Most likely you are seeing scammers out of India or Pakistan, claiming to be someone who's identity they stole off Facebook
Those grifters will emerge, but that isn't what I have seen so far.

So far what I am seeing is this grift from actual locals.

My wife was a teacher for a high school student who drowned in a flood in our hometown. She granted an interview with a reporter to describe what a kind, sweet person the student was. However, she was misquoted (reporter actually made up some of her statements), which caused some very hurtful feelings for the parents.
I was interviewed for a news story about 14 years ago. I asked the reporter to send me a rough draft before publication so I could review and make sure he got everything right. He said he would, but he didn't. And he misquoted me. Never again.

A lot of times it's out of the reporter's hands, an editor is making that call (also the headline is very frequently out of the reporter's hands as well).

I grew up down the road from the Knetsch family. G used to give me a ride to school. We farmed their land. I am praying for their safety.

The rescue swimmers and the like don't quite get enough credit here, and they should be called out where they put their lives in danger and for their tremendous skill.
