There are times that it just makes my heart whole again when people remember our son (we lost him 11 years ago)... while some people are hesitant to do it, thinking it will hurt, I can speak for myself that years down the road, it helps more to know he's not forgotten than the hurt it causes the heart.

For those that know people that lost someone, one thing you can do right now is set a calendar reminder for some point in the future to check in on them and tell them you love them. Maybe in August give them a call or text. In September, write them a quick note. In July next year as we approach the 1y mark, write them a letter or give them a call.

Right now, they are likely extremely overwhelmed with everything. But the people around them and checking in on them will dissipate as time goes on. That's when it is time to check in again, because there can be such a big crash as the rest of the world starts to go on with their lives, and they still feel the emptiness of loss.

We are coming up on 5 years since my father died, and it was my Aggie family that stepped up (especially Trouble) more than even my own family or my church. The support I received from other Ags really affected me in ways I still can't adequately express my gratitude for.

And remember that every year when the rest of the country is celebrating the 4th with cookouts and fireworks, their grief will be raw all over. Try to think of a way to support them. This is incredible advice... as someone who's been through a traumatic experience before (with my own health, not someone else's, thankfully)... it's the check ups down the road that make the most impact. Not at all trying to make this about me... Just from someone who's been through some trauma

Man, I can't believe it's been 11 years already. Hope yall are doing well.

The grief ball really explains it well. Somedays that button just gets hit out of nowhere and it crushes.

I'm so incredibly saddened by this that words just don't seem adequate. I will continue to pray for you and your family Derm, and all of those who have lost loved ones.

27 lost from one camp is just unfathomable and unfair. I worked several years at a church camp here in OK of which I am a board member 27 years later.

I do not know how I would go on if I was one of those surviving counselors. Or a parent. It is overwhelming to even imagine.

As we look back on it from 10k feet and after a few days of minute by minute coverage, I am unable to grasp the scope of this tragedy.

Derm - I hung on every post over these 67 pages. I wish I knew what to say to make it go away.
