Have a tall lean to on side of barn with chairs and stuff setup. In the last months about 30 sparrows have moved in to roost in the evenings in the purlins but tend to hang their ass out and crap on our stuff. Anyone have any ideas on how to get them out and keep them out? Thinking may end up having to get a cherry picker and put net up but trying to avoid that for now if possible.

Plastic owls & rubber snakes work if you move them around about once a week.

I have almost the exact lean to on my shop. I had sparrows and pidgeons. They don't like peperment smell.
I sprayed the nest with peppermint room freshener/oil but also hung some plastic owls and snakes. Moved the owls and snakes around every month or so.
I don't have a single bird under there now.

String up bird netting across it and tack it to each rafter. Its honestly your best solution and it should prevent any of those little garbage species from roosting in there (looking at you martins, you little ****s).

I need to run electric out here and put up boxes for ceiling fans out here this winter, will have to rent a cherry picker at that time. I will likely put up net then, hopefully all the other mentioned things will be a good stop gap in the meantime.

Old school folks said to paint the underside sky blue & they would stay away. Not sure how much that actually works.

I tried that under boat slip roof for spiders. Didn't work.

Worked on wasps at the ranchito.

Painting the ceiling or bottom of the roof sky blue deters swallows as they won't build their nest without it being under cover and the blue paint makes them think it's the sky …… what I've been told. We did it at my dads house and it worked pretty good.

I've got an area where I cannot have birds for food safety reasons and then my shop where I just refuse to have bird poop on my forklift. Lots of ideas have been shared in above posts for OP to try. I came across a product called Avitrol. It comes on grain that you can place around your building. It is manufactured for "deterring" birds. It is effective. Period.

Avitrol is a neurotoxin that is fed as grain to birds that causes them to have seizures, convulsions and pain which causes them to squawk, thinking it drives the others away from fear. However, in some species, the distress call usually brings more. It leads to death. Bottom line it's a poison that kills them. It's a controlled pesticide.
It is fed as grain so it actually attracts birds to kill them. It is non species specific. Birds often fly away and can die and be consumed by other wildlife and predator birds.
There are a lot better ways to deter birds than using products like this.
Our song bird populations are declining rapidly and without birds to control insect populations we are going to have much worse problems in the future.
There is oftentimes a need to deter nuisance animals and birds but we can do it without eradicating the wildlife. ( Unless it's hogs or rats)

I hear you. I did not expand on the chemical because I figured that people who require it would do the checking. You are correct on many of your points. I think responsible use and common sense will guide you. I have had very good luck removing target species. I have seen zero evidence of it attracting other birds.

Edit: Make no mistake. It is not a deterrent nor meant as a deterrent.

Yes sir. I knew nothing about the product till a game biologist told me about it a few years back. Allegedly some dudes were using it at a very large marina. They allegedly put it on the roofs of the marina and folks started finding dead birds all around and then a dead bald eagle showed up with that chemical in it.
(It was suspected it had dined on some of the dead birds.)
It was also found that it washed off the roofs and went into the lake water….which created a whole other issue.
Being that it was on the grain, it was suspected to have attracted other birds in the area, which putting seeds or grain out tends to do.

Probably a bad move on the part of the marina. I'm not saying they shouldn't use it, just responsible in how. Meaning placement, volume, and cleaning up target birds.

I have a hard time relating to the biologist although what he said is what I would expect him to say. The product is labeled as pet friendly and not supposed to translocate like Temik would. Thats also why Temik is no longer labeled. It is very difficult to obtain a label and the EPA would pull it immediately if data showed it moved between species. With the minute use rates the reality of anything significant making it into the water is a stretch.

Their web site states it is toxic to all vertebrates. It also states that it can transfer to other species that may ingest the dead birds if they have undigested grain in their bodies like their craw.
It also says it is not specie specific so it's not target specific. So, as an example, if you target pidgeons you are gonna kill doves as well.
They also highly recommend people coming to them to take courses to get certification to use it….above the standard applicators license.
Many municipalities and cities have banned its use….both in the U.S. and other countries
The biologist that gave me the info was a fellow Aggie grad in WFS, as I.
The most efficient way to get rid of nuisance wildlife is to follow basic steps:
1.) Remove the food source they feed on.
2.) Prevent them from entering where you don't want them.
3.) Don't give them conducive habitat to live in.
Unless you totally eradicate a species, others will always move in to take their place.
There is certainly circumstances that evasive species need controlling. Oftentimes by professionals using a product like above. But for the average homeowner, rancher, farmer, not so much. Much better ways to attack the problem.

The best way is to use materials that they can't make nests in. Rectangular tubing instead of C-purlin to start with would have saved you lots of headache. I know this because i did the same thing as you on a lean-to on my barn. When I saved up more money for the west side of my barn for a lean-to I didn't use purlin and used rectangular tubing, that side has no nests and the side with C-purlin is full of nests.

This pesticide seems non-selective and I don't know how you would have a pesticide to target a single species. We had campground hosts at local state park a few years ago working and euthanizing cowbirds caught in the trap, which is legal at certain times of the year. There is another bird, Canyon Towhee, that looks a lot like a female cowbird so they were killing them also. Dumb! Lots of sparrows, that are protected, move south in winter and most superficially resemble each other. Point is, if targeting House Sparrows, which are not protected and make their filthy nests everywhere, get a good BB gun. Anyone trying to raise Purple Martins in Martin houses will be happy.

This is still the best solution I've read yet.
