Howdy, had a new species run across one of our trail cams that I haven't seen on our property before. Looks like a mink but comparing it to a raccoon in a similar position it looks too big. Hope someone could help ID this for me. Located in Guadalupe County next to the Guadalupe river.

possibly an otter. I randomly see them around in Bastrop county close to the Colorado.

Sure looks like an otter to me. Their populations and ranges have really grown in Texas waterways over the last 10 years. Kinda cool to see IMO.

Had a couple in our pond in Bryan a few years ago.
Wife said I couldn't shoot them. I had to run outside when I would see them and yell and splash the water with my wooden paddle. They only stayed a few days. Most of my fish lived.

We had one show up in the ponds at our duck lease in north TX about midway through the 2023. It decimated the fish population in a couple weeks and moved on

Kill it as fast as you can if you want fish in your pond. They destroyed every pond on my place in 6months before I caught them.

I agree with all the guys on an otter.
We have quite a few here in our streams on our place in the Ozarks. Sometimes one will be in our lake below the house.
I did a study paper on them while in WFS at TAMU.
They are actually an indicator of a healthy ecosystem.
They have made no noticeable difference in our fish populations on our place….whether in our streams or our 4 acre lake…..and they have been native here a long time.
If anything they help me keep my populations in our lake where they need to be.

Probably going to leave him alone (for now). The part of the river we are on is dammed on both ends, and currently drained while they fix the 100 yr old dams. I'm more worried about getting rid of the increasing raccoon and dillo population. Every time I talk about needing to trap and dispatch them, the girls in the family say that it's mean and I should "relocate them". Need to get myself a 22 air gun so I can dispatch in city limits and not tell them what I'm doing.

I was born and raised and grew up on some land on the Guadalupe River by Spring Branch. The soils are good for the armadillos because of the amount of food…insects, worms, grubs etc. …and Raccoons live around rivers.
We never minded the dillos much as they were doing good unless they became destructive around the house.
For the coons we just found to not leave stuff around for them to eat on and they weren't around much after we removed the food sources.
If you live rural it's part of it.

There are several families of river otters on Clear Lake these days- we were at the bar on the water last year and watched a family of 5 just cruise across the lake in front of us. My buddy watches them get on his dock, they like playing around

We have a pair down in the small river/creek below our house. They have been there for about 4 years. Water is super clear and we watch them swim around.
Funny thing is we can see bluegills and smallmouths swimming also and neither seems to pay attention to the other.
Cool to watch their antics.

The OB is rife with related posts of how armadillos are digging up flower beds, and how red eared sliders are decimating stock tank fish populations, and how coyotes are wiping out deer. And that a bullet is the only viable solution.

Gunny your posts continue to offer a personal perspective that tell someone in a nice, inoffensive way that they are full of BS. And in most instances, they are.

You'll never get rid of the coons and any dent you put in the population will be temporary. They are like coyotes in that respect.

my parents have had otters on their small(ish) lake for years now and they are fun to watch. based on my independent studies with 6 beers and a pair of binos, they prefer crawfish to actual fish. maybe just easier to catch. they will probly wipe them out of a small stock tank.

as long as they hang around, they are also a good indicator that you dont have gators.

Anecdotal but saw a river otter where little sandy creek runs into Lake Conroe about a month ago. It surfaced right under me and startled me . It was startled too, saw me and was gone. It was full grown imo… 3 feet long is my best guess since I only saw it for about 2 seconds.

There are gators here but not many. Haven't seen one since last May's flooding .
