I was at one of my Daughter's friend's 3rd birthday party earlier this evening. They had a red ear slider in their backyard that they had just picked up off the road to keep as a pet a few days ago. Well one of the older brothers was playing with it and it bit and latched on to his hand. I don't know how long they were trying to get it off of him before I came out there but it was latched good when I got out there. It had bit his hand and then sucked back into its shell like turtles do I didn't know what to do but everybody was looking at me like I should know what to do. So, I grab my leatherman and stab it in its back leg and it immediately let go of the kids hand.

And that's how I traumatized some kids this evening.

That's quick thinking. I'd have been tugging on his arm trying to yank it free.

Thank you for not sticking your finger in its ass like the dog fighting video.

If you turn them upside down for a bit they usually let go as it completely screws their equilibrium up and they will put all their legs out and stretch their necks to instinctively try to flip over. Will usually relax their mouths then.
Learned this a long time ago the hard way growing up on the river.
Ask me how I know. .
I don't know if it works every time but thankfully it did for me. I was one scared little kid all by myself down on the river and shuttered at the thought of going all the way to the house with a turtle hanging on my finger.
ETA: He (or she) actually got me in the web between my fingers.

I had to read this about 10 times to figure out what was going on.

That makes sense, I just figured that distracting it from biting was going to be the best bet.

Yeah, I realized it was confusing after I posted it.

Here is the crazy part…. so my mom tells my grandpa about the turtle latching on to me. He immediately tells my mom that all I needed to do was turn him on his back and he'd let go.
Like it was some kind of Guadalupe River country lore I should have immediately known. .
I just happened to flip him on his back while having the kniption fit trying to get him off. I did not know it had scientific or anatomical merit.
We got the little guys all over up here in the Ozarks…. Especially lately. We are constantly stopping to move them across a road.
My wife and I have literally done 20 or so in the last few weeks. Funny thing is none have tried to latch onto us.
But I'm careful now not to tempt them in case the old "flip them on their back" theory don't work for hill billy turtles.!

You brought me an old memory back….and me remember it and laugh about it.

Damn I love TA!

A lot of the moms were screaming the whole time because the boy was screaming bloody murder. After the turtle unlatched and the boy had calmed down, he was over there watching it to make make sure that it wasn't bleeding out. Surprisingly, nobody was upset at me for stabbing it.
Considering this was in the Texas Panhandle, it probably doesn't happen too often. Everybody there said they didn't know that turtles could bite like that.

Lucky it wasn't a snapping turtle. Kid wouldn't have had a finger to worry about.

Bet the little shaver doesn't put his finger in front of a turtle's mouth any time soon.

Yep. Sometimes something only has to happen once to a youngster for them to learn "I ain't never doin that again"......like touching a hot stove, peeing on an electric fence, sticking your tongue on a metal pole outside when it's well below freezing.......... even after being told before hand not to by your pop....... and like someone already said "don't ask me how I know"

So think of it from the poor little turtles side.
You are a little creature in a big world crossing the highway doing your own turtle thing minding your own damn business.
A big jolly green giant picks you up and puts you in his yard so he can mess with you. You are again trying to do your turtle life again in this new world and a battalion of miniature jolly greens picks you up again and keeps sticking their appendages in your face until you have had enough and defend yourself by latching on to one of the jolly greens jacking with you.
Then a big jolly green stabs you in the leg….and you didn't want to be in the damn yard in the first place.
Yep…..sounds like a normal day for most of us living in this crazy world. But in our case that jolly green giant is our government and they too stab us in the leg everyday trying to make us let go!

is it bad that the red eared slider is the only type of turtle i know besides those big suckers at the lake that I call a logger head which is probably wrong? I've probably been calling every turtle I've seen the wrong name my entire life.

1983, back bay of Biloxi, MS. My brother and his crew of friends on bikes, me trying to keep up on my General Lee big wheel. We found a massive snapper that couldn't fit down a storm drain in the neighborhood. Someone went and got their radio flyer and we loaded it up on its back to haul it home. There was an old cajun guy that was a neighbor that knew just what to do with it. We were kings of the neighborhood for a day. Pretty much peak 1980s Gen X stuff.

Don't know who told me about the thunder but I remember 5yo me having nightmares about that turtle coming after me, any time there was a thunderstorm, for years after.

Worked a farm connected with the city wastewater plant for several years. Their ponds were full of red-eared turtles. I don't know if they were flushed, or their eggs were.

My older brother brought home a small snapping turtle one day (early 70's) and put out it on our back patio with our dachshund. Pretty quickly that turtle latched onto the dog's jowl and the dog commenced to squealing. Turtle would not turn loose. My dad ran into the house and brought out a couple of large lids to kitchen pots. He began banging the lids over the turtle's head and it let go of the dog immediately. My dad grew up in deep southeast Texas and said that turtles would turn loose if they hear thunder. Hadn't thought about that incident in over 50 years.
