Friend and his wife rent a house around Hamilton every year for a few weeks. I had a ton of cc points so I flew up for a couple days. Flew out of hobby at 5:35 yesterday (ouch) into Spokane and drove down.
Connected in Denver, so had a front row seat to the Rockies from the air

Nice. Looks like it's 44 there this morning. We're looking forward to going back to the mountains soon- the trees were starting to change colors a few weeks ago. Not sure why I came back to Houston…

Landed in Spokane, and got my rental. Route took the house took me right by Coeur d'Alene, which was incredibly beautiful. I also stopped at a couple scenic spots along the way and soaked in the beauty… Idaho's panhandle is particularly breathtaking.

I made it to the house, took a nap, and we went on a short hike before dinner and drinks at fin's. I had a couple ciders and we ordered a ton of apps to share.

Got back to the house and had a couple beers before bed. No ac on, slept with the windows open and a door cracked in my bedroom. Laying in bed waiting for everyone to get up. I may never come home

Idaho, in my opinion, is the most underrated state in the country.

Coeur d Alene, Salmon, Sawtooth, Frank Church, Boise, Driggs, Island Park, Snake River are all spectacular.

For some reason my phone won't let me upload pics. Started this morning with a little hike at a local park. Went to higher ground brewing for lunch, great drinks and pizza. I'm a big fan of these ciders. Had a tart cherry cider at lunch and it was 10/10.

After lunch my buddy and I did the bear creek overlook hike, the views were nothing short of spectacular. About 5 miles round trip, ~1200' elevation gain.

3 weeks ago you wouldn't have been able to see a damn thing. Smoke was horrible down there for 2+ weeks.

You can take the boy outta Texas, but you can't take Texas outta the boy.

Those folks won't put up with a Texan forever. Sooner or later they'll boot you out.

Don't you work remote? Could have a house, waitress wife, three kids, and snowblower 36 months from now.

Seriously considering moving here. This trip has been incredible. Life seems to move slower here, there's seemingly less keeping up with the joneses…. More like what you'd imagine America should be

I couldn't blame you for it. I have a good friend that grew up in Montana. She got put as fast as she could for a lot of reasons, but also wanted the city life. The winters are a thing though.

Life is short. Do what you makes you happy. But also continue to provide entertainment value on the OB.

My cousin did it and doesn't regret it one bit. Grew up in SETX, worked in the Houston the area during his 20s-30s, moved to Spokane about 7 years ago.

Between him, my SIL in Bend, and my good friend in the Flathead Valley, my wishlist is growing.

Young and single, why the hell not? If I could talk my wife into moving up that way, that's where I would be. Texas sucks donkey balls

How do you feel about winter?

I believe the winters here are milder than a lot of the state, with snow from nov-march.

They call it the banana belt

Do some comparison pricing on the cost of groceries, homes, and local job market / pay first.

Once the novelty of snow wears off, it gets annoying pretty quick.

That pizza looks pretty good, and the sour cherry cider is intriguing. What a great trip; the scenery is fantastic.

When the weather is nice there is no where nicer, but you are going to have two months of wildfire smoke that blanket the Bitterroot Valley, at least 4 months of winter followed by the month of mud that makes you homesick after a while.

Not to mention housing is a nightmare, the trailer parks are full of Californians who can't afford homes, the native Montanans definitely can't afford anything are pissed about development and people moving in. A visit is great but living there isn't as wonderful as it seems at first glance.

There will be a 38 yr old native Montanan available here in Austin in probably the next month. She's got my two kids and doesn't like short guys though so you might be SOL…She makes a hell if a Montana tour guide though!

I love Montana! It's an absolutely beautiful place and the locals in Dillon treated my brother like old friends when we were there back in 2020. I killed my first Shiras bull moose in the Sage Creek drainage in Oct. 2020, and have enough bonus points to draw a speed goat tag around Dillon. I'd move there in a heartbeat, but my buddy that lives in Dillon always says, "30 below keeps the riff riff out"! Truer words have never been spoken!!!

Real estate in Montana is higher than a cat's back but I'd sure like to have a place up there to call my home!

Have fun up there, Tandy, and take plenty of pics to share with the rest of us...
