I swear at least 1 or 2 posters here own or run machine shops - is that still true?

I have some parts I need made and am having a hard time finding anybody that will do the work. Granted, they are kind of odd parts but not outlandishly so - mostly it would require either a broach or some other process to create a hexagonal bore in a solid bar of 300 series stainless.

Or does anybody have a machine shop in or around Houston that they might recommend?

Faith Mfg in Humble are great people. They may be too big to do a one-off, but I don't know that.

That's a helluva company name.

Good shop but they are going to be super expensive for something like this. OP probably needs more of a mom and pop type shop. B&R Productions up in New Waverly is a good option.

I've already talked with Shane, he was my first call. But I also always get 3-4 quotes.

Facility is in NE Houston, but that doesn't mean I have to have somebody close to here.

How long is your bar?

Longest is 3.25", 1.00" OD with a hexagonal bore that is .687" across the flats. Also has a .125" bore at one end for a set pin. 300 series stainless.

Other part is exactly the same, but only 2.00" long and doesn't have the .125" through bore.

I need 50 of each.

Could EDM the bore for less than trying to broach it, if permissible.

Went to the Yamaha outboard plant. I had never heard of EDM machining. They used it in some applications to make some undercuts that were not possible with conventional tooling. It was pretty damn cool.

The hex detail is a perfect application for a die sinker EDM. The parts would still need to be cut to length, drilled and counterbored prior to that process. And, die sinker and wire EDM technology is very cool! Slow, but highly effective with close tolerances and finish requirements.

Not many good EDM shops in Houston unfortunately, at least capable of plunge. We have one that is used for all our work and they are a nightmare.

Minco and United Machine are both good options that I have direct experience with. Sun Manufacturing on the west side is also great.

Knust-Godwin SBO is a great option on the west side in Katy. They have a strong EDM department that compliments their shop. But, they will definitely not be the most affordable option.

Wire, not sinker, imo for these parts.

Wire EDM with fast hole for the win.

Need help with a machine shop in Katy/ Houston.

The responsiveness with some of these shops is frustrating.

I'm still waiting to hear back from Knust-Godwin.

My parts are too large for Faith and Sun Manufacturing.

Who machines large parts and will return a phone call / email?

It's just two pieces of A36 plate 3'-9" x 6'-10" x 2" thk. Need them milled from 2" to 1/4" on a taper length-wise.

Easy peasy.

I haven't had any dealings with them in probably 10 years, but for really large parts, we used to use these guys. https://marberrymachine.com/

That's who I've used in he past. For thelast couple years they were only doing gov.mil work, but have seemingly started taking orders again. I just spoke to them and will hopefully have a quote back today. Thanks

Green Machine in South Houston was always responsive and can easily do that work for you.

Thanks, I've finally gotten a couple of my regular shops to respond so I'll see where they end-up and go from there.

I think Sun can do that for you, I know there large HBM is pretty busy right now. Might be worth calling if you haven't already. Ask for Kristin.

Sun told me this morning the parts are too large for them. And these are something we need milled ASAP.

Machine Works in Bryan has larger equipment. Not sure if anyone is going to want to mess with that job in a timely manner due to the size, work holding, and possible warp.
