Some information from my wife who is directly in contact with some Mystic staff and was once office staff:

She says that the map is relatively correct. Twins I, Twins II, and Bubble Inn are the highest elevation cabins along with Giggle Box and Wiggle Inn on the portion of the campground called the "Flats." They are next to the central office intentionally, and at the same elevations, such that those buildings are the last to need evacuation.

The elevation of the aforementioned cabins, the Office, and the Rec Hall are all 30-35 feet above the normal water level. There is no precedent, even in the '87 flood, for water to come up to the level of the Office/Bubble Inn/Twins. She found from a friend that the plan was likely to keep those campers in place while lower elevation cabins successfully evacuated to the Rec Hall (as evidenced by the photo of the older campers walking in the rain towards the Rec Hall). The waters then rose far beyond what was ever planned for and there was no more time to evacuate the three youngest cabins. Allegedly Dick drove his truck through the floodwaters to try and reach them once they realized it was cresting the hill they are situated on. Then the flood wave came. Even though they are limestone structures, someone told her an entire cabin, Twins or Bubble, may have been washed away with campers inside. For that to happen, the flood waters have to have been 35+ feet above normal. A truly unprecedented situation.

There is still no official word on Dick Eastland being alive. Everyone she is in contact with is tight-lipped. She hypothesizes they are waiting to find the missing girls before drawing attention to the loss of one of the camp directors.

It was Bug Hall that washed away. No one was in it at the time. Nut Hut roof collapse. It was also evacuated prior to roof collapse. Bubble Inn was in the process of being evacuated when the wall of water hit and everyone was washed away. The twins 1 and 2 cabins were left to fend for themselves from what I can gather and some made it out and some didn't. My daughter said some of the Twins kids were hanging in the trees when she came out of Wiggle Inn.

Wiggle Inn and Tumble Inn and possibly one other cabin (Hazel can't remember) rode out the surge in and on their cabins and all survived in those cabins.

None of this is gospel and most of it is coming from the traumatized mind of a 9 year old but this is the story I have so far.

My wife says this makes sense and would check out.

Wiggle, Giggle, and Tumble have vaulted ceilings with rafters. This allowed the girls to float/climb higher within the cabin. However, the Twins cabins and Bubble Inn have flat ceilings and attics. It's likely as the water rose, they couldn't get higher.

My wife does know Glenn and speaks highly of him but doesn't have his contact info.

Another heroic story to come out. Mystic had another woman on night shift (name unknown). She began to realize the situation around 2 am and sounded the alarm not only to Mystic but made calls to the surrounding camps. It's is likely she played a major role in securing the safety of the LaJunta campers and other nearby people. She sustained some injuries from what we understand but was able to make it safely to senior hill while helping with evacuations.

My understanding is 23 campers and 3 counselors were unaccounted for. There have been multiple found deceased.

I can't get through this thread without crying.

Derm, I have respected all of you involvement as a fan of the Ags and your input into all the forums on Texags. I wish I had the wisdom you have provided to us over the years. My heart truly goes out to you and your family and pray there is an outcome where there is joy.
I pray for all those missing and those who are in need.

As everyone says prayers. Please include the survivors in your prayers. They have gone through an experience that will be with them for the rest of their lives. Many will struggle with why not them? The 4th of July will never again be a celebration but a time of grief. These young ladies and their families need our prayers as well.

A source who also reported the other three lost girls and does not seem to have been reporting any major misinformation has indicated that it is camper "LB" who has been identified as the fourth victim. Again, not 100% sure, but that is that source.

I only read the last two pages, so please forgive me if I missed it.

I just heard the host on a car talk show out of Houston say that 27 girls from Camp Mystic are unaccounted for??? Please tell me that isn't true and he just mis-spoke.

This is approximately correct, and just the number unaccounted for from the camp. There are an unknown number of unaccounted for others.

