First blood. Passed on a really nice 8 and was kicking myself. Then ole Mr piggy wiggly strolled in right at dusk. Had him on camera every night leading up, but never during daylight. Big mistake on his part.

Drilled him in the shoulder then chambered another and hit him again on the run. Should have just let him run so I didn't have to drag his stinky ass so far.

Refugio county.

Spent the weekend seeing some good rutting action in Burleson County. With the wind and rain, we hunted a bow stand down in a creek bottom. Ive already gotten a buck in Burleson so I played guide for some good friends. This deer had been on camera a few times but always skirting the edge and avoiding the feeder. Over the weekend we saw him and a few other nice bucks but kept having trouble with not being able to get a shot due to them chasing does through the thick stuff or sneaking past the far side of the feeder.

Yesterday morning, we went back out with a different plan. The super 90 crammed full of buckshot. Morning started off slow with nothing but a fawn at the feeder and a doe sneaking up behind us blowing like crazy. About 730 he pops his head out of the brush to the left at about 25 yards. I nudge my buddy and he sees him and starts to raise the gun. The wind had died down and my buddies duck parka sounded like someone rustling a bag of ruffles potato chips. The deer freaks out and runs forward five yards and stops behind an oak. Then back to where he came from but again behind brush. I was sure he was gone but like a squirrel shifting direction on the blacktop he made the fatal mistake of turning again and coming right back across in front of us at a trot. A single shot and Bang FLOP! The Winchester 3" #1 buck shows no mercy at that distance. The plan worked perfectly.

This weekend I guided for a disadvantaged youth hunt near Jacksboro. About 25 kids, all first time hunters. My little guy was 11 years old and was missing 3 fingers and a large portion of one hand. He could shoot pretty good at the range. He closed the deal on a 7pt this morning with a 162 yard shot, not on par with his range performance. It was a dead center stomach shot. Luckily it stopped in the open about 75 yards from us. He was too amped up to take a 2nd shot and finish it so instead of waiting for the kid to calm down, I popped the deer in the neck to ease his suffering. These kids laid some smack down this weekend for sure. Lots of smiling faces.

It was my 2nd year doing it. They need guides every year. Lots of the guides are in 60's some pushing 70. We need some more young blood in there to mentor these kids.

Next year when the guy starts asking for guides I'll make a thread on the OB. They usually do the boys weekend around 12/6. They have a girls weekend in November where they can only use women guides and they really struggle to find women guides to volunteer. I think this year they only had 4

About 15-20 years ago I did the Operation Orphans hunt down In Mason a few times with the boys and girls... I helped guide... It was the most rewarding, fun, happy, sad, ... any and all of the emotions one can have to watch and help these kids that have either no parents or parents who are only part time parents, go out for the weekend, have no cares in the world and have great time in the outdoors.. It was one of the best things i have ever done and experienced...

The girls hunts were actually more exciting than boys sometimes.. those girls weren't afraid to shoot a deer and then get in there and gut and help cut them up... It was great... the first girl i took out shot a really nice 8 point.. one that most folks dont get a chance at ever... I took it home and brought it back to her at the children's home in Comanche and surprised her with nice euro mount... she cried.. and i might have cried a little too... lol..

If anyone get a chance to do thing like this .. DO IT

My best friend/lease co-op buddy and I have been watching this guy since about March of this year - we nicknamed him Ocho. He was my buddy's #1 target buck until a freaking badass 8 with forked G2's walked out in front of him a couple of weeks ago and he did the right thing and put that buck down. So I've been chasing this one since then.

Last 4 hunts I had seen exactly nothing. Not even a squirrel. No coons, no pigs, no scrub deer - nada except a few cardinals and tweetie birds. Was almost resigned that this would be another season without a good buck off my lease, which is just part of the game. But I had a work meeting not far from the place yesterday that finished up early enough for me to swing by the lease for a random weekday evening hunt.

Not long after I got to the stand I saw two spikes walk out, which is more than I've seen in a while, so felt like things were promising. Then I had to get out and run the f'n cows away, which I honestly figured ended the hunt. About 30 minutes later I noticed some movement about 250 yards out and watched a young doe come out from the treeline and down the ROW towards the feed pen. Not 20 seconds later I saw more movement and may have sharted myself a bit when Ocho turned the corner and followed that little doe towards me. Felt like forever before he decided to come around in front of the pen and give me a perfect broadside at 130 yards on the nose. 6.5 Grendel put him down, he never moved after that.

8 years to the day and damn near 8 years to the hour that my dad passed away. You won't convince me that my old man didn't push this old guy out for me yesterday. Great main frame 8, and well above average for the part of the state I hunt. Texted my buddy and his brother and they came flying in from town to the lease. Lots of laughs and victory shots. I'll see him again in ~9 months after the taxidermist gets done.

My 9 year old got it done tonight on some family land. We spent a couple hours watching hawks fly and scanning the hills with our binoculars. Then we had a basket 6, a doe, and a spring fawn grazing some wheat cover around 3pm. A flock of 12 turkey flew out from some miscanthus grass and spooked them away a few minutes later. Then we spent the next 90 minutes watching 10 deer out in corn stalks on the neighbor's farm. He may have expressed boredom a few times in there. Finally as legal shooting time was ticking down, this guy decided to sneak in to browse on the soybeans. Slow walking and stopping broadside the whole time at 100 yards. He aimed and kept with the buck as it walked behind cover and back into the open. At each pause I asked again..."you on that perfect kill spot". "Yes Dad". Finally, I gave the go ahead while watching through my binoculars. He connected. We gave it a couple minutes as I knew it was dead on shot but sunlight was fading fast. He found the blood on the snow and we worked together by one stopping while the other walked ahead to the next good spot. After 70 yards we found him piled up in 5ft tall switchgrass. Needless to say, it was a great evening. Self built 350 Legend and a 3-9x40 Leupold and a focused 9 year old got the job done on a cold December day!

My first Kansas buck, on November 7th. 30 yds bow shot quartering away from a tree stand. It was a beautiful morning, the rut was crazy and everything was moving at sunrise. 3 does came in and left, and 20 minutes later this buck came in looking for them. I had a hell of a time dragging him out of the bean field and vowed to do some cardio before next hunt because it almost killed me.

I dropped off the quarters, backstrap, and neck meat at the processor and it weighed 91 lbs!

Yesterday. Super windy and cold. Top drove all over a great ranch in south Texas. The amount of deer and Nilgai we saw was amazing considering the wind. A lot of meat/sausage/ tamales/ jerky in our future

What do you boys want for breakfast BBQ ?.....OK Chili.

I buy tamales from an old lady who sells them out of her car trunk.
I took her a few Lbs of Nilgai and she made me 100 tamales. They're so good.

Waited until late in the season to pull the trigger namely due to cooler weather finally arriving in South Texas. Buck was taken Dec. 30, does Jan. 11.
