I can't seem to find any official information, but does anyone know the risk of Lake LBJ flooding? My niece is staying in Horseshoe Bay and her parents are out of town. Need to know if I should come get her.

Just checked my cams and all is well. Word is they lowered 12" to be prepared to absorb any over flow from Buchanan… but that lake is extremely low.. so should be find

Lake LBJ
Floodgate Operations and Forecasts
Last Update: Jul 4 2025 7:17PM
Inflows: Inflows to Lake LBJ from the Llano River are currently elevated from storms overnight and today.
Gate Operations: One floodgate is open at Wirz Dam to release storm runoff flowing into Lake LBJ from the Llano River. Flows will be fast and water levels will be higher than usual downstream of the dam.
Lake level forecast: While floodwater is passed through the lake, the lake level may vary from the normal operating range.

Buchanan is not the issue for LBJ flooding. It's the floodwaters from the Llano river that has a straight shot into the lake

Horrible. Prayers for all especially the children and their families.

Just received this from a very close friend.

Dermdoc. Even though we are way up here in the Ozarks,
I have notified our Bible Study group of about 28 guys of Mary Grace and prayers needed. All 28 have responded and praying as I write this.
We also have a live prayer list at our church. About 20 have responded there on Mary Grace's behalf.
Prayer works!!
Peace.

The biggest mistaken translations today have been.

"Accounted for" is not equivalent to "safe"
"Evacuating" is not "rescued"

It would be if Buchanan can't hold all the water coming down the San Saba and Colorado. Buchanan would then dump into Inks ( which is full, constant level) then into Colorado arm of LBJ.

I was at Black Rock Park on Buchanon back at the end of May. It was something like 20' under full pool then. I'm trying to fathom the amount of water it would take to get there and it just boggles my mind.

Video of Camp Heart of the Hills, just downstream the South Fork of Camp Mystic. The old resort side of the camp the flood went up the the 3rd floor, most other buildings destroyed completely. The owner/director Jane Ragsdale died in the flood. Camp was between sessions so no campers were present. No other casualties there.

I'm at canyon at my wife's grandparents' place right now. Normally there's 15'-20' of water in the cove their place abuts, and that's about 25'-30' below their house. Back in '02 (IIRC), the water was in their backyard and just a few feet from their house. It's unimaginable to me how much water was here back then since the water is over half a mile away now.

LCRA posted they are going to open up more gates on LBJ / Marble Falls.

Be prepared down stream.

Summary
Last Update: Jul 4 2025 7:24PM

LCRA has opened a floodgate at Wirtz Dam and plans to open additional floodgates at both Wirtz and Starcke dams soon to release storm runoff flowing into Lake LBJ from the Llano River. Throughout the course of the evening, LCRA may need to open all 10 floodgates at Starcke Dam to move floodwaters downstream. The releases will flow from Wirtz Dam, which creates Lake LBJ, through Starcke Dam, which creates Lake Marble Falls, and into Lake Travis. Flows downstream of Wirtz and Starcke dams will be very fast and water levels will be much higher than usual. Please take action to protect people and property that may be affected.
The floodgate operations are a response to heavy rains that fell late Thursday/early Friday over much of the Hill Country, causing a rise on many streams and tributaries. Please note that rain chances continue overnight, and conditions can change rapidly.

See the http://www.hydromet.lcra.org for the latest real-time data on rainfall, streamflow and lake levels.
When flash flooding occurs, avoid unnecessary travel. If you must travel, don't drive into flooded roadways. Remember "Turn around, don't drown."

Unscheduled releases from the Highland Lakes dams may occur suddenly and unexpectedly at any time due to emergency hydroelectric generation or other reasons. The public should exercise caution and avoid being in the water near the dams at all times.

True, but it generally does mean that they know the whereabouts of the person or body. I don't think that's the case here.

I pray they find all of these folks safe. This is such a tragedy.
