animals and other anti hunting zealots got legislation introduced to ban having the above three animal species ( Addax, Scimitar's, Dama's) under high fences, raising them or hunting them in the U.S. The bill had a lot of support in both the house and senate.
Lots of work was done by the Exotic Wildlife Association, Second Ark Foundation, high fence landowners, and SCI to finally have the bill defeated.
You could not get those idiots to understand that that the raising, hunting, selling of those animals was insuring they would not go extinct.
Had the bill have past it probably would have spelled the end to those species in a few years.
Now there are programs where ranchers in Texas are sending those animals back to their native lands to help build the herds back.
But..

I like the way you put that. "Free range-ish"

They were essentially native cattle then and nothing like big game. Why would this be different now?

We didn't shoot them out because they were a challenge to hunt. We shot them out to starve the natives of their version of cattle.

There is something special about the American bison to me. It's the one "game" animal I won't hunt, eat, or wear.

They are amazing animals but why wouldn't you support the consumption and by products from the animals from the ranchers. I understand that it's a stretch with the term hunting though. They could never survive in the wild again unfortunately except in our Parks out west. The ranches that raise them for profit do a tremendous job keeping their numbers up and the meat is great!

It is just a personal preference. I like the thought of bison being able to roam and not being used as Livestock for food and clothing. I feel like there are enough other options. If you want to hunt/eat/wear them that is fine. I just choose not to.

Yep 2012. They announced this and that PETA kooky fruit nut went on 60 minutes or whatever program and literally said "I would rather them go extinct than have them hunted in Texas..."

If not for private herds in Texas they would not exist period. When she said that and they were due to go on the CITES list to protect them.....was to go in effect mid April 2012 I believe.

Well since they would not be allowed to be hunted....and they are too expensive to feed.....owners had a fire sale dumping them cheap cheap and over 100,000 scimitar hit the dirt between January and April. What was $10,000 plus animals were selling for $1000 to $2000 or so.

At least one of those lunatics was so far off the deep end that she openly admitted she would rather see the species go extinct than to thrive but also be hunted.

Those people are certifiably insane.

I wouldn't hunt them. I do like to eat them though.
And if given the chance, I think I could pull off wearing one.
Maybe a coat

Or some sort of headgear....

I was on a bear hunt up in Canada and one of our guides had a farm with buffalo that he raised for hunting. He was pretty open about the lack of sport involved as we drove his minivan into a field. After he honked, they came running (charging) up and we got out with the buckets of feed. He said that's how the hunts go, except he cuts the one you plan to shoot, into a neighboring pasture (range).

I love dogs women too. Doesn't mean I need to hunt/eat/wear wed them.