Excellent point, I'll definitely include them too! Not just that the 4th of July will always be different but being around bodies of water, and particularly rivers, will never be the same either. Can't imagine.

Kerr County Sheriff's Office posted this on Facebook:

Quote:

There is a shelter for the general public who needs assistance at First United Methodist Church, 321 Thompson Drive in Kerrville. At present, don't need material or volunteer donations, as we are coordinating with a strong state response. Cash donations can be made to the Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country.
Link to that organization

Thank you for sharing - donated. Continue to pray for the safety and swift return of all those still unaccounted for.

The San Antonio Area Foundation has established a fund to assist where needed for the Hill Country folks most affected. They are excellent at finding and funding the most needed and best organizations needing money to carry out their missions. Please consider this if you are not sure where to send your assistance.

As a parent who picked up my Mystic child this evening after being evacuated by Blackhawk - I have no words. She just keeps saying I hugged so many of them last night before I went back up to senior hill.

I pray for miracles and the families who have lost so much. The Eastlands have raised my daughter for 9 years every summer- I could trust no family more than Tweety and Dick. Pray for the families waiting and the survivors. There is a lot to overcome for the entire Mystic family.

There was magic behind that green gate - just devastating!

I am devastated. My daughter is 17 and has been going to Mystic since she was 8. Dick & Tweety have also raised my daughter each summer. She absolutely adores Dick Eastland and has always said he is one of the strongest Christian influences in her life. I cant emphasize that kind of praise enough from my 17yo daughter. Mystic is my daughter's favorite time of year without debate. There is no close second place. It's indeed magical and I am absolutely heartbroken for the girls that are lost, the girls that have perished, the families of those girls, the Eastland family, the hundreds or thousands of girls like my daughter and the community at large. Mystic is a place of pure innocence and I felt so safe leaving my daughter there each summer. This is crushing.

The stories are gut-wrenching. Its hard for me to think that there isn't anyone who hasn't shed some tears in the late 24 hrs.
We had a noon prayer vigil at our church for the one known deceased and his missing wife and two young sons that are members of our church and community. There just were not enough boxes of Kleenex tissues. It will continue in 30 minute shifts until something is known about the rest of the family. Will continue to pray for those still missing. Derm, I said a couple of prayers for your great niece during the service and will continue to pray for her.

Thank you.

As time goes by, we are finding more people that we know and love that have been impacted by this tragedy. This is a sad and solemn time for Texas. We have been praying and crying through the weekend. As fireworks exploded outside last night, we were praying for all who are involved, and for there to be survivors found. Just no other word but heartbreaking.
Thanks everyone for the updates and for staying on topic.

Derm and all others you have my sincerest thoughts and prayers. I can't imagine the feelings on all sides of this tragedy.

Looks like the flood waters around the camp have receded enough that the press has gone in... not sure if landmarks can be identified based on the photos (eg what cabins these are) (Edited with labels based on responses)

(Dining Hall)

(Dining Hall)

"Nut Hut" cabin (children reportedly evac'd before flooding)

"Nut Hut" cabin (children reportedly evac'd before flooding)

"Wiggle Inn" cabin (children survived in cabin during flood per Badace52's child's first hand account)

"Look In" cabin (see mud line above windows)

I also updated the map I found with other labels I figured out:

Plus a photo I came across of what also looks like Wiggle Inn on a better day:

Adding connectivity to responders in/around the river basin makes a lot of sense.

Kerr County probably doesn't have that many vehicles involved, but I do appreciate increasing the reach of communications as fast as possible.

My daughter just looked and top two are the dining hall, second two are Nut Hut she thinks - for sure the exterior one is and she thinks inside, too because bathroom appears to be to the left. Last cabin pic she thinks is Wiggle

She was there as a counselor first term, her 13th Mystic summer. All three of my boys were at LaJunta first term as well, and my 17 year old was due to go back this week to work the remainder of second term. Lots of emotions.
