As the title says, I'm trying to find some native wild plums growing somewhere either in the Conroe/montgomery area or in Bryan/College Station. I'm hoping to harvest a few from these trees to cultivate a few trees from the seeds. Let me know if you know where I can find some that are accessible (and I don't want to trespass!)

I'd really like to find some pawpaw as well, but I'm thinking they probably dont exist this far west?

Thanks in advance!!

The Brazos County Master Gardener Demonstration Garden on Hwy 21 has a large Mexican Plum. I gathered seeds in 2023 and had great germination. Too early for gathering seeds.

I don't know of any local stands of Chickasaw Plums but would like to get a stand started. Womacks Nursery in DeLeon used to sell trees listed in their wildlife plantings. However they are no longer shipping for Spring 2025. I used to see a stand of them along I45 north of Fairfield.

PawPaws will grow here but unheard of in the wild in central Texas.
I personally know a gent west of Houston near the Brazos River growing several of them in his backyard

Also FYI, there is a large American Persimmon at the entrance to Allen Academy on FM 1179.

If you don't have luck finding seeds near you, can order bare root plums from here:
https://westtexasnursery.com/

I planted a couple of bare root pawpaw trees this spring that I bought online as well. Will see if they survive, much less thrive. (Planted in Coleman County, so not their natural range as far as I can tell.)

Thanks for the info, I'll definitely go find that mex plum later in the summer when it's starting to ripen. I have 2-3 Chickasaw plum seedlings planted in pots left at my office in Bryan if you'd like one.

How do you go about germinating the seeds? I saw online something about cracking the seed so the interior kernel could more easily sprout and root out.

If you find a stand of Chickasaw plums, it is not difficult to locate the nearby suckers that shoot up and sever them underground about 5" on either side and root those. You will save a year or so over sprouting them from seed.

I'll try this…finding them growing anywhere is the real kicker now!

I have some seeds in my refrigerator from last year that I saved to plant but forgot about. I should be able to spare some. We have a few wild plums at our place in limestone county.

We live in north Brazos County and have dozens of wild plums/Mexican plums on our place at least that's what we've always called them since they smell like plums late in the summer. During the years when we have ample rain it looks like it snowed when the trees bloom. However, this year was different with a few blooms on a few trees. I'd be happy to share the seeds when they ripen and fall off later this summer.

Pawpaw trees are difficult to keep alive. I've tried multiple times (here in TN in their native range). They are a pain in the ass.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

Mine haven't leafed out, so I'm thinking they're not going to. I'll just put something else there this fall.

Yeah mine didn't either. I shouldn't have left them outside. It got too cold.

Sounds like pawpaw may not be any good unless I really baby it? My plan was to try and plant a few along the big creek on my property in Angelina County.

Plums didn't bloom very well this spring due to lack of rain.

However, the early/mid-summer rains made them bloom and they are now covered in plums.

Pic is from southeast Milam county. Almost all the trees look like this.

OP:
Did you ever find any plums? My dormant grove has plenty of suckers that are great for transplanting. Let me know if you need any.

I am not the OP, but wondering if you a willing to let another 2 or 3 wild native plum suckers get dug up?
I'd have to bring my helper to do the digging as I am in a powerchair, but I would love to try to get some wild plums back on this property I grew up on, near Iola.
